To understand what Bitcoin is, you have to understand what it isn’t. Gold. Gold is a highly price manipulated metal element with few practical industrial uses. It is a traditional monetary reserve because it is perceived to have an intrinsic value in good and bad times. Fine art is another area of perceived value, also highly manipulated. If Bitcoin sticks around long enough that people start believing it is a more desirable store of value than gold, it could create some serious doubts in currencies that have built their foundations on gold.
