The fact is he tests jokes out on his audience and, if a joke doesn't get a laugh, it gets re written and, if it still doesn't, it's dumped. I like Jimmy a lot and he's not just lightening fast in his wit but incredibly intelligent and thoughtful when it comes to explaining his process but I do also think his progressive views over the years have certainly clouded some of his opinions. I know Francis had an awkward moment in this talk on the issue of joking about Islam and I think it illustrates exactly why its a problem, there is an inherent fear on even discussing the topic without some kind of defensive pushback or fear of being branded as racist (even though a religion isn't a race but the two always get conflated) but I noticed Jimmy in kind of in the same style as a politician doesn't want to expand on it and just thinks because he made one joke which is "I don't want to joke about it because I don't want to be killed" is the heart of the issue... when did it become normalised and accepted in a country to NOT be able to joke about something out of fear that it will result in violence? That very notion is already an acknowledgment and an acceptance that we do not live in a free speaking country where anything can be joked about and its also an acknowledgment that what was once a Christian majority country has now become a minority who must adhere to the "religion of peace" .... or else.

The punching down thing, though (as they see it) is punching down on people and where they fit in the hierarchy. The categorisation they've made is not based on being 'better', it's based on their levels of oppression. That's how they categorise people. So although on first listen the point Jimmy makes about turning the argument around sounds powerful. It's based on a false assumption, so any woke person can bat that away while laughing at his ignorance.

The reason Jimmy is right is that the woke folks don´t justify their right to categorize others, to decide the definitions and to define the hierarchy from having the privilege of being on the top of the hierarchy of oppressors themselves. They justify it by claiming to be better (morally superior), which is exactly why they will punch down on people they regard as oppressed and underprivileged whenever such people disagree with them.

Maybe comedians in the UK are not self censoring but in the US, lots of comedians are self censoring. We have a big joke occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., but SNL, late night shows and many comedy routines are not making fun of that joker.

I thought this was a great hour and a half - and Jimmy came over well. Seem to be some pretty uncharitable takes in here. Sure, Jimmy is big enough not to be touched by some of the concerns of aspiring comedians - but he has been through a fair degree of shit over the years, and bounced back admirably. I did feel that the Hannah Gadsby and Pish Kumar references, felt overly charitable though - but that apart, good stuff.

I think there was a bit of gaslighting going on there. I didn't agree with his comment on disability and hierachy. A disability puts you at a disadvantage. It's not about viewing that person as beneath you. I'm not saying jokes should be verboten, more that he sounded like he wanted to pretend we're all the same, when we're not. Written this elsewhere, but I'll say it again. I hate the whole offended culture. Its such lazy language not to mention that it suggests and requires the "offending" party's opinion or statement is somehow lesser than the offendees, let alone expect them to placate you. In some cases it can be true, but most of the time people are angry, upset and often rightly so. But expressing anger or sadness is not the same as expecting the other person to change just for you. I find "the offended" baffling.

I was married to a Narcissist for an awful long time. He could be “offended” if I disagreed with his point of view, or said something he thought was a personal attack on him, or remarked that it was a lovely sunny day… The rage meltdowns were always illogical and truly something to behold. I know it seems baffling - it did to me for the longest time - but boils down tactics of entitlement and control.
