The loading times are not a problem at all in the GoG version. They’re barely existent. It drastically improves the game, to the point that I’d consider Blood Omen to have the best gameplay in the LoK series.

The Original Blood Omen, as a total package, is a timeless classic. Soul Reaver is also ground breaking, but due to the technical constraints of the time, it’s not going to age as well or feel quite as epic, but what it delivers on the narrative front, as a specific story arc, is pure gold.

When you look at it, all the series fundation are already set in this game. Amy Hennig did blew the narrative to the next level when making SR1-2 and Defiance. But Denis Dyack work did was ambitious and groundbreaking. Fully voiced acted and an ambitious narrative and mature story, 2 years before MGS.

Metal gear solid probably gets the recognition because it has the well directed cutscenes to go with the writing and voice acting. It was also just a more mainstream game in general

Blood omen is low key the greatest vampire game I’ve ever played. Creeping around the slums and canals, fighting vampire bosses and acquiring their powers. So underrated, glad to see this video

Somehow, the voice acting genuinely improves the graphics - it doesn't look that bad anyway but it does feel more sophisticated once Tony Jay's voice is attached to them, I wish they weren't muffled during the gameplay though

I actually slightly prefer Blood Omen over Soul Reaver. Soul Reaver is kinda hampered by being incomplete, but is still pretty good. But there's just more in Blood Omen to do and I prefer the combat in BO over SR.

I've always described this game to people as Zelda for grown ups It is a clunker to play now but the fantasy lore is still dripping with sweet red blood

@@Vakantscull with the odd spin off exception it is the usual Nintendo magic - hammer the same game into the ground because they can get away with it. They're fine games but not the darling pedestals that people suggest.

12:49 I missed the Disguise power because I didn't realise you could enter the place where it was. I spent AGES trying to fight my way through that town, and then checked a walkthrough and I was like "Oh, Ok".

I have to argue with your judgement of the combat. Despite it being bit outdated, the use of items and gear is excellently balanced. The game has so many great weapons, armours and spells that, *because* they are situational, remain useful throughout the game depending on the situation and your style of playing. Sticking to one spell or set of gear only makes the game harder and slower. The world and exploration is also done better than many modern open-world games IMO. there's little wasted space and tons of secrets and lore to uncover. This is still a great game and well worth picking up but like most things, it's superior on PC where the loading times were never an issue. I'd even say it holds up better than Soul Reaver's early 3D limitations.

The axes are all but useless. I see you using the flesh armour with the flamed sword witch gives no use as it burnes enemies. But the axes when spinning just spill blood that the armour auto absorbs, so no melee enemies can touch you while you heal constantly.

The axes+flesh armour are fantastic when you want to fill your blood up quickly. Pop into any town or bandit camp and start spinning.

Well, getting your hands on the original PC release and installing some patch called KainGL (Don't know if it works with GoG version.) remove some of the annoyances. Faster load times, cutscenes and framerate on par with the PS1 version (They were worse on PC) and the option for a fixed camera is like me youre getting sick with the camera constantly bobbing around every time you change direction. I did not finish it yet, still got a way to go but it does feel like the optimal way to enjoy this nowadays. Even thought it dosen't entirely save it from feeling dated.

The first blood omen definitely holds up the most gameplay wise. Later games games have greater cinematic sceans, but the zelda esc gameplay styles makes this game alot more engaging to play over time.

For anyone that wants to play the game here is a rather important advice. Play the PC version. Blood Omen's combat's only real depth comes from experimenting with what weapon, armor and magic are well suited for a situation. But the long load times for the menu on the PS1 version make actually changing these things a pain. The PC version however has assuming you don't use an ancient hard-drive really fast load times making it far more viable for example to switch to the maze against Human enemies as they can with 2 hits bring every human enemy into a tumble state at which you can insta kill them with blood drinking.

I'll just pipe in and say even with an ancient hard drive the load times on PC are barely there. Until recently I used to play this game on my mom's 20 year-old win98 laptop.

holy moly that loading screen got me angry and I am not the one playing this game lol, none biting vampires well that is new to me lol what is the sharp teeth for then must be a fashion statement, got to love the voice acting in this, okay you know what some of these weapons are kinda worth the loading screen, as always my friend great video and can't wait until the next one

soul reaver isn't even on the level of blood omen if you ask me. don't get me wrong sould reaver was a good game but i wanted to play more as kain in the sequel not as raziel. i was not a fan of raziel at all and i felt like blood omen was better. however i would love to see blood omen and the soul reaver games get an updated remaster.

As someone going through Blood Omen in preparation for the Soul Reaver 1 & 2 collection in December: Short answer: Yes. Long answer: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. Don't let the fact that the game is a Zelda-inspired 2D affair in contrast to its sequels' Tomb Raider-influenced 3D action scare you away, person reading this: It really is a damn strong start to one of the most beloved cult franchises of all time and one of the best vampire games of all time, right up there with BloodRayne and the first two Vampire: The Masquerade games (Redemption and Bloodlines). Denis Dyack might have been a real dirtbag behind the scenes, but he, Silicon Knights and Crystal Dynamics crafted one of the must-play games of 1996 with this one. And Soul Reaver is honestly one of the best sequels of all time now that I have context for it.
