Is China really MODERN or stuck in the DARK AGES?

Why is it that I can turn a corner in China and feel as if I've travelled hundreds of years back in time? Yet turning another corner it's like I've travelled into the future? China has a rather unique dichotomy in which the past literally co-exists alongside the present! But which is it? Is China really modern or is it stuck in the Dark Ages with a modern facade? Come find out...

I'd like to add to Winston's observations by telling his audience that even if the infrastructure changes dramatically from Victorian or even Medieval to 21st century at the turn of a corner, unfortunately the behaviour of most of the occupants i still very definitely from a bygone age. And I'll give you an example of something which happens DAILY right in front of my eyes. I live in Foshan which is between Shenzhen and Guangzhou....quite a modern city with it's share of super designed high-rise buildings right next to labyrinths of old buildings where the 'real' people live. There's a young family who have 2 adjacent shops almost directly opposite my friend's coffee shop and bar. The husband has just sold his Toyota sports car and bought a Range Rover Evoque. His wife who runs the 2 shops always nicely dressed. On the outside a typical 'modern' local family. Come 5.30 in the afternoon the father arrives back at the shop and meets up with his wife, their 2 young daughters and the grandparents (who've probably been babysitting all day). Keep in mind this is a BUSY side street 30 seconds walk from a Marriott hotel, huge shopping mall and new high-rise apartment blocks! First thing that happens......the mum makes BOTH daughters (around 5 and 7 years old) take down their panties and URINATE into the gutter right outside the 2 shops! Next step.....then the fold-up table comes out and is placed outside in the SAME gutter (still damp from the piss), 6 or 7 small plastic stools put around it, and mum, dad, the 2 kids and the grandparents have their evening meal.....sitting in the gutter, on a busy side street, where the kids have just urinated. After dinner has finished, the husband goes off somewhere, the mum goes back into the shop, BUT the grandparents then WASH all of the cooking utensils, in cold water, IN THE GUTTER where 1000 people have walked over, and the kids have urinated! This happens almost every evening, everywhere, not just where I'm telling you about. I've even seen mums let their children urinate inside shopping malls! I've sent pictures of this back to my sister in UK numerous times and not surprisingly she responds with the usual comments of disbelief! So to answer the title of Winston's video, YES China is very modern, and YES it's still stuck in the Dark Ages!

TBHNetwork He properly talks about the fact that there is two Chinas, the old and new overlapping, but he over states saying that majority of Chinese live in that kind of slum area... 40% of Chinese are still rural, and by definition while rural people may be very poor it doesn't look at all like the video area and the 60% urban China even assuming half the cities look like the video (hint, they don't, because the video area is old China style ~1960-1990 and most cities grow in the latest 20 years) it would mean 30% of people, not the majority as he claims.

Hi Winston. Good video that is honest. My parents in China live in a rural village. My mother in laws house is build from wood. Old style chinese building. But, I will never forget that my mother in law, despite not being the most wealthy person, being the most generous and kind (By the way, she is 77 and still she gives her best at that age). Every time we visit, she gives her room to me and my wife. She gives her best. Do we see that kind of behaviour in the west anymore? No! Most of her children is rich and looks well after her, but she choose to live in the old house. Maybe it reminds her of the wonderful times she had there with her husband and family. Just opposite her house, her son have build a 5 story house that is modern with all the western standards that we appreciate. But she still choose to live in her house and home. Yes, China can be poor and yes China can be extraordinary rich. You get some very ignorant propagandist peole here in the comments that only want to see the world through their perspective of what they believe to be the truth. That won`t change. There is good people and bad people in each country and nationality. That will also not change. Good video, liked this one.

Do life You contradict yourself here. You say, "Do we see that kind of behavior in the west anymore? No!" Yet, later you say: "There is good people and bad people in each country." So you're just doing what you're criticizing Westerners in China for doing. What a hypocrite you are. And the way you unknowingly contradict yourself here shows what a typical product of China's bad education system you are----that is, you have poor analytical and critical thinking skills. And thankfully, there are humble, gracious old ladies in every country of the world----keep that in mind.
@dolife8048
@dolife8048 6 жыл бұрын
@ It annoys me, "poor analytical and critical thinking skills." First, I`m not Chinese, I`m a South African. Shows you how much you analyse and think critically. Nice!! Show me in the "Western World" where westerners still have this habits. The Western World and most of its people, only think about themselves and how can they benefit by anything they do for others. There is no more brotherly love. That’s why I state "There is good people and bad people in each country." Because of your critical thinking and analytical skills, not a 100% of people is the same, you still find a small minority of people who are different, so yes, you still get good and bad people in each society and nationality no matter in which country you find yourself in. Anything can be ripped out of context to justify your believe system. That’s why I stated: “You get some very ignorant propagandist people here in the comments that only want to see the world through their perspective of what they believe to be the truth. That won`t change." Case in hand about you. Shame, you can`t even look at my profile picture and clearly see I`m white, far removed from the Chinese gene pool. And no, I did not make a mistake when I called her mother my parents even though technically she is my "Mother in Law". But you are very analytical alright, and your critical thinking skills is first class hey!! Congrats man! You are truly a skilful sample of high intelligence!

You're right Winston. China is somewhat modern yet still has its ancient heritage and legacy of old things around. There's just too much of everything in China: people, land, views, varied quality of life, buildings, villages, customs, traditions, etc. When my ship docked in Shanghai 1960 everyone on the streets was dressed in blue dungarees with several patches. That's all changed now to bright vivid colour clothes I see. I visited the famous Shanghai Club and enjoyed Shanghai Beer (sweet, yet kicks like a mule.) There's just too much of everything there. One can hardly get bored. Stay healthy. (not Awesome)[Awesome is a size]. I'm 76, b.1942. Been to Durban South Africa too. Many thanks.

I used to look upon those buildings when I was standing on the top of the skyscrapers or on Google Map, and wondering what they were and who lived there. In fact, I didn't even know how to get into there alleys because they were completely blocked if you just walked on the main roads. BTW, I had been to one of these places once and found the food there was incredibly good and cheap. I recommend you to try them. If you do not care too much about the hygiene.

I pretended because I do not want to imagine if I ended up like this places. Everyone knows the movie Slumdog Millionaire, don't we? Seeing in the film is easy for the audience but imagine yourself living in the places is otherwise. To be honest, I am afraid to think I would live in those places. I know the quality of overall health has been "dramatically" improved, but on the outside, you still see them much look like slums than any other things. In my imagination, those places represent indifference to human dignity. Maybe the views of skyscrapers and fancy cars give me the false belief that my own dignity is really respected.

Come on, you think people living in there are poor? For the village he showed in this video which is in Shenzhen, any of the small house worth more than 15 millions USD, and the value is still increasing everyday. You think you have decent job, right? Did you calculate much you can make all your life?

Majority of China are like that poor area ? Excuse me? I come from northern west China , and my city is tier 4 city (which means it's like just a tiny city in USA ) I can hardly find those poor area in my city , not to metion other bigger cities , like the one you live right now. This is 2017 not 1997. There's a reason that kind of area still exists, either historical reason or the government still trying discuss about compensation for demolition with ppl who lives there .

Good vid man. I notice a lot of people are mis-quoting or misunderstanding what you said. This situation exists in virtually every country in the world to some extent. There is a massive difference between North England and the far richer London and the south. Small farmers globally are poorer than their city cousins. I have seen the same in Thailand and in Sicily, its a fact of life.

Shane Young jeez man dont get so offended. He's not speaking ill of China for having areas like those. He's saying that is what gives China it's charm. I personally want to see those places when I go there. Thats what people romanticize about when they think of authentic China. Be proud of those areas. Its not something to be ashamed of. If anything its shameful how much of them have been destroyed without hesitation all in the name of short term profit. Those neighbourhoods are pieces of history and culture.

Same. Not sure about the exact number. But 40%-70% depending on the region is probably true? Just my guesstimate. And Winston mentions that he likes them which I just shake my head. Ya visit, maybe, live there? No way. People who live there want to earn more money and move out. Edit: After some thought. I realized that I do the same thing. One of my better experiences was visiting Gary while I studied in US. Gary is ranked the worst city to visit in America, yet I loved it a lot.
