When I was younger I use to love drawing. But, one day a very good friend of mine at the time who was good at art had laughed at my sketch book when I was in about 5th grade. Ever since then I've not found the motivation to draw. I believe you're right in your assumption.

Yes, it's a shame when just one sentence said by someone back in our past has such an influence on how we feel about something for the rest of our lives! I hope you find the confidence to pick up some art materials again. I have another video planned that basically gives you some motivation, tips and steps towards taking up art again for many people such as yourself. Stay tuned. At last, someone who actually agrees that art is a talent. I've been trying/fighting with art on Procreate for a long long time, as well as other software. I have to disagree that online tutorials do not help at all, you need good old quality tuition in a classroom (if you have the talent that is). I personally don't have the talent and have given up and deleted all creative apps from my ipad, I'm done.

I do believe that some people are talented, and talent influences the rate in which someone can improve IF they put the time, effort and dedicated practice. My siblings are talented in drawing and make good art ever since they were young. And being the one who doesn't have the talent for it, I was jealous and wanted to be able to do the same, but my drawings were just really bad and my sister often made fun of me for how I often tried to copy others artwork and failed because it looks so bad. I was just thankful that I didn't get discouraged because I was kinda dumb to understand any form of insult aside from ones personally directed at me and not what I make. Fast forward to the present, I can confidently say that (although it's not god-tier or anything) my art is better than anything my siblings could make now because I spent years trying to improve. While they had the talent for it, they never bothered practicing or getting better so they were stuck with whatever they could make in the past. But since they are talented, I believe if they had also put the effort then they could have also achieved what I am able to make in way less than half the time it took me to reach my level.

Thank you for your comment. Sadly, you're right and there is no better way to get good results than to put the effort in. Fine art is similar to music in that way - some are just better than others, but it still takes learning, dedication and practice. While success is luck with a bit of marketing strategy thrown in!

I have Asperger Syndrome, in case you've heard of that diagnosis. I have been learning to draw for 6 years and stopped a few months ago, but started again after I became interested again. But sometimes I wonder if anyone like me will ever be able to become a master artist even if it takes longer for me to achieve my goal. But no matter what, I am still determined to keep on trying, even sometimes when I feel hasty. Thank you for this video.
@tommullinerart2 жыл бұрын
Asperger's shouldn't be much of an obstacle in your learning progress if you are determined enough. Drawing is simply making mark on a surface. Drawing well is putting particular marks in particular places on the surface. I'm going to be making a step by step drawing and painting course soon that teaches you everything you'll need to know in order to paint and draw amazing artwork by yourself. In the meanwhile, keep learning and enjoy it. Remember that you're learning to draw for YOU, not for anyone else.

I personally believe it is a talent. All the people who say "I worked hard and practiced to get to where I was! Anyone can be a good artist" To that I say "Yes, I'm sure you practiced and worked hard, but you likely had the talent inside you all along, which allowed you to get better at it." I drew allot as a kid, and it was GARBAGE but I didn't care. It wasn't until I started using the internet at 13 and saw other people's drawing. I tried to do what they did, failed miserably and never touched a pencil again for 11 years. My best friend is an incredible artist, can do it with his eyes closed. He keeps telling me to practice, but I have made it clear I have, I've read books, watched tutorials, drew for hours and hours and hours and have gotten nowhere. My dream is to make my own adult oriented shows like BoJack Horseman but I'm not closer to that dream than I was 12 years ago. I truly do believe talent IS A MUST to be a real artist. I consider myself to be an incredibly creative person, I love to design characters but I cannot draw to save my worthless life. Being an artist is 50% hard work and practice and 50% talent. Both are needed if you are to get anywhere.
@tommullinerart2 жыл бұрын
Some will always be better than others at picking things up and mastering them, but it doesn't mean others can't - it just takes more effort. Being 'good' at art is simply putting the right marks in the right place. If you can hold a pencil and make marks on paper, why can't you draw a picture? So many people expect to be able to draw well after a short period of time, and that's not realistic. You can't speak a language after only a few lessons, but you can say a few things - same with art. There's such a vast amount to learn, many jump to the end and are unsurprisingly, disappointed in their results.

Totally agree with you Brett. I see drawing (art) as another form of intelligence, like math etc. Not everybody can be a physicist, if you lack intelligence in that region, you can learn what you want, it wont stick with you. Same with drawing, draw practice what you want, if you lack in that intelligence area (talent) it wont stick. Art and drawing talent has variations like with math, physics etc, some people score high in it, some lower but just have enough to understand it and make progress. Some are very low in it and it wont stick and don't make progress or the progress is that slow, it is hardly noticeable.

To be honest it's not so much about how long you've been doing something, its about how long you've been doing it the right way and you work on something with your conscious mind. If we write we do it without thinking about it because it comes second nature by now and doing something on auto-pilot means you wont ever improve on it. Basically, practice doesnt make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

It's NEVER really too late. You may have heard that in order to master anything, you need to have spent 10,000 hours do it. I don't agree with the notion that you are born with it, everything is learnt in my opinion. To further this point, talent is debateable as anyone who is labelled as talented has had years of practice before getting to where they are now. I find people who think along the lines 'oh I could never do that' as people who aren't willing to give things a go. Just the same way a musician learns an instrument, same for an artist whose instrument is a brush instead. I paused the video at around 2 minutes to write this comment, now I am at 3 minutes and you are saying the exact same thing, hilarious!

@tommullinerart3 жыл бұрын
Nooo - not so! It IS a thing you can learn to do - it just takes persistence and learning the right way. Just like learning anything - you need to start simple and build on your skill from there - one step at a time. Let me give you example. If you're in a play and have to learn your lines. What's the best way to learn them? NOBODY learns them ALL in one go and expects to know them perfectly from one session. Of course not - you learn them one line at a time, you don't progress until you've learnt the lines up to that point. Building your art skills is the same thing. Start by learning to draw with just lines - no shading, learn to see properly, starting with simple shapes then gradually add complexity and details. Once mastered, move up to shading, then colour. There's also a progression of medium used too - graphite to charcoal to pastel to acrylic paint to oil paint. Just like learning the guitar, it's not easy, nor is it quick. But it IS possible to learn to do.

Many artists try to draw the difficult way to begin with and give up because it's too hard. There are ways of making great progress through small steps. Don't try to do too much at once - if you ask any artist, not every piece of art turns out well. Every artist has a large collection of unfinished drawings and paintings because they bit off more than they could chew. My profile picture is a great example of a piece I went back to finish having gained the knowledge of how to do so. that's because of the way art is taught in schools. They only tell you what to do but not HOW to do it. They leave you to discover how by yourself, which many don't manage to in the time given. If they taught you HOW to get certain results, then let you do what you what with the knowledge, I believe that standards would be much higher in most cases. But yes, some are born with a better ability to learn and discover HOW by themselves - these are the "talented".

I think anyone can have the skills to draw but you need the talent to be successful. Only the experienced artists benefit from online tutorials because they have the basic skills to draw. You need to take in person classes so that you have someone right there to assist you if needed,you can't do that online.
