A few people have commented that they don't think BMTH are metal. For those people I have the following question: What is metal to you and why does BMTH not fulfill that criteria in your opinion? For a genre that prides itself on being welcoming, I would love to hear an actual explanation for the gatekeeping here. Genuinely curious!

I don't think metal as a genre has particular pride in inclusivity. That's a silly generalization. The problem with bmth is they're just kind of lame sellouts. I feel this way because their oldest material was more up my alley.

BMTH and other modern rock bands is putting in an evolution for the genre to make it survive, but many metal head don't give a shit and be wondering why metal is dying

I agreeeee, and at the same time, bands like BMTH get shit on for actually drawing a crowd. I wish the metal scene was actually as open as it acts all the time.

BMTH are absolutely trend-setters. That means many times they are going to miss because they're putting out stuff that is new and risky, so some people won't like it. Nex Gen is an album that hits at exactly the right time: it's cutting edge, and dropped at exactly the right time to be influential.

so before i watch this i would just like to say that the only thing important to metal is the listeners. it dont matter what band does what, as long as there are people listening its always going to be here. i DO think BMTH and their unique style has brought a lot of new fans to explore the genre, but i do not think any band is important for metal's survival, just the listeners, whether or not they listen to old or new metal its 100% on the listeners.

metalcore/deathcore is very much on the rise with bands like Lorna Shore, Slaughter to Prevail. If the argument revolves against stagnation then it is really more of an audience issue. There is plenty of creative music out there, just refer to black metal and it's insane amount of sub-genres.

There great bands but nowhere near making metal/death core on the rise. They'll stay in their bubble.

@@ozzer2010 heavier music is by itself in it's own bubble. I have no idea what metric y'all are using to weight success.

Success can be measured in numerous ways. I think one fair way would be impact in the charts. Years ago, somehow Whitechapel landed a top 10 billboard album with Our Endless War. I am not sure any deathcore or deathmetal band is doing that. But to be also fair here: I was not talking about the heavier aspects of metal in this video. Comparing a very pop heavy band like BMTH to Lorna Shore is just silly when the topic is drawing in more people from outside the genre. Very few people are going to cite as Lorna Shore or Slaughter to Prevail as a gateway band to heavier music.

@@mammothaudioengineeringYeah, fusion genres like trap metal which got quite popular 5-6 years ago may be a way to go. Billboard though is a craaazy place with many one-offs, spotify metrics may be more reliable.

@@BMdegen Yeah, completely agree. I think just like in the 00s, when band's like Linkin Park incorporated things from outside of metal into their music, it's gonna be something like that. It just has to be done well, because fans and listeners alike can absolutely tell when it's done cheaply and without actual love for those outside genres. The craft around it is so important.

Bring Me haven't been metal since 2010. They're hard rock AT MOST and I hate how they effected the Metalcore genre back in the early 2010's.

Just curious, how do you define metal? And why does BMTH not fall into your definition of metal? No one's answered this before, so I am very curious to hear your thoughts.

@@mammothaudioengineering I think Amo and That's The Spirit were far too experimental to be considered metal. Metal can be many different things I won't lie but I think BMTH have just moved too far away from anything resembling heavy metal. Their new stuff does seem to have a return to a heavier style which is kinda cool but I just think hard/experimental rock would better define their sound
@mammothaudioengineering
@mammothaudioengineering 2 ай бұрын
@@theaussiebrit I see what you're saying, yeah. I think it would be on a song by song basis in general, but yes, those two albums are definitely more rock than anything else, only very few metal moments.

Very interesting to hear all this stuff. I personally never listened to BMTH actively. I knew couple of songs here and there (namely shadow moses for example) and I liked it very much, but never got hooked on their other albums and songs. Hearing what they've contributed to our favorite genre in all these years is very eye opening. But to answer the question, I don't think that any single band is important for the survival of the genre. For the evolution of metal, probably yes, especially after hearing all that stuff. But for the survival? I don't think so.

Imma send you some songs to check out! Not everything is for everyone, but they have some craaaazy bangers, for sure! Also, agreed. Like, maybe with the exception of what Metallica did for metal in the 90s, no band is above the genre itself.

You're rigt about the hesitance of metal heads to broaden their horizons and wanting everything to sound like Maiden or Slayer. See the pushback again bands like Ghost (who I love) because 'masked satan man doesn't scream'. I grew up with Black Sabbath, Judas and Metallica and I still love bands like Sleep Token, Ghost and BMTH that break conventions.
@mammothaudioengineering

Thank you! Yeah the pushback against Ghost is hilarious - they have songs that are easily as heavy as Black Sabbath, and noone would argue that Sabbath isn't metal. I hope more and more bands keep breaking those barriers.

Interesting. What makes you think they aren't metal? Or on the other hand - what does a band need to fulfill in your opinion to be considered metal? Do you consider Black Sabbath and Judas Priest as metal bands? If so, why not BMTH, as they are much heavier on a lot of their songs? Happy to hear your thoughts!

For being “soft” their music sounds amazing! When I heard BMTH for the first time back in 2009, I kinda hated their sound, and never really got into them. It was until 2014 that I heard the song “drown”. I was like whoa is this really BMTH?? With that song they totally got my attention. Been loving them since. I’ve Seen them once live, and their shows are amazing! You should go see them live sometime and I can assure you they will make you change your opinion. Trust me
