What is your highest and lowest score of the year?
@keitho6018
@keitho6018 5 күн бұрын
70 lowest-80 highest, 4 hdcp, play 20 times a year -great topic imo...I see people from 200 yards as a as a 10 hdcp hit it 15 yards short a d complain...the bain of golfers are expectations... Best players in the world from 200 yards are about 30 feet...so anything on or near the green is a great result for the rest of us!

MSH, the answer is 79/95! The low round felt "good" in the perspective of I didn't do anything superb but good tee shots, irons on or close to the green, don't remember but I think 1 or 2 3-putts. The high round started with 3 good holes (+1) but then the wheels fell off, couldn't put 2 shots together - good drive, "fat iron" and so on. My normal scoring is ~ 82 to 88, which I consider good for someone who only plays once a week.

I'm an older golfer, so I walk 9 holes 3 or 4 times a week. Best score this year was a 39, worst 51. On the best day, things just clicked on the worst day it was cold and windy to the point I was asking myself why I was even out there. Love this format, by the way.

I love clips like this. I don't see the other golftubers spending much time to just sit and talk to us like a friend would. And to add on to what you're saying, I think a lot of people misinterpret what consistency even IS. Just hit 10 perfect shots and you have left/right, front/back dispersion (and probably an outlier somewhere). Just 3 bad mishits can easily drop you 6 strokes in a round depending on where they land. 3 out of 50ish iron swings is pretty darn consistent. Thanks MSH, for taking the time to talk about stuff like this.

I like experimenting too much to ever get good at golf. When I relax and swing at 75% effort I score best. But it’s not as much fun as trying to out drive my playing partners that are 30 years younger, occasionally winning! Thanks once again for a great video. I have noticed what you have been saying this last season ( I only get to play 6 months because of winter for the other 6 months) consistency for me is the same swing and same routine all the time, but if I am off, exactly what you said about having a bad day, that is what I chalk it up to. For me, the important thing that I understand about golf, is to know your swing and what you do as an individual and to know your carry for your clubs and the other important thing I have learned is also strategy on the golf course. Thank you for the great advice. Ervin

Perspective is vital. Glad you mentioned it. To me it is the most powerful word there is. Things make golf vary day to day even at our best. Weather, conditions, mental and physical limitations and so on. People get hung up on a score. Just because you shot 70 or 75, 85 or 90, on the best day doesn't mean that is your range. When I coached back in the early 90s, we had each player have a range for the day. Ex. my daily range is about 76-83. Allowing for potential things we can't even control. If the course wasn't as well known, add 1-2 more. Is it a hard course slope wise? Take that into account. Some courses around my area are +5 more before I even begin. Long, uneven lies, and super fast greens type things. Sure, we can play well but just knowing the potential is there to be a little higher score. Keep up the good work. Good book option is Zen Golf. Check it out.

Love the video and appreciate you! Too many amateurs (IMO) don’t focus enough on this. Too busy on chasing distance or not leaving a birdie putt from 20’ short and then 3 putting. I use the analogy of looking at strokes like dollars. It’s a lot easier to keep them from falling out of your wallet than finding them on the course and putting them in it. Take care!

Some of your best insights yet. Your thoughts are very realistic here and people who beat themselves up should be listening to this. You mentioned Bob Rotellas book from way back when which I still have on my bookshelf. That one book is what finally got me to break 100 in the late 90's. Specifically the section on the short game and how amateurs dread it when they really need to be relishing in it and enjoying it.

Thanks for doing this topic. I'm a 17 handicapper and have a lot of variation in my scoring. Sometimes I have an idea what's going on . . . but sometimes not. My biggest game mystery is I'll hit streaks of hitting the hosel. That would be my biggest golf success right now if I could figurer out why those little horrible streaks pop up. So far my best suspect is that I let left arm bend creep in too much. It usually happens following a great ball striking streak. Keep up the great videos!

I don't like videos like this.... I love videos like this! So much wisdom in this and it's a trap I've fallen into so many times in the past. I watch a lot of content because I can and I enjoy it, when unused to have a bad round it was too easy to fall for the next golden nugget. Recently I found a drill that really helps me so when I start hitting a few odd shots I just go back to that drill. A few swings on the course or a bucket of balls at the range and I can usually get my groove back.

I managed a 1 under 35 on my 3050 yd blue-white combination 9. I'm 71, had taken 30+ years off of the game before 2023 to raise kids and work, and never did that before. Other than birdie holes 2 and 3, it certainly wasn't my best ball striking day, but it was a good relaxed golf playing day. Hit 4 greens and 4 fringes. (I should point out that that 9 probably has a course rating of 34, but I'm not about to apologize- just maybe blush a little☺.) This channel definitely had a part in the score, in terms of the approach to the game. Mostly, I just try to hit some decent shots and if the score is good, great. Otherwise, I dink around and hit extra shots if possible. I don't think I've filled out a card since the 80s.

Good video on reflection and where one's base is at. Quit being sensitive! Who cares about the haters! At times I think, we as golfers, forget we are playing against the course and less against each other. We also can lose our swing because we slip into bad habits and drifting from the fundamentals. I know when my game is off it is because I am not turning. Since I am not turning I compensate bringing in bad habits! You reference the book: The Four Foundations of Golf by Jon Sherman, in the past. It is really a great book that is also reflects on what you are discussing in this video. Weird...experiencing a glitch on YT where I type comments and I don't see them...Anyway...Hope this goes through. Here's my 2 cents on the holy grail...consistency. I think people have a WIDE range of what consistency means to them. For some it's not that they are inconsistent, it's that they don't understand, or like, how they are consistent. If I just go out 3 times per year, and hit the driving range 1 or 2 times, my shots can seem pretty random. If I put the time in (like you obviously do) the "patterns" become more obvious. Sure I have some wayward shots, but FOR THE MOST PART, my shots "group" a certain way with certain clubs. And, you play to those patterns. Then, there's the "mental" group...Totally capable of playing a great front 9, but then something happens, and the concentration wanes, and suddenly it's not all seashells and balloons. They CAN play great, but without mental focus, do not have the muscle memory to just put it on automatic, so, in their mind, become "inconsistent".

I may be misinterpreting what you are saying. I made numerous references to score throughout the video. I said all the pros I saw were at least 11 strokes variance in score. I said amateurs 10-12 strokes is normal. I also said if your score varies by 20 strokes that's too wide of a variance. Score is the only thing that matters in the end so that would be the definition of consistency.
