Once things reopen where I live I will be looking for a different martial art gym and im considering doing Judo instead of BJJ for a couple reasons. 1. Judokas tend to be better athletes they understand that strength and aggression is important where as BJJ will attract alot of weak hipsters who will get mad if you hit the gym and use some strength. To me being mad at a fighter for being strong is ridiculous as long as there not just relying on strength. 2. Ive always found when we did a little bit of Judo in BJJ class that was the most fun part of training 3. For self defense I would rather be able to throw someone than pull guard and go for a triangle. I think alot of BJJ guys have an unrealistic expectation of what would happen in a street fight. Sliding around on our back on a matt is obviously different than a street fight and most of them never practise takedowns in randori. 4. I did security with a bouncer who had a black belt in Judo and a purple belt in BJJ. A drunk guy swung on him one night and I witnessed him dodge the punch than immediately grab the mans jacket and throw him. The look on the drunks guys face was like he instantly did not want to fight anymore. I started picking his brain about it because I was interested in getting involved with martial arts and he told me you're not going to use that much BJJ in a street fight

The type of person who is successful in Bjj and the type of person toward’s whom Bjj is marketed towards are very different. Successful competitors and high level belts are the same people who would do well in other martial arts because they’ve obsessed over proficiency and gaining every advantage possible ( improving strength & conditioning), versus the many hobbyists who are fooled into thinking they have a “superpower” via just technique. Those same people would’ve trained in taekwando or aikido 20 years ago before BJJ was mainstream.

I trained at one of Canada's 10th planet gyms in Peterborough Ontario. They literally never covered basics, they always focused on fancy techniques. This is a problem with a lot of Brazilian jiu-jitsu schools I think. I feel if I didn't already have a background in submission wrestling, I would not have picked up anything while training there. It's a shame that wrestling isn't more popular in Canada, as I feel that would be the perfect martial art for me with its focus on takedowns, strength training, and very straightforward techniques.

I watched some grappling on Teach Me Grappling between a wrestler and BJJ guy. The wrestler was so smooth and fast with his takedowns and control. I wrestled a little in college and since then have learned submissions. I also feel comfortable grappling off my back. Seems like a reasonable way to go. I don't care about rank, just learning skills.

Felt late to the game my self so I’m trying to catch up. I’m a life long martial artist as well. Black belt in taekwondo, years of boxing and Muay Thai. And a blue belt in Krav Maga. I did like 6 months of prior BJJ and a few months of judo a couple years back. Been a cop for a couple years and realized how important grappling arts are. No interest in competition beyond low level locals, however; in the future id like to open a self defense gym.

Fighting for a superior grip before throwing is extremly important. you should have your strong hand at your opponents bodycenter and your weak hand at his arm to controll him. Therefor you need to have the same sided foot in front. BUT if you are a lefty or just used to fight like that, it can be a huge advantage! Everyone hates it to fight against good lefties its pretty nerving and most are just not used to it. Like in boxing. I always had very weak joints and was never able to bring my right handed grip through. So i just switched, wasnt easy at first (doing the throws the mirrored way needs practice) but it helped me a lot! You wont have big problems doing it left sided, just talk with the coach about it. What i like most about it: your opponents hip is easier to reach. But same for your hip! You give him/her the initiative to attack first because of you weaker grip. You need a good counter game and good footwork

I think alot of these arguments are pointless now that the actual history of bjj is getting out there. As Pedro Valente said, judo/bjj/etc are all different expressions of the source in koryu Jujutsu. In general I think Bjj and Judo both don't look as different to what the Japanese were doing even in the 1800s as some ppl would have you believe.

I completely agree on your objective analysis by breaking up the two into their sport, martial art, and street components. It's not one-size-fits-all so you do have to look at it from the various aspects and then come to some overall "rating". In the sports arena the scoring systems are totally different. What would earn you the win in a Judo competition doesn't mean much in a BJJ match, and if a BJJ guy took longer than 10 sec in a Judo match to try and submit his opponent, the ref would call "mate" and put them back up in standing. He would probably also lose very, very quickly according to Judo rules. In my opinion, Judo is more fun to learn and certainly more exciting to watch. But if BJJ puts you in your happy place then more power to you. Just don't try to spout some bravado nonsense that it's better than Judo.

I don't know man at this point I know that I'm just written off and my opinion doesn't really count for crap LOL however my particular interest in the martial arts especially the grappling martial arts is that I believe Judo is superior to BJJ and every way possible! I think that Judo is simply awesome and offers way many more benefits than BJJ! Balance, core stability and strength throughout the whole body as well as sensing an opponent's energy while standing and break falling techniques to save your life! And yes ground grappling as well as throwing! Not this pulling guard nonsense that could get the back of your skull smashed or simply just put you in a bad position! There is a saying if you know Judo you know jiu jitsu not the other way around!

But seriously I do agree with everything you said, it all comes down to the person training, styles of martial art don't matter much ((if it is a real sparring martial art)and of course there is grappling vs striking mismatches) if a person trains themselves to a very high level.

I'm not going to comment on Bjj, as I've never done it. I have done ne waza (ground work) with Bjj guys, and they were very good (obviously) but very slow. What I mean is in a judo competition their ne waza skills wouldn't be very useful as the clock would stop and they would be asked to get up. As for tachi waza (throws) they were absolutely rubbish. I mean not even white belt level. I guess it's comparing apples and oranges as the rules are so different.

I believe that Judo is theoretically better than BJJ in self-defense, especially for having a more explosive approach. However there are two things that counter this argument, first is that BJJ has some non gi variants, while judo always uses gi and this is a problem because in real life unless the person is wearing a jacket it is not possible to apply the techniques that use gi. And the second is that the rules of judo impose greater limitations on certain techniques that are allowed in BJJ that can be useful in self-defense.

But I'm not an idiot saying Judo is superior to any types of martial art, I also took BJJ at the same time. for me personally bjj marketing puts me off. it is very much overpriced and it is not at all a complete well rounded martial art as it is marketed to be. take down and throws are practised in majority of clubs without resisting opponent- just drilling therefore you may as well not do it at all as you are wasting your time. drilling and then actually trying to implement it I a fight so to speak yes but drilling and then starting from the ground as most of bjj guys are doing is unrealistic and obviously there is no progress in stand up game which is very important. I have done bjj for good few years and my takedowns and throws were useless. I have since transitioned to judo and what I like about it is much more honest approach- nobody is trying to sell me any ideal that skill of judo translated to everything else in life and after training judo I'll be better at anything else- no, if I train judo I'll be good at judo- period. if you train ground game without takedowns with resisting opponents you will be good at ground game and useless at bringing game to the ground. I love more realistic energy of judo randori and I genuine honest approach- it is a sport and that's all it is- great sport. one more thing to add bjj as Gracie's trained it in preparation to ufc1 was obviously completely different animal! they have been exposed to strikes and learnt how to deal with it and how to bring the game to the ground. Gracie's were great fighters that were obviously exposed to dealing with all sorts of situations not just to another grapplers that don't strike and just start on the ground or even worst from the knees.

if John meant that it is difficult to judoka get thrown by another judoka because they are both trained then I agree with him-exlerienced judokas, wrestlers have excellent balance and they are much more difficult to bring to the ground. but if John meant that it is difficult for judoka to throw usual but experienced bjj player that hasn't got much experience in takedown , throws etc than that is a nonsense. bjj players are very easy to throw or take down as they are basically white Belts at judo and very bad wrestlers too.

John can tell you what he meant, John's right here. My point is, Yes, Judo throws work 100 percent.. Alot of the younger guys I know who wrestle in school, using their Judo background I've seen alot go on to regionals and states. If you can throw around a wrestler ur throws are legit no matter who you grab. But, that ain't the question. BJJ guys have no intention on standing with Judoka or anyone for that matter. Their goal is to go to the ground. So, once you lock up with them and they sit, you just entered their world. They'll slap on those Dela Riva hooks and whatever and take u to the mat and it's over. Just look into some of the freestyle Judo tournaments.look at who wins them BJJ guys. They will not let you play Judo with them. The fact that Judo (nowadays) is just taichiwaza makes Judo inferior to BJJ. There is a video of a gentlemen who runs the Kosen Judo team at one of Japans Universities. He knew Kimura Sensei. At University Kimura his first yr could not win in Judo bc of Newaza. Everyone knew his tachiwaza power so they went with newaza and beat him. His second yr he learned Newaza and the rest is history. Do you see what I'm trying to say?

John, sport of bjj and sport of judo are two different games. judo is better for sport of judo bjj is better for sport of bjj are you saying that judo tournamebt can be easily won by average bjj guy that does not have experience in judo? bare in mind that once players land on the ground in judo you have very limited time to progress newaza and If you stall for split second game gets restarted standing up. training judo newaza in preparation to judo tournament is very different then training bjj at bjj class. it is far more explosive due to time limitations, and you are dealing with different situations- mainly with people turtling up in order to stall the game so it gets lifted. bjj defences and escapes don't work in judo that well again due to time limitations - for instance if you land in a judokas pin and you just want to relax and wait for right moment to escape you have just lost. so instead you need explosive judo escape that is tailored for this particular situation. the below is generalisation but this is how I see it: judoka wins judo tournament 9/10 times bjj guy wins bjj tournament 9/10 times wrestler wins wrestling tournament 9/10 times. now if we compare what is more useful for self defence I would go with judo due to judokas being used to explosive energy more often then at bjj class but also due to being trained in maintaining balance with other trained opponents that are trying to throw you. then once it lands on the ground it is not all that comfortable or even advised to play guards - that does not really mean that you are safe from strikes. bjj guys in general have awful takedowns/throws and I would like to see how would they in self defence situation just sit on their arse on the concrete just to avoid being thrown. bjj as it was practiced by Gracies yes but bjj as it is practiced now does not reach students proper takedown or throws therefore huge part of the art is crippled. bjj is good and useful judo is good and useful boxing is great and useful and it's best to combine them all each of the above on its own is just different game. what I'm trying to say is that to bring the fight to your world and impose your game you need to bring it to the ground and since it does not seem to be a good idea for you to just sit on your ass in self defence situation so you better get very good at takedowns and or throws In order to bring the fight to where you want it to be- to the ground. of course in bjj tournament bjj guy will win 9out 10 times due to point system, rule set longer rounds etc. this is what bjj is focused on- taking your time and slowly gaining more control to in the end submit the opponent but in judo tournament even if bjj player would bring it to the ground he wouldn't have that time and even in newaza judoka would have adventage as he would have rehearsed thousands of times explosive newaza transitions to submission

@@frederickmorton275 "are you saying that judo tournamebt can be easily won by average bjj guy that does not have experience in judo?" No, I am not saying that at all. what I am saying is forget the "rule sets" if you took a BJJ black belt and a Judo Black Belt and said ok roll. The BJJ guy would win 8/10 times. And, that's being modest. I don't know where the myth came from that BJJ isn't explosive and has no take downs. It's completely false. The Gracies ( and, I don't like them) went around and challenged everybody. And, they beat them and they beat them using Newaza. BJJ has a sport application and a street application the street application I can assure you does not involve butt scooting. BJJ has a simple approach to self defense. 1) take em to the ground. (Neutralize the persons ability to use explosive kinetic energy) 2)get passed the attackers legs once on the ground because legs are dangerous. 3) maneuver through a hierarchy of pins and transitions which limit their ability to strike you and increase ur ability to strike them 4) submit or restrain them as necessary I don't wanna keep having this debate this has already been debated which is more effective in real life and BJJ has already shown the world its capability that's why that is everyones go to for police, security and the military. And, that is why BJJ is becoming one of the worlds most popular MAs and combat sport. We can argue till we are blue in the face. The fact is Judo really fucked itself with all the banning and constraints its put on itself for the sake of being an olympic sport. I wanna see Judo go back to being old school I want Judo to embrace its roots. Kodokan Judo needs to adopt the Kosen Judo curriculum

@@Midnitedreary88 let me rephrase it: bjj does have takedowns and throws but in majority of clubs those are not practised too often with resisting opponents. I have trained bjj in one of the clubs that claimed to be self defence orientated again self defence aspects of bjj were practiced but self defence techniques were not trained with truly resisting opponent for simple reason that there wasn't enough time for this so bjj ground techniques were the only once that were truly practiced in depth. what Gracie showed back in the day was grappling/bjj that was practiced against strikers, kickboxers, wrestlers , novadays that's not the case. majority of bjj practitioners myself Inuding are very mediocre at takedown and throws. now when you say let's take all the rules aside but keep the mats for now and what do we get? something close to MMA (I know there are rules in MMA that one could say are a bit disadvantagous to grapplers but still) where Good striker like Israel adrsanya can learn solid takedown defence etc and dominate the game. now take all the rules aside and take mats away and add strikes and this dominance of bjj is at question. judo player in this instance is likely to stay on his feet bjj guy might not be that keen to lay down on concrete as not only it is hard but also he may get kicked into the face or lunched- remember guard is not that safe as it is with bjj rules- no strikes etc. judo is likely to be quite a bit better for self defence. Gracies displayer bjj that was pressure tested agains variety of attackers that made their defence and takedown well rounded. majority of modern bjj practitioners Including myself are one dimensional fighters.

Seeing some BJJ people mocking judo is like people who doesn’t know their origins, because Mitsuyo Maeda was a JUDOKA. I liked the comparison presented here because martial arts have 3 aspects that must be considered separately.Personally I think that BJJ became too competitive and , according to “Reylson Gracie”, became a “mutilated art”. I also agree, though a little suspicious as a judoka, that judo is SUPERIOR in a self-defense setting because NOBODY starts a fight while sitting. Also, I don’t see a fight continue after a judoka throws someone on the street.Anyway, it makes no sense comparing two martialr arts that have the same origin and developed in different ways and use different rules. However, if a BJJ and a judo guy compete using JUDO RULES, BJJ people are lost. When it’s the other way around there are some judo guys with a nice newaza work. In other words, practice the martial art you love and leave other people alone! Lol

You mentioned the martial art aspect, the self defense aspect and the sport aspect of both styles, but remember that BJJ started in Brazil as a show business when Madea (using the Count Koma name) fought for money. The Gracies continued and fine tuned the sport for that purpose. Therefore, the idea of being superior on a mat is distorted by the idea of the show business. Of course, if you practice throwing your partners hard on concrete (as you do in Judo, wrestling, and sambo, etc.1) you will run out of partners pretty soon, so the mat is necessary for practice. But granted. BJJ, is awesome for the show business. And BTW, I love BJJ. Much easier on the knees. :-)

I heard the same excuse that judo people does not work against trained people or in another way a throw can never pulled off as people cannot spin into them fast enough. In other words they are giving their back to them. Its the same old myths time after time. Judo do train against other trained people, its has resistance fight called randoori. All judokas in class has to fight other judokas, they have to fight them in competitions and for gradings etc. If you say different to bjj people you will get offered out to a fight. I kid you not thats how insecure they are. The OP in the video is correct, there are different rules for for different arts, judo is mainly standing up with some ground fighting. It has a lot of holds, locks and and stangles which are part of bjj. The easy of judo fighting on the ground is just that an ease. You cannot get choice paralyse, that is a bad think if you too many techniques to choice from. It is not good in training or on the street. As side not i came across a old karate book from the 70s it had ground fighting as part of it as well. Not surprising reallly as karate was originally a grappling art. You see this in the katas they have look at Wanshu for example. It has a lot of grabbings and throwing, i can see because of my judo back ground. The kata out of context looks nothing but when in it is a nasty kata with lots of hard techniques to teach. Also a lot of karate kata do not have any of the fancy kicks in them, mostly its just the front kick and that is aimed low. There is one kata with a low side kick as well.

@@gladiumcaeli I watched the fight you are referring too. I like Shields and I actually like watching boxing over the UFC. But, that's a whole other story. That scenario though is a real fight we are talking strictly grappling. There are many more factors that come into play in mma. We all watched Khabib reduce 5th degree blacks belts in BJJ to rubble in mma and we have watched him do it using some beautiful Judo. I train Judo 2 days a week And BJJ 1 day a week. And, when I was much younger I boxed for about 2 yrs. My favorite grappling art is Judo. It may seem I'm a BJJ fan boy but I am not. But, given the current curriculum in Judo it has fallen drastically behind BJJ. The lack of newaza in Judo makes it inferior to BJJ. We can argue a solid Judo throw ends a fights and look when I roll I roll as a Judoka I only find myself pulling guard when someone is way stronger than me otherwise I prefer the top game. I am by far no technical expert but the fact is newaza vs bjj, bjj is superior. And, what frustrates me is Judo is a complete gi grappling art. And it limited itself to tachiwaza. Judo banned single/double leg take downs, countless throws, even limits the whole grip game. If you research the Kosen Judo players they still hold on to the old school Judo and they are great grapplers. Also, search up Ryan Vargas he will be competing in the Judo Olympics he is also an elite brown belt in BJJ listen to watch he has to say. Down in Florida is working on freestyle Judo which allows for no gi and continued newaza. I'll send you Ryan's video. I'll also send u a video of a Kosen Judo coach who knew Kimura sensei and how Kimura couldn't win a Judo match in college bc of the kosen ruleset for newaza. He HAD to master newaza and good thing he did can u imagine the state Judo would have been. In if Gracie choked him out? I have honest conversations with the bjj guys at my gym they don't think much of Judo newaza or Judo and they mean it respectfully. To them they'd rather learn wrestling bc it compliments their bjj much better. Maybe one day I'll post my own videos and show step by step have the bjj way makes more sense.

Bjj doesn’t necessarily ‘come from’ judo, more so they’re the same martial art with their own specialty. Both are pretty much just the modern, evolved incarnations of Japanese Jūjutsu’s ne waza and nage waza. And bjj’s submissions were modified by the Gracie’s, for example there weren’t many subs from the guard and stuff like the buggy choke didn’t exist and is a bjj invention, furthermore there’s plenty of evidence backing the claim that was of bjj’s leg locks actually come from Mitsuyo Maeda’s study and competing in catch wrestling
