I have always heard about bioshock Infinite and how bad it is. But as someone who hasn't played is it really that bad? or is there something more to it? Check out how I feel about this game after many years of anticipation.

I'm going to start this off by defending the 122 scene at the start. The Bioshock series has never been a series of puzzle games, and the 122 Scene was just an interactive cutscene (on par with Langford writing the combination to her safe as Ryan killed her). Specifically, 122 is part of a more intricate puzzle, as that number is very significant at the start of the game (according to the loading screen, Booker's card for the Pinkertons was issued on January 22, and a clock in the Lighthouse saying 1:22). Why is this important? Because the canon explanation for death is that every time Booker dies, the Luteces go to another reality and start over with a new Booker, with you being the 123rd Booker they hired when you meet them for the coin toss scene. The implication of 122 is that you start as 122, and die at some point between the start and meeting the Luteces. What point? The Baptism with Preacher Witting, when Booker is drowned. Why do I say this? Because it ends with Booker having a dream/ flashback. Every time you have one of these flashbacks, the hinges on the door to Anna's room changes side (without exception), implying that you are changing Bookers every time. That, coupled with the fact that each of these scenes happens after Booker gets severely hurt or concussed, suggests that you are dying, and seeing the cognitive dissonance/ memory alteration for each new Booker. In short, 122 wasn't a puzzle, it was a puzzle piece. (On a side note, that's why they needed to destroy Comstock at the end of the game: Booker doesn't recognize the failed attempts, but Liz, the Luteces, and attentive players do. Erasing those timelines by preventing Comstock's existence is the only way to resolve this. of course, the main game never confirms that this works. It left it open to interpretation - until Burial at Sea, but that's a rant for another day) And that pretty much sums up the story. Levine wanted this story to be ambiguous and surrealistic (in a manner akin to Five Nights at Freddy's, in which the timeline is deliberately incomprehensible). It's supposed to be a reference to the Quantum Superposition, in which something exists in multiple states simultaneously (like the Luteces' Infusions) until you make a decision. There are multiple versions of Infinite's story, existing in all of our minds, with no true interpretation of what's going on (until Burial at Sea, at least, but I already ranted a bit about that). It's not perfect. There are some moments where the game is trying to have hard rules only to screw up (like how and when transdimensional travel affects the mind), or some things that needed to be clearer (like the limits to the Luteces's abilities - there are plenty of pieces of evidence to infer their limits, but given that they're an unambiguous ally, it needed to be harder). But you need to look at this as less a concrete story and more an open-ended one (like FNAF). Likewise, I'll defend the lack of an explanation for Fink's technology. Prior to BaS, there was actually ample evidence to suggest that he was stealing from Rapture. There were at least 2 Voxophones alluding to science he was stealing (one concerning a cyborg, positioned next to Songbird's blueprints, and another alluding to a special biologist, next to ALbert Fink's corpse). On top of that, his vending machines have a tendency to rip off famous lines from the Rapture vending machines ("Come back when you get some currency, fella!" as opposed to "Come back when you get some money, buddy!"). Further stressing it is that Infinite's story is a soft retelling of the original (you're a man who enters a lighthouse, you have to save a girl from a monster, you ally with a rebel only for the rebel to betray you, etc). Their arrival in Rapture at the end wasn't just a bit of fanservice: It was a punchline at the end of the references, telling you that this is where FInk has been stealing his tech from. You really didn't need BaS to realize this (and that's part of why I despise the DLC; it felt like Ken was just throwing his arms into the air and saying, "Guess I'll just spell it out." I found the implication more interesting than the confirmation). Going forward, I also want to give a brief defense of Lady Comstock and the Handymen. Personally, I recognize the flaws of LC, but I never had trouble with her. And the Handymen... I actually love to fight. And that's because I know how to engage with the game's tools. Infinite is largely about improvisation and mobility, adjusting your tactics to an everchanging battlefield (jumping to and from Skylines, getting new weapons, and changing your Gear). Lady Comstock can be easily destroyed by using a combination of Burning Halo and Brittle Skin (which makes enemies vulnerable to double damage upon melee strike), both of which amplify Charge. You make her twice as vulnerable, and deal fire damage (and even spread fire to her corpses). Further, if you burn of electrocute corpses, or knock them off Columbia, you can destroy them altogether and keep her from bringing them back. Of course, you still have to kill her fast, because she regains health, and lengthens her max health, every time she revives them, which admittedly adds tedium. Handymen. Again, Charge tears into them pretty quickly with what I listed above. Also, if you combine various Skyline Gear, you can bait Handymen into latching onto the Skyline (making them vulnerable), and get quick buffs to give you an advantage. Don't use Shock Jockey, they're immune. Use Crows to stun instead. Honestly, the only tedious one is the first, because you don't have the best powers or a Skyline to help out. To give you an idea of how easy they are to fight, here's one of my tactics: Combine Bloodlust (which increases your weapon damage every time you kill an enemy) with Brittle Skin. This combo will only be available for the final Handyman, but it's worth noting. When you get to him, start killing the smaller enemies first, then ram him. You will be dealing 5X damage against an enemy that's taking twice as much as usual. He'll go down easily. And this is why I like Infinite so much. Contrary to what so many believe, the combat is very fun and engaging, rewarding you for using its mechanics. Sure, it doesn't do well in the trap setting department (though, if you combine trap-related Gear with Return to Sender, it'll amplify the Vigor's abilities), but it makes up for it with a more dynamic present combat. If I can give one final defense, I think the game paces itself fairly well. It's not a story about worldbuilding so much as it is about Booker trying to come to terms with Wounded Knee and the effects that his obsession with the event have on his daughter. Levine likes to write stories about destiny, and Infinite is a surrealistic story about a man condemned to live the same life in every reality, regardless of how many timelines there are (which is on par with a Twilight Zone episode if you think about it). It's why Comstock waxes on about destiny; because he's seen the timelines and he knows that Elizabeth's fate is locked in place: She is always made to pay for Booker's gambling debts (which was his coping habit to deal with his self-loathing), and she must always lead Comstock's crusade (which is not only why Comstock needed a blood heir - there exists no reality where it succeeds without an heir - but also Comstock's coping habit; fighting his own guilt by adopting white supremacist beliefs). So, that the game moves quickly through these is justifiable, as you get what you need (the Vox Rebellion shows Liz facing her own guilt, Lady Comstock shows Liz the importance of forgiveness - which she needs in order to save Booker and Comstock from themselves - the 1984 reality shows the consequence of death in every reality, etc). It's ultimately a story of a man who keeps hurting his daughter because he won't let go of the past, and it's not until they understand the power of forgiveness that they have a chance of changing destiny. Sorry if this went on a while. I just have a lot of things to say about the game. It's imperfect, yet, but most of the problems people complain about have explanations. I hope this was an insightful read if nothing else.

I can honestly agree with most of this and understand why people would like this stuff outside of a few things. The 122 scene for me while I understand is significant when portrayed to the player is more comical than serious due to how it was done, like I genuinely laughed and wrote it off as stupid because how comical it was. I think that leads me and likely most people to not really care for the significance or take that serious when it is done that way. Handyman imo are still just not fun to fight because even when taking advantage of all your tools they remain pretty girthy and don't really have good rewards when killing them like daddies who feel rewarding to kill. Lady Comstock imo brings light to that most players likely wont engage with gear enough to actually use it like tonics due to how its implemented when they fight her. She really is too tanks and out of place which is why so many people don't like her as a boss and compare her to Fontaine's fight in the sense that she doesn't belong. On the topic of time travel and all the booker and Elizabeth relationship stuff I do see that now and do really like there relationship stuff but it still does feel like a missed opportunity with a lot of the dropped or surface deep plots. I think they might have gone too deep with time travel to where it doesn't make sense, id actually direct you to B4Brandoss video on buried at sea which makes good points on a lot of the time travel issues i have as well. I personally don't like to write off peoples complaints having explanations and reasonings due to that if plenty of people have the same problems it might be an issue with the issue itself and not the people. I do hope this didn't come off as rude at all because I genuinely enjoyed hearing your opinions and reasoning even if we disagree a little. I greatly appreciate your time for not just watching but also caring enough to make a comment this long, dw if it takes a while I always enjoy hearing peoples thoughts and opinions.

Mostly agree - one thing though.. You do learn about Fink stealing the ideas from Rapture in the base game, not just in the DLC, mostly through voxophones. Fink's brother is a musician who discovered the first tears, and used the music he heard coming through them to "write" his popular songs. It's why the barbershop quartet near the beginning is singing an anachronistic Beach Boys song. Fink used the tears for stealing a lot more than music.
@MalcadorGaming

That explains how they got that music but not stuff from rapture. Maybe it's implied if you think about it but I don't think it's enough

Unfortunately, I actually greatly disliked bioshock infinite. I don't think I liked anything really. Rapture felt cool and somewhat believable, whereas Columbia felt like total magical nonsense. The quantum physics angle existed in bioshock with the vita-chambers, but they always felt hand-wavey there, and the magical floating cities that also have balloons for some reason went way over the line for me. Comstock is the worst villain in the series by far. The plot was so disorganized that he just came off as a random grifter *cough* fontaine *cough*. Andrew Ryan actually believed in his ideals and even dies by them, but Comstock just came off as a crazy evil guy with a cult. Not only that, but he talks to you a grand total of what, 3 times? Then booker just suddenly murks him at the end of the game? No confrontation between him and elizabeth? What the hell. Combat was also a mess. No more weapon wheel, just 2 guns, plus upgrades are, ironically, a huge downgrade. The PthP stations were way better. Shock jockey was a worse version of the supremely op bucking bronco. The shield/health/salts/clothing upgrade system was a huge step down from the gene tonics. Elizabeth was okay, but she ruined the flow by just giving you whatever you needed. It rewarded poor resource management. Why conserve salts or ammo when lizzy might just toss you some more? Also her design. Like the little sisters in bioshock 1, she had massive bug eyes that creeped me the fuck out. Except in infinite, she's not supposed to be creepy. It also felt manipulative as a design choice. They said in interviews that people didn't care about her enough, which is why they added these things, but that's more of a writing problem isn't it? Speaking of which, the plot. It's nonsense. What exactly are Elizabeth's powers? She can see through and open holes to other universes? Why does lady comstock turn into a magical screaming ghost then? Why doesn't she just open a tear to paris and leave? She did it in the beginning of the game. Why not just make a parachute and jump? Why do they go to a parallel universe to get the guns? Parallel daisy isn't going to know about any deal. Why do they kill booker? Couldn't they just come a few minutes later and kill just the ones that went through with the baptism? Or just stop the baptism? Shoot booker in the leg? Don't even get me started on the DLCs. So many silly, pointless retcons. Infinite was in development hell, so maybe that's why it's so disjointed, but what about the DLCs? It was so bad for me that I even started to go back and question if bioshock 1 was even that good. The visuals were nice though.

Honestly I’d like it a lot more if it wasn’t called BioShock. The gameplay is a straight up downgrade from BioShock 2. The story is just….yeah I like the visuals of the base game and the DLC, but the gameplay of both aren’t that good. I’d honestly say both previous BioShock games have better gameplay, which isn’t exactly good for the last game. Anyways, I only care so much because I liked the first two a lot. I felt for the hype when this game out; I even cosplay Booker with my sister as Elizabeth at Supercon 2013. The final trailers for the game really hyped it up that I think it made me see the game through rose color glasses. I also only pay attention to the first half and not the second half, which I think was why I gloss over the problems. I mean I knew the ending didn't make sense but I thought it was only me who didn't get it and that actually the story is well plan out with just me not getting it. When Burial at Sea happened I thought it was meh and shocking, and from that forgotten about Infinite for a while. It was only couple of years ago when I looked back a this game's story and came to the realization it was a mess. I still love it since it got me through 2013 (which was a stressful year for me) but I admit it was a missed opportunity of a game. Recently played and beat infinite again after a 10 year gap of last having beat it the 2nd time. I honestly think it holds up really well today. I thought the voice acting was incredible, the visuals are stunning especially for 2013, and the world-building is superb. I understand the hate it gets in terms of story, and I think most of the criticisms are valid. I also recognize it is very watered down compared to what we were promised because of development crunches forcing content cuts. That being said, what we got was still a great game. But that's almost the problem in itself. The game was so good despite being so watered down, it could have been a masterpiece if it was given even 1 more year of development. It's one of my favorite games, and I'd easy go back in time now just to tell them to give it more time so they didn't have to cut as much content. But yeah, just my thoughts. The game is very flawed, but I still love it dearly

My biggest complaints about this game: -it's a Bioshock game in name only, it has a complete and entirely different feel to it than the previous games. I wish they'd kept it with a different name, but alas, the suits forced it to be a Bioshock game because it drives sales. It is not a Bioshock game because it offers very little in terms of variety of builds, choices, and approach of combat. Not to mention that the game just... kinda lied in its trailers? You look back on the trailers for this game, and it felt like it would be MUCH more open and free than it was in the final release. -The Skyline/Skyhook was a complete letdown. -The biggest problem with this game is, imo, Elizabeth's role with the player. Hang on, I don't mean her as a character, nor that she is "unhelpful". Think about it, whenever you feel like she is helping you by finding and giving you stuff, I want you to notice this. This game's combat design, the fact that it works like Halo, with shields, the two weapon inventory, the weapon swapping because you ran out of ammo, and the measly upgrades that make no sense, etc. It's all so SHE can be useful. The game crippled YOU so that Elizabeth could shine. THAT is my issue.

This game has a number of plot-holes however there is 1 that sticks out to me. So in the timeline where the Vox Pupuly got there weapons the Booker from that Timeline joined the Vox, because the Elizabeth from that timeline got moved from Monument Island to Comstock House, but died in battle in before he could reach her. However, when the Booker and Elizabeth we follow enter the timeline where the Vox Pupuly got there weapons the Elizabeth from THAT timeline is no where to be found. The game kind of forgets that our heroes jumped universes as evidenced by Comstock not acknowliging that he's now dealing with 2 Elizabeths. 2 people tried to debunk this plot-hole by either saying that the Elizabeth from THAT timeline escaped and left Paris or that Elizabeth's powers involve her merging unverse that she hops between. Both these explaintins cannot be found in the game, so I'm just going to conclude that those 2 people were just pulling those explanations out of there asses, because there that in love with the game. And you know, we could had a fully brainwashed and fully juiced up Elizabeth be the final boss of this game. Alternatively, we could have just have Booker and Elizabeth teleport the guns needed for the uprising to their own universe, before then joining the Vox. Booker Elizabeth and the Vox then storm the factory, but once they plan on killing Fink's son, Our heroes desert the Vox by killing Fitzroy.

Infinite is bad for one simple reason...it takes ALL choice away from the player! with BL1, 2 and Minerva YOU got to choose how to play, you could be a plasmid wizard hurling fireballs, you could be a melee brawler bashing away, you could be a gunslinger ignoring plasmids except for utility, or you could go Batman and set traps with a combo of plasmids and hacks, it was all up to YOU and all choices were equally valid. In Bioshock Infinite? "Fuck you here is the skyhook". Most of the passive buffs were based on skyhook, a lot of the gear was based on skyhook, and they made the guns and plasmids notably weaker so you would be forced to ride the skyhook more often. It was like the devs just fell in love with skyhook and gave up on actually giving players any other choices. With the other 3 games you could play from start to finish as anything from a spellcaster to a straight up button basher and still win the game, if you want to play Infinite without skyhook? You can't, it cannot be done, which is why BL:I is the one I never go back to, its boring focus on only 1 thing kills it.

Left the video a thumbs up bc of the hardwork and funny E;R style editing memes, but man this video was really weird. You spend the entire video praising the game and then at the end act conflicted on whether or not it's a good game which was just huh? If you haven't given them a listen to then watch MatthewMatosis's legendary review of infinite, and LoveLifeandAnarchy's video on the story/philosophy of bioshock. Infinite is a soulless cashgrab "7th gen shooter" in gameplay and story. MatthewMatosis explains it way better than I do but the short of it is that the combat was dumbed down to HP regen 2 weapon cod shit of the day and if you want a fast paced single player shooter then there's fantastic ones out there WAY more worth your time than this like DOOM2016, Wolfenstein oldblood, and Titanfall2. As for the lore and story, it's also completely soulless when compared to the juggernaut that is rapture's setting. Every single gat damn thing in bioshock 1&2 has some sort of tie to the lore and setting. Rapture is an Ayn Rand anarcho capitalist "utopia" like Galt's Gulch in "Atlas Shrugged" where as Columbia is just rapture in the sky with NONE of the deep philophical meanings behind it. The big daddy's came from the little sister's needing protection, the little sister's needed protection bc they collected rapture's drug "ADAM" which all the citizens were addicted to, they were addicted to it because Fontane purposefully made them so to keep the splicers coming to him and we can keep going. The handymen are there because.....uhh....remember big daddies?! The plasmids were another product of science unbound in an anarcho captialist society and the moral ramifications of that with metric shit tons of backstory behind them. The vigors are there because uh....we need a grenade in our FPS shooter. This game is 95% soulless and it's a damn shame because I followed this game religiously (pun intended) during the lead up to it watching it change builds so many times (God I must have watched that FIRST gameplay video so many times when I was in high school). And there seemed to be just as much going on this time with the lore and philosophy that got buried under then game's development hell. I think I'm the ONLY one the drew the connection between Comstock and Karl Marx and the Vox Populi to the republicans in the spanish revolution giving the game an anti communist theme where as the original bioshock had a theme centered around Anarcho Capitalism. Would really love to discuss this with you some time. You've earned a sub and I'll check out the Prey video bc I just finished that game for the first time. Watch those videos I recommended.

I praised a lot of this game because I genuinely believe the mechanics for the most part are pretty decent and fun to use. However decent is the issue, it doesn't really shine anywhere and as a result is mostly a game the doesn't break the mold even with those decent mechanics like shooting. The story was fairly ok but nothing special as well. The big thing I've realized recently is that I do think bioshock infinite is a bad bioshock game, however like Ninja theorys dmc I think it is fundamentaly a good video game. I think if it wasn't a bioshock game it would be remembered better but do agree as a bioshock game it isn't great. TLDR There are things to love and things to hate, but it's not necessary that bad or that good

I also agree that their are definitely better shooters to play like titanfall 2s story or doom like you mentioned, but don't think it's entirely soulless. This game really was carried by booker and Elizabeth's relationship which 100% was the only reason I finished it, thanks for giving this a watch and leaving your opinion btw! I do this for these kinda discussions

I honestly loved BioShock infinite. Sure, it wasn't as good as the first game, but it was super fun and I really liked the story despite everything. The only real flaw I have with this game is literally the last combat sequence. It lasted for wayyyy too long imo, and started to be annoying rather than actually a fun challange.

@@MalcadorGaming i think the gameplay is incredibly uninteresting becouse its very much a shooter you know. It has a very high tempo with minimal time to smell the roses like Bioshock 1 and 2 has. It also lacks the atmosphere of 1 and 2. The story doesnt say anything about anything witch is a huge missed opportunity becouse i love Colombia and it could be the center for allot of interesting discussions about religious exstrmism. I dont care for the characters of infinite what so ever and the vigors are dumbed down from 1 and 2. They also make 0 sence in Colombia. Youd think a society based on religion would be against toying with gods creation but Nope apparently not🤷. @@MalcadorGamingi think burial at sea killed the franchise off for good because it holds raptures lore hostage and also the story could not have happened according to infinites own universe rules. Ive though allot about how i wouldve made infinite these last couple of days and i havnt been able to come to a conclusion. I think it would be close to impossible to do the slow, atmospheric gameplay of Bioshock 1 and 2 in a city that hasnt gone to shit like rapture. Vigors makes 0 sence in the setting like i just said but without them the game wouldve been even worse.

You are actually claiming that nobody has ever stated reasons WHY they think Infinite is bad? You're serious? There are hours long videos about it. Comments across the Internet from KZbin to Reddit and beyond. It is known to be the least liked in the series, by the majority of players, while 2 has slowly gained favor with the community. Personally, I like the game. The story tries too hard at points, and the gameplay can become tedious when certain encounters drag on, but overall it's a great game. But for you to state that it isn't bad AT ALL (plenty of issues. 2 weapon limit. Lacks immersive sim elements of the first two games. Constant need to open every drawer and search every trash can. Bad economy. Etc) And then you say nobody actually gave reasons why it's bad 😂 what kinda fanboy are you? How about the absolute most popular complaint: it isn't what the trailers promised. It's a "good game" but not a good "BioShock" game.

The story of the games feel so scatter brain to me. Everything it tries to say either comes off wrong or just falls flat entirely, especially when it comes to its commentary on America’s past and racial injustice. It tries to paint the vox populi just as bad as Comstock, trying to say that violence is never good no matter who it’s targeted to. However, emphasis on TRIES, because it comes off as underbaked and shallow, and at its worse acts like their horrible for fighting back a inherently bigoted system that comstock has created. They did the leader of the Vox especially dirty, by completely rushing her development with the excuse of “being in a different universe,” where she attempts to murder a child, which comes out of nowhere. The DLC makes it even worse. The game overall just feels overstuffed and unfocused. It had something going, it felt like it was going to say something, but it loses its self in its overindulgence in its big ideas.
