"Khao Soi" is not Burmese food but from Chinese Muslim from Yunnan State. You can notice that there's no pork meat in it (chicken or beef). It was clear soup until Thai put coconut milk and added local herbal with it. Along with chili paste, lime, shallot and pickled Chinese mustard as side dish. FYI & Bon Appétit.

Thanks for this awesome explanation. It really is delicious and I love the Thai slant on the flavour. We'll keep coming back for more. 😋

@@GipsyDean It's fusion food by replacing Braised pork in it. To be honest with you, the taste of that meat will destroy original flavor of Khao Soi itself.

The internet in Thailand is very fast, possibly among the fastest globally, due to the extensive cable, as you might have seen in that video clip. Currently, the government is planning to put everything underground as it seems quite messy above ground. Therefore, if you visit Chiang Mai now, you might see road excavations within the city, and some roads may not be smooth. We apologize for any inconvenience caused
@FrugalTravellers Жыл бұрын

In fact, Khao Soy's origin came from Muslim Yunnan immigrants who migrated to Thailand and Burma. So both countries have something similar. One might note that Khao Soy does not come with pork but chicken or beef because Muslim don't eat pork. BTW, there are a few shops selling khao soy in Bangkok.
@hom_di Жыл бұрын
This is the traditional tale - but I'd argue that the truth is that no one knows, it's possible to get khao soi muu, even additional variants exist such as khao soi ka muu (pork leg khao soi) and khao soi luk chin muu (khao soi with pork meatballs) though I grant you that beef and chicken are most prevalent. Look at Burmese 'o no kha swe", one could easily argue, as many do, that this is the origin of khao soi in Thailand via the Shan peoples (Shan supposedly being a misrepresentation of the word ' Siam'), but it's more complex than that - the movement of people and the basis of a dish are often-times not as black and white as we would like. Khao soi is an amalgamation of ingredients, people and tastes condensed now into supposedly a single dish. As a long time 'brapet neua' resident I would argue that there are multiple interpretations of khao soi across the north of Thailand itself, go to Lampang and the khao soi will be different to that which you get in CM, even within CM the range is staggering

The messy tangling black lines usually mistaken by most people as power lines are communication lines, some are currently in used and some are not, but all are difficult to remove by the responsible communication companies. So, they're usually just left up there, and hence the mess. The power lines are up above on a higher level.

Khao Soi is not a dish that originated from Myanmar, but its roots can be traced back to Muslim Chinese origins. When it was introduced to the northern region of Thailand, it underwent significant adjustments and improvements. Coconut milk was added, resulting in the delicious Khao Soi that is distinctively different from its original version. Therefore, you won't find the exact same Khao Soi elsewhere. You should try Khao Soi from nearby restaurants as each place offers a different taste."

I wonder whether Khao Soy is quite similar to Lak Sa dish in Malaysia.
@FrugalTravellers Жыл бұрын
That's a great question! I absolutely love Singapore laksa, as opposed to Penang laksa, but the main similarity to Khao Soi is the coconut milk. To me, Khao Soi is a smaller dish, with more of a curry flavour than laksa, and with fewer additional bits. I call laksa a party in a bowl 😀😁 ~ Mandy

The sad truth about Thailand is their quite costly financial requirements in order to get those low prices or visa runs which can also be expensive & the government is changing it constantly it seems. It appears they don't really want you there for a long time ? Huge disadvantage for many expats ! > Cambodia is a lot more visa friendly cheap and easy - it's just incredible !!!
