I was a dentist for 37 years. I bought a practice and the building (attatched house) one a half years later. I worked three and a half days a week. I had no one working for me and I thrived. So I didn't like filling out insurance forms and sometimes I didn't. I worked out with weights always and I enjoyed gambling. I stayed away from other dentists, just fixed their crap work on new patients, but never derided their work to a patient. Only my wife stressed me out but I lasted 27 years.Good luck.

what a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing all of this. Not in denistry but in medical school and resonate with a lot of what you are saying in this video. I think a lot of these paths in medicine require people to sacrifice so much of themselves to get the grades, get the admission, get the degree, etc. etc. that to end up in a position with so many stressors that continues to take from family and personal life results in people who aren't well and act out in subpar/assholish ways. Would love to see a video about suicide in dentistry/medicine as well. I love that you are open about what you do to protect your sanity and personhood and appreciate how you speak on your growth through being a business owner. Also your skin is GIVING! So beautiful!

I wonder how many parallels there are between dentistry and medicine! Pretty cool you could relate to a lot of this. Im going to try to find someone who can speak to the stress and suicide rate that dentists experience. It’s so sad that this is happening in dentistry. I hope not in medicine as well.

I work with my husband at his dental practice. At one point we had 2 hygienists and 2 assistants and 2 front staff. Now we are down to me, a front/assistant and my husband after Covid. We actually run the practice pretty well he does the cleanings and actually enjoys the time with his patients. But owning a practice is rough! He had a heart attack this year which was extremely stressful! He was supposed to have open heart surgery but found a cardiologist that placed stents. He went back to work two days later! We are just counting our time till we get our kids through college and then we are retiring!

I always thought it would be stressful to work in a hair salon; people go nuts when their hair isn't cut right. With something as important as tooth repair I can't imagine the customer drama. Plus I'm sure it's tedious making sure to get every detail in someone's mouth done accurately. I couldn't do it.
@Joycethedentist10 ай бұрын
Cosmetic dentistry is kind of a combo. Meeting a patient’s esthetic desires while also nailing the mechanical aspects. It’s also usually irreversible whereas hair grows back 😅

Thank you this video spoke to my heart ❤️ I have been a owner/dentist for 20 years and it has gotten harder each year to keep going. Our current culture values quick fixes and heath has no value for most. I’m praying we can all hang in there!

Love your videos! I work for an Audiologist and we feel the exact same way about insurance!! Most insurance companies pair up with 3rd parties for a small discount and they are usually just a hearing aid sales person… not a doctor! So I am very frank with them on the phone - it’s either you want elite care with an audiologist or you want a cheap deal and not getting the actual service you need for your ears. In my mind it’s a no brainer but people are just out for “deals” now it seems. 😢

Haha I actually filmed it but then it was an hour long video 😂😂😂. Here were the top 3 reasons people loved dentistry: 1. The relationships. There are so many amazing patients out there that make the job fulfilling. Being able to take them out of pain is a superpower. Helping them through fear. Helping transform their confidence. Being able to work w your hands. The relationships are much deeper than with other Docs bc we see them every 6 months. 2. The flexibility - you can be an associate and work 2 days a week. You can own a business if you wanted. Really there’s a lot of ways to do it. I also do content creation so you can segway dentistry into other hobbies too! 3. The amount of time spent relatively still affords a pretty good living. Some people work 2 days a week. This will depend a lot on the situation (like how many student loans someone graduates with) but still reassuring. Hope that helps!

I hate dentistry and, especially, dentists but I'm good at it and have been doing it for 40 years now. My hygienist and front desk lady are both retiring in a couple months and I'm going to go a few more years on my own. No insurance, no hygiene, no employees, if you can find me and you were previously a patient of mine and I enjoy you , I will be glad to do your crown on tooth or implant for a respectable cash payment.Otherwise, go find a young dentist and maybe you'll realize how good you had it here. I have two children and neither one of them ever considered being a dentist for one minute, thank God. I'm a solo practitioner and I own my practice building. I have done what I wanted for most of my life and that matters to me. Would I do it again? Yes, that's why God put me on this planet - to fix people's F'd up,negected mouths. Hey, everyone should so lucky to end up with a couple of stents in their heart, a divorce, 30 extra pounds, .....

Prior to embarking on a career in medicine, I studied accounting, and that was so stressful for me that I withdrew from the program and went the pre-med route.
