SkyWest pilot here! The interesting thing about our Aspen ops is that the pilots have what's known as a DMA schedule (Designated Mountainous Airports). The bulk of their flying each month is into these DMA airports which have these special departure/arrival procedures. Not to mention that they are re-tested on these (either in the simulator or on the line with a line check captain) every six months. In other words, these pilots go into Aspen and other DMA airports multiple times a week and truly know what they're doing!

Fun fact: the CRJ-700 is the only commercial jet that has the required single engine performance to go into ASE. (That and the Q-400, I believe.) The real kicker are the special "extraction" procedures the pilots have to do when one engine fails after takeoff or on approach. I am excited to see and hear your thoughts on this airport. It is my local airport and I have been a part of the 2 year at this point vision committee for redesigning the airport and discussing whether it should be transitioned into a full AGD3 airport or left how it is with a wingspan restriction, as well as looking at how to update the terminal and infrastructure to meet modern demands in efficiency and customer experience. This has been a very interesting and sometimes controversial process but it will be interesting to see where this airport is headed in the future. It is such a unique airport with an even more unique community that both wants to be the same as it was 20 years ago while also wanting to move into the future. It will be very interesting to see what you think of our airport as someone with an outside perspective but also having a high level of understanding and appreciation of aviation. You need to call this the Mitshubishi CRJ-700 with side note that it used to be Bombardier. Bombardier has no commercial aviation left. (warning long text follows) Some history: In late 1960s Bill Lear sold learjet. In mid 1970s, Bill Lear approached Canadair, a government owned builder of firefighting aircraft and others towards making a wide body business jet, the LearStar. In 1977, Bill Lear was phased out and programme renamed Challenger, tail changed to T-Tail. One of the launch customer was FedEx who wanted Lycoming engines. Challenger got certification in 1980. It had been designed to be stretched and Canadair had made cabin mockups with 2*2 seating instead of the normal business jet interior. Fed Ex pulled out when cheap second hand aircraft became available in USA. Canadair then produced the Challenger 601 with GE CF 34 engines. Side note: In 1973, the Québec government wanted a local company to build the new Métros for Montréal. It asked Bombardier which had, until that point only made snowmobile and snow clearing equipment to enter the train business. To get some expertise, Bombardeir purchased part of MLW (Montréal Locomotive Works) which was working on developping the LRC train, a replacement for the United Aircraft Turbotrains. Eventually, Bombardier bought all of MLW and became a train maker. In 1986, the Canadian government, tired of subsidizing Canadair, got Bombardier to buy Canadair. It also had owned de-Havilland Canada and wanted to privatize it and it was sold to Boeing who inherited the Dash-8 but then sold it to Bombardier some years later. Bombardier saw the original plans to stretch the Challenger to turn it into a regional jet and decided to act on it. They used the original intended name, the Canadair Regional Jet. the stretch continued to use the CF34 engines (as did the -700 and -900) The CRJ100 was born in 1991. quickly updated to the -200 with improved range etc. The plane sold like hot cakes. So much so that by 2000, increasing production rate couldn't be done because the ship that carried fuselage parts from Belfast (Shorts bro now owned by Bombardier) could carry enough, so Bombardier hired an Antonov 124 to make regular deliveries of CRJ fuselanges to Dorval (YUL) where the planes were assembled. On 9-11, while Boeing and Airbus quickly announced plans to scale back production and cancel plans to increase production, Bombardier bragged about being immune and continued its mass production of -200s (and the -700s which were starting). Delta alone had a backlog of 215 planes waiting to be built on 9-11. By 2004, Bombardier had huge surplus of placed and induced a strike to stop production and then blame strike on financial problems that near brought down all of Bombardier. The Beaudoin family (descendants of founder Armand Bombardier) bailed the company out buy buying the recreational products (skidoos, seadoos etc) from Bombardier. (Now BRP Skidoos). At that point, Bombardier had realized the need for bigger plane and its Challenger had been stretched to the max, so it had been working on the C-Series 100 seta jet for some time, and had eyed Nortwhest as launch customer (since it had huge litter of old DC09 to replace) as well as American with all its MD8x planes). The 2004 near bankrupt put the C-Series project on ice. And when it was ready to restart, Norhwest went Chapter 11 and once purchased by Delta, the DC-9s didn't need to be replaced. So eventually Bombardier found Swiss and Baltic Air to help it launch the C-Series and by then had comelling new Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engines to make C-Series more ecompetitive. Problem: at the same time, the business jet division had also launched 2 new planes, the Global 7500 and Learjet 85. With heydays of the CRJ 200 over, Bombardier financed this from cash coming from the train division. The train division then started to be unable to invest to deliver projects on time and lost orders. Bombardier cancelled the Lear 85, losing the billiosn already invested. But that wasn't enough. The Québec government had Bombardier spin off the C-Series into separate company where the Québec government could invest to see the project through without subsidizing the rest. At the same time, the Québec pension plan (CDPQ) did the same with the trains division, except its recapitalisation required garanteed dividends even for a company without cash. While telling shareholder all was fine and giving themselves raises, the execs proceeded to liqidate the company. (Bellemare was just hired at Delta, so expect Delta to go bankrupt BTW) de-Haviland products (firefighter, DASH-8 and previous models) went to Longview Aviation (Viking air and De Havilland Canada got the Dash-8). The CRJ production was ended and the IP, engineers and maintenance contracts sold to Mitsubishi. 50% of C-Series was gifted to Airbus (leaving Bombardier with 30% and Québec govt 20%). After Bombadier was unable to invest to convert production from prototype to volume production, it sold its 30% stake to Airvus for about 400 million (when it had invested billions) leaving Airbus with 75% of C-Series and Québec governmnent 25%. Meanwhile, at Transportation, Bombardier was being sued by customer because of inability to deliver, and HAD to give CDPQ dividends. It was either buying out CDPQ to stop those dividends (had no cash) of sell it. CDPQ had arranged for Alstom to buy it, and CDPQ converted its 35% stake in worthless Bombardier Transportation into 18% stake into Alstom (with seat on board). So all that is left today is the very division that killed Bombarder: the business jet. It still sells the Challenger, has the new Globale 7500 and one or 2 learjet models. Ironically, the Challenger is now built at Dorval where they used to build the CRJ200s. (remember: same fuselage).

@JebBrooks Have you noticed a considerable difference in flying 737s and a321s? I think the 321s are more comfortable. What do you think?
@thecaynuck46943 жыл бұрын
Jeb, just because the CRJ-200 is uncomfortable doesn't make it the worst commercial plane in service! It's extremely safe, reliable and economical even if they are being retired for their bigger brothers, but there are worse rides in terms of comfort and everything else out there. Let's be honest, it's better than any Soviet plane in terms of everything at the very least. And safety comes first, so the CRJ-200 is extremely safe and capable of flying to airports like Aspen. And it transformed regional aviation, whether you like it or not. Regardless though, a CRJ-700/900 is preferred.
