Is Captain Jack the Face of Boe?!

I’m going to be looking at everything from interviews with cast and crew, references made within the show and surrounding the two characters while of course providing a recap of how this question came up in the first place and who this 51st century guy and this head in a jar are if you’ve never heard of them before . I’ll use all this to answer the question if they are in fact one in the same and how it could be possible.

Tochlafane. Jack lived to the end of the universe - long enough to be turned into a Tochlafane. When the paradox machine was shut off, and the Tochlafane were shunted out of existence, Jack - being a fixed point - remained. Something about being locked in that metal ball, unable to regenerate his body caused him to be stuck in head form. Once released, his body (in its new template) tried to regrow to its normal size = Face of Boe.

That's a good theory. Others say he was decapitated and his head was put in a box along side with Dorian. Being unable to grow the rest of his body, he became just the head. Also in one of the episodes, one of he characters mentions she got the vortex manipulator off a time agent, supposedly Jack.

Cool theory but it was actually all explained already. When the Doctor was captured by the Master. The Master suspended his regeneration and aged him to the point that he turned into a small creature. At the end if the episode captain Jack asked the Doctor I can't die but I seen a grey hair (basically saying he is still aging just really slowly) with his ability to die from old age suspended if the doctor can take a form of a small creature then eventually Jack can turn into the face of boa

What if Jack did get decapitated by the Headless Monks, but a quirk of what makes them worked causes two Jack's? One where the head continues to live in a box ala Futurama and mutates into Boe. One where the Headless Jack dies and grows a new head. So he is and isn't the Face of Boe.

Loads of theories going around about how he becomes a “head” but for all we know he just kept aging and as his limbs and torso grew old and fragile they just disintegrated or fell off but he can’t die so it’s just his head left and then medical science created a way to keep him comfortable and as time went on the people who knew the real reason for him being in a “jar” have passed and rumours spread that he’s the last of some great big head race

Yes, the reason he cannot die is that he is a fixed point in time, he has to live until he tells a specific doctor he is not alone in the universe at a specific time, Jack isn't aware of this and simply believes he's just immortal because Rose brought him back when desperately wanting to find the doctor so he does fight and die alone.

In a recent Big Finish Story that focuses on Jack and River meeting several times at different points in their own timeline and having an on-again, off-again relationship, they did something pretty clever with the Face of Boa. The story starts off with River, shortly before her expedition to the library, attempting to visit the Face of Boa, only for her to arrive at his funeral at which point she leaves. From there it goes into the main story, showing the various encounters that Jack and River had with each other throughout their individual timelines, then it ends back at the funeral where Jack arrives looking for River only to realize he just missed her. He then leaves without bothering to find out whose funeral he was even at.

I realize I’m a bit late to this party but I just randomly came across the video and had to comment. Hopefully somebody cares enough to read it: I never really even knew there was a debate on this subject; it seemed so simple to me that I never imagined there was debate. So many of your theories really are commendable for their creativity but ultimately just... needlessly complicated. The solution to the question really doesn’t have to be that contrived. He is immortal in that his wounds or illnesses heal yes but he continues to age. After millions or billions (hell, maybe orders of magnitude beyond that even) of years getting older and older but not actually dying as one should, Jack’s body has simply decayed and morphed into the weird form of the Face. Ordinarily you’d die long before this point when your body morphs into a state that can’t sustain itself but Jack just keeps on living and existing long past the point that he’s no longer recognizable as human. Precedent was set just shortly before this reveal when the Master suspended the Doctor’s ability to die and regenerate but then rapidly aged him. The Doctor quickly became unrecognizable as well (basically turned into a Harry Potter style House Elf) and that was a much shorter amount of aging. As a time traveler, if he reaches the end of time (or close enough to it that he doesn’t mess up other stories set there) he can just go back and continue his life from another time or place as the years pass by millions at a time. He also seems to have possibly become somewhat senile and maybe lost memories of his former life. Later episodes with Ashilder (aka Me) discussed this same issue as she aged. Your idea of being beheaded by the monks is a good one and still valid; I like it. Remember that the heads continue to live and speaks etc. so he wouldn’t be resurrected with a new body, instead he’d just keep on living as a head and getting older and older so it’s perfectly valid to be a secondary factor in this massive, weird transformation. The only other issue I see is that he does indeed die when Jack is said to be “immortal”. Personally I just took it that while the TARDIS has a lot of power and Rose was incredibly strong when she did this, eventually even the energies of the TARDIS reach their limit and lose the power to sustain him any longer. Remember they do have to stop and “recharge” her once in a while, she isn’t all powerful. It is also possible that he has lived through every single possible moment in time that has ever existed and for timey-wimey reasons he can’t exist in the same time that he already occupied but since there are no more points in time left to occupy without creating a paradox and so he’s simply left to die rather than destroy all reality

There's one problem with this: Jack didn't just have a healing factor, he was a fixed point in and of himself. He became something that always existed and always will. Then again... Fixed points can be tricked, as we've seen before (eg 11 dying to the impossible astronaut), and don't seem to care how they're fulfilled (pretty sure the Doctor has stopped what should be a fixed point only to then cause it - it doesn't matter how the thing happens, only that it does), but they cannot be flaunted or the universe will correct itself (waters of mars). Jack was a fixed point, a fact of the universe, but if has already existed constantly through the end of the universe and then time traveled back... Maybe it's possible. So I'd like to propose an amendment to this theory. Firstly, he eventually visited every point in time from the dawn of the universe to its end. This satisfies the fixed point, allowing him to die as the FoB. Secondly, her needs to become the head. I like the idea another commenter raised of him becoming a troglophane - one of those drones used by the Master. This doesn't break the fixed point because he's still alive. He survived the paradox that deleted the rest because he was a fixed point, a fact that must never not exist, though this does bring an assumption: he had not yet existed in the universe when that paradox was resolved; in fact, there are probably several points at which Jack had not yet existed. Since the Master must clearly have altered the humans' biology and physiology to make then even able to survive as troglophanes, Jack's new body can have any kind of biology, really - so we can assume it could grow to the size that we see on New Earth. Now, Jack is the FoB as we see it in gridlock. He either goes on more adventures through time or just keeps living through it linearly for millennia. At some point before Gridlock, the fixed point is satisfied; he always exists, always did, and always will. It's here that his body starts to degrade and he needs the life support, which he then fully expends in gridlock. (Edits for typos)

Jack grew up on the Boeshane Peninsula, a tiny place, and his people were so proud of him becoming a Time Agent that they called him "The Face of Boe". Strikes me that it might have been nothing more than a nickname, The Face of Boe(shane), that made a joking reference to the (actual) Face of Boe, without meaning that Jack _was_ the (actual) Face of Boe. It's a bit like someone from the English town of Godmanchester doing well and earning the tongue-in-cheek nickname "The Face of God" - a man from an ordinary place who became a local poster-boy and celebrity... but obviously _not_ God :)

Here's another way that it could have come about. Let's say that Jack can indeed recover from being blown apart as he has on several occasions. Okay, so he can reform from bits and pieces, great. What about the other bits that never got gathered? What if, going along with the idea of the nano-bots, he does indeed get blown apart but those other pieces don't get put back together with him? His genetics are slightly different since he's from the future, so what if those minor differences in his genes allowed for his bits and pieces to be compatible with other bits and pieces that the bots might find lying around? What I'm saying is, what if Jack Harkness AND The Face of Boe are both TECHNICALLY one and the same person? One is just Jack having reformed from nothing and the other is Jack being put together with other, more alien parts? And since the Time Vortex made him a fixed point in time, who's to say that those other bits and pieces couldn't be pulled through time to find other compatible parts, placing him who knows where in the past or future? So is Jack The Face of Boe? Yes. But is JACK The Face of Boe? No. Wibbly Wobbly.

my theory on how Jack is FoB even though he was immortal but FoB could die is that The Doctor wasn't exactly 100 % correct about Rose/ Bad Wolf. I Believe that it wasn't that Rose/Bad Wolf didn't know how to stop, but being able to see through all of time she knew exactly when to stop and just make Jack immortal till he becomes the Fob.

To counter, the Doctor does reset the universe completely in the end of the Pandorica arc. Resetting the timeline, who knows, could mean that the timeline he was fixed in no longer exists, allowing him to die at the point that his "FoB" physiology would allow in this reset timeline.

Well, let's see. The Face of Boe is Jack from the previous incarnation of the universe (ya know, before the reset), which would mean there are 2 Jacks in that timeline. Therefore we can reach the conclusion that FOB was a fixed point in the previous universe, and Jack is the one for the current incarnation. Much like the Highlander, there can be only one. So, even though the Face of Boe died, the point is still fixed.

When the monks steal heads the head doesn't ever actually die, this could explain why his regeneration wasn't triggered. Just as a possibility. Also, about Face of Boe having a baby, your nanobots theory supports that too, if all the bot knows is a form which can give birth, then it makes sense if Jack was healed into an organism that can give birth too.

Why is this still a question in 2020? The show already confirmed they're the same character when Jack quite literally tells the Doctor that the Face of Boe was his nick name. This was a big reveal moment in the show that confirms the two characters are one in the same and some how people missed this reveal and are still asking this question years later?

Alternate theory, Jack Harkness is just a massive troll who used to travel through time enough to have heard all about the Face of Boe. Hell, if the Face of Boe is old enough he could have been (and almost definitely was) around by the 51st century, which would mean Jack would have learned about the guy from history or current events or both in school. The YANA thing was something the Face of Boe knew for its own reasons, maybe even part of a sort of 'last laugh' as the Face went along with Jack's mad scheme to convince the Doctor that his status as a Fixed Point in Time is more flexible than originally estimated. The Face of Boe was certainly spry and mischievous enough in the cat hospital that I could believe he went out with a giggle rather than the dignified enigmatic gravitas we're supposed to believe he exudes.

everything points towards him being face of boe besides one thing if jack is a fixed point that means it is absolutely impossible for him to die no matter what and the face of boe dies so either the face of boe is jack and boe didnt really die and was just really drained of his energy or jack is not boe and its just a coincidence that he was called face of boe

Please be aware that when we avoid the terms "bisexual" and "bi", it contributes to bi erasure. Jack was not "The Face of Boh". He was "The Face of Boe". Just because they sound similar doesn't mean they're the same thing. Also, Jack, who is a notorious trickster, of course knew about The Face of Boh and just thought it would be something to mess with The Doctor. The whole story about being "the first from the area to be recruited" was an obvious setup for a joke, it was laying the groundwork for a punchline.

I'm thinking maybe they took Jacks head when he was blown apart putting it in a jar etc and the head alone evolving into the face of Boe. , and in that torchwood episode his head was taken ( Boe) and the body with the stolen head re assembled into captain Jack again. I hope that made sense. lol
