Every time we post BFS content we get a pretty even split between "yes, this is awesome!" and "you silly losers should have just bought a spinning reel!" So, it begs the question, should BFS even exist? We dive into some of the key arguments for, and against, BFS fishing. And if we're being honest there's something to be said for both sides.
What's your take on BFS fishing, where is it headed and should we even be headed anywhere!?

It's mostly just preference. Whatever you're more comfortable with is what you should use. Love my baitcasters and for lighter stuff I prefer spinning. It’s hard to beat the smoothness of the spinning reels drag.

i live in the northern part of the midwest and bfs is a bit of a game changer for me. being able to downsize full sized presentations that are traditionally used with regular old casting gear is really nice around smaller fish. the control you have with a baitcaster compared to a spinning rod over finnicky, large bass when you hook them on bfs is great and its just plain fun. Something about pitching around a micro jig/micro texas rig on a spinning rod just doesnt feel right to me, so i got into bfs. the last several bass ive caught over 4-5lbs were all on bfs, and ive been catching them more frequently and consistently since i started using bfs. it just gets bit in areas where catching anything 6+ is rare.

I usually have about 8 rods on the deck. Usually 50/50 spinning/baitcasting. Now, I have around 60/30/10. Baitcast, BFS, spinning. Main reason is so I can lay the rods in one direction without tripping over the darn spinning rods handle! 😅

Almost the exact same thing happened with Tenkara. Most Americans were like "Why? I've had a cane pole since I was 6 years old," or "Why not just fly fish with real equipment?" Personally, I fell in love with Tenkara because of the artistry, simplicity, and mostly the fun of it. It's just a simple alternative to western style fly fishing. With BFS it's actually not a more simple alternative to spinning ultralight fishing as much as it's arguably a better alternative. Baitcasters are simply a superior reel system/design to spinning reels. Sure that's a debatable statement, but it's more factual than it is just opinion. I love that I can now do more with a baitcaster. I love using my baitcaster combos, but those were previously only useful for larger fish. I love going after smaller species of fish (hence Tenkara), but I really don't like spinning reels as much as I do baitcasters. All that being said, I'm not jumping headfirst into BFS and throwing a lot of money at it. I currently have one relatively discount BFS combo, and I'm working on putting together a second (but insisting it also be relatively inexpensive). I have probably plunked $100 or so into "BFS" baits/lures, but almost all of those can be used with my ultralight spinning gear, too. I didn't get "suckered" into BFS -- I simply got more interested than I previously was in ultralight because of BFS. I like ultralight fishing, but I also really like baitcasters. For me it was a great answer to a personal dilemma with fishing.

BFS origins as I understand it is from Japan. Japanese trout fishermen to be specific. Using modified old baitcasters, like Abu Garcia type round reels to fish for trout on streams became very popular. Both for the ability to throw very small baits and to make wrist cast in tight spaces. As with many things in Japanese culture, fashion and Esthetics played an equally important role with function. The more this gained popularity the more tackle companies took interest. This is why Shimano made a round BFS reel & Daiwa Silver Creek reel. It all bleed over into the bass work and here we are.

I’ve been fishing BFS since 2009 and still loved to this day. My intro into BFS is after my visiting from Japan start to develop a interested to it and then it’s a obsession now. Early of 2019 as I remember is when BFS is starting to get a lot attention from the mainstream fishing industry after that year Kastking release the first quote and quote and USDM BFS reel the Zephyr that is budget friendly too. But just a side note this is not the first the time the US fishing mainstream industry tries to bring over BFS. They try back in 2012 by tackle warehouse, but it was never catch on to most angler due to price given at that time. So my opinion on “should you or should you not” buy into this BFS thing people calling it scams? The real question is are you a person love to try new things or do you want it when it comes to fishing? If your answer is “No” then don’t buy it; it doesn’t get any simpler as that. Seriously… this shouldn’t be any debate at all. I’m surprise there’s stup!d people complain about shit they don’t want it. Plus in my honest opinion as a person who been doing BFS fishing for so long; if you think BFS is stupid and it’s a scam? then the BFS community don’t need you neither, because you’re giving the BFS genre a bad reps and don’t need negative narrow minded nut head to this community. There I say it 😂

I've never fished a bait casting rod. I've only fished smaller, fresh water bait casting reels, down tide fishing off a boat. Never tried casting. Because I've never had any instructions / tuition on how to use the reels casting and how to set them up correctly. I think using a bait casting reel set up to me, is technically more difficult, than using a spinning reel casting. I use spinning reels for beach fishing. But I know people who are definitely cast further using multiplier reels / larger bait casting reels. So I would very much like to learn how to use a bait casting set up. But don't have the confidence to try it, without help and tuition. Sadly I don't know anyone in the UK, who fishes that way. Don't think I've honestly seen that many bait casting rods / reels in the tackle shops either. But then I'm not really looking. Learning a great deal more from your channel and adapting methods to spinning.

I hate spinning reels and won't use them. My "bfs" is a dobyns sierra ultra finesse 7ft light extra fast rod with jdm shimano slx dc xt 70 reel and 8lb fluorocarbon. I don't need to throw anything less than 1/16oz for bass or use 4lb fluorocarbon. If you were fishing for trout or bluegill, you could go lighter, but i don't see any reason for bass fishing. Either way, use whatever you want.

for me bfs isn’t for throwing 1/32nd trout magnets. It’s for throwing heavier crappie jigs, 2 and 2.8 inch swimbaits, booyah pond magic spinnerbaits, 65mm jerkbaits , ned rigs etc. Casts these baits amazingly but for the truly small stuff I still prefer spinning for ease of use.

It is not a scam or to replace spinning gear. The correct term is bait finesse,BFS is a term owned by shimano and used for thier bait finesse reels and rods. Bait finesse has its place especially in japan. The bait finesse concept was developed by pro bass angler yukihiro sawamura in 2011 for highly pressured bass in clear water lakes,in or around cover and structure. The biggest advantage it has against spinning gear is the ability to use heavier lines 6-12lb fluorocarbon that would be a hassle to use with spinning reels, 2-5 lb fluorocarbon is what they use in japan for finesse fishing with spinning gear and still be able to pitch or skip light weight usally 3.5-5 gram lures/soft plastic rigs around cover and structure keep in mind japanese bass fishing is mostly done with fluorocarbon line. Bait finesse originated as a cover fishing technique that utilizes light weight shallow spool baitcasters with high gear ratios and rods with strong backbone and soft tips to help pitch or skip the light baits and stop bass from going back in cover. Japanese Bait finesse rods are mainly bass rod's with fast actions and soft tips even the UL and Light power models have serious backbone and fast action's.

As I commented more or less with the same words a couple weeks ago: If I prefer throwing a 3/8oz or a 1/2oz lure on a baitcaster instead of on spinning gear, why is it strange if I also would prefer throwing a 1/8 or 1/4oz lure on a baitcaster as long as it's castable? The inherent benefits of a baitcasting setup don't evaporate into thin air just because we go down in lure weights.

You can 100% throw 1/8oz on a none bfs reel lol. Diawa ca80, shimano slx mgl 70 will cast that all day on a medium rod lol. @@blind_eye_fishing That seals it -- BFS is a scam. That's a quick transition though from not being able to throw 1/16 at all but being able to throw 1/8 "100%" on a non-BFS reel and medium rod. If you throw a 1/8oz crankbait "100%" on that setup I can only congratulate you. But there's more to it than castability, how lightweight the overall setup is for example. The Shimano SLX MGL 70, however great for its price, comes in at 200g. That's 65g or over 2oz more than my $80 BFS reel...

Last year I caught an 11# 7 oz catfish on a 4’ ultra, ultra light spinning rod using 4# line. Who cares what rod I used, except for me it was the most fun catch I’ve ever had in 60 years of fishing. That includes any equipment and any fish. Even a 44.5” (25#) Muskie on much heavier casting equipment. Sometimes I wonder if the "You don't need X" crowd even enjoy fishing. They talk about fishing as if they only fish because someone told them to ("You sir, go and have fishing as a hobby" ... "Ok, I guess I'll have to do as you say"), and now their only goal is to get something "useful" out of it by getting to X amount/size of fish caught on the smallest budget possible, without even having the level of enjoyment enter the equation. Let clear up a few things since you've been trying to pop off on us in our comments though... 1. We don't sell any rods. We did a collab with Monsterbass last year on a SPINNING rod. We don't work with them anymore. 2. We don't work with any of these companies, so whether you buy them or not doesn't bother us. 3. Send us the links to these products that are 1/5 the price so we can put them head to head in a video with the overpriced options and prove that the cheaper ones are better. Thanks

I come from a tournament background and love BFS. Baitcasters lay on deck much better, tangle way less often, and are way more accurate to cast. A note to you guys on speed. A Bfs reel is not even close to a spinning reel in line pick up. When you have a micro spool you need like twice the gear ratio to pick up the same line. The main factor for Bfs is FUN. I could teach you guys a thing or twelve. Keep Chankin' Bros. Yankeelipper

There is absolutely nothing I can do on bfs that I can't do on spin.. you absolutely don't need it.. but it's fun throwing around finesse lures on a baitcaster. Here in Australia, we do a lot of finesse fishing for bream, and for a long time I wanted a BC that I could use for bream when the bass season finishes here. Now that it's possible, I have 3 bfs combos in the boat at all times. The biggest issue with bfs is domestic availability and our fishing here is done primarily in salt water. A lot of BC reels don't handle salt well. Pretty much all spin reels sold on the Aussie market are designed for salt water use, and if they aren't, they don't sell.

@@leepao6302 simple fact is it 100% is a cash grab for many of the companies. You can do exactly the same things with standard reels on a medium or medium light rod ad so called bfs setups. Now I'm not saying all are that but...for the most part it is. Without upgrading multiple things in most the reels you won't cast light (actual ultra light) lures on them. @Tightt88
@Tightt88 2 ай бұрын
@@paulglass7268 I’ll ask you this, what can you do on a BFS that you can’t do on a UL-light spinning setup? The answer? Nothing. And I don’t understand the second part of your reply. All I know is that I can go out right now and buy a quality 500-1000 size spinning reel from numerous brands for $40 and if I want to buy an equivalent BFS, I am spending minimum $100. Not to mention, BFS rods are ridiculously priced too. When I can go out and spend literally $20 on a Micro Series rod (which is fantastic). So $60 (spinning) investment vs $200 plus (BFS) investment. And the BFS doesn’t do anything that a UL spinning can’t do. If you like BFS because you like bait-casters that’s fine, but don’t sit here and make things up saying that “BFS” does different stuff when it doesn’t. You’re going to influence people to spend unnecessary money and potentially sour them on the fishing market.
@Tightt88
@Tightt88 2 ай бұрын
I’ll ask you this, what can a BFS setup do that a UL-L spinning setup can’t do. The answer is, nothing. Which is fine, the issue we arrive at though is that BFS is far more expensive and there really isn’t a demand for it. If there were, you would see BFS at all major retail stores. So it’s the fishing companies trying to force gear no one wants for much higher prices. The other issue is, influencers are making regular people feel like they need this over priced gear when they don’t. And I know numerous people who invested in BFS and they felt robbed. It soured them on fishing. And why wouldn’t they? I can go out and buy a good quality $40 UL spinning reel and a fantastic $20 Micro Series rod ($60 total investment) vs a minimum of $100 for a BFS reel and another $100 for a BFS rod. $60 vs $200 plus? I’ll go with $60. Love the channel buy the way! Keep up the great work!
