Is Cossacks 3 Worth It? A Comprehensive Review

Cossacks 3 is actually a HD remake, but I didn't want to focus on that in the video as this game deserves to be judge on it's own merits, a solid 2016 RTS game. Are you a regular player of Cossacks 3? Are you considering purchasing it? I've had a blast slamming thousands of troops together in epic formations and blasting everything to smitherines with a tonne of cannons. Can't believe it took me this long to play it!

I absolutely adore this game. The campaigns are trash but the skirmish mode battles are so good. Feels like a real war.

I don't think any other game hits the same scale for me. Supreme Commander is obviously a very big game, but where the battles are a combination of ranged and melee weapons with artillery and cavalry too, it's such an epic combination!

I played Cossacks 2 and American Conquest all the time growing up. They were in a RTS box from Menards of all places. Blew me away how many units were on screen. I've been playing Cossacks 3 since release day. Not something that I play every day but I do enjoy going back to it.

I remember buying Sudden Strike the original and Cossacks was the demo. I put so many hours into both of them its insane.

I've only discovered both games relatively recently and I'm quite annoyed it's taken me so long. Do you have a preference between Sudden Strike and say Company of Heroes? Very different games of course but I've noticed a lot of players usually significantly prefer one over the other.

As far as I remember you can make formations with cavalry with no need of Officer or Drummer, just enough cavalry

I couldn't figure out how to do that, I was hoping you could make them use a wedge formation, that would be pretty cool. I probably just missed an obvious button.

@@twiglets2 You could only do it with certain cavalry though, as hussars types can't use formation (and I suspect you mostly used them, they are really fast after all).

Finally! Looks like an Art of War (Cossacks 1 expansion) remake, I never liked the sequel because it was a downgrade from the first game. Edit: Just read the pinned lol Cossacks 1 Art of War is prolly the best RTS ever made. Glad to see revival, Ill deffy pick this up eventually!

I find it weird to say 'if Age of Empires and Rise of Nations had a baby' because one of the selling points of Rise of Nations was it was by Brain Reynolds-one of the people behind Age of Empires in the first place.

That is actually incorrect Brian Reynolds did civ 2, alpha centuri,Gettysburg, rise of nations- his version of civ in real time- It was Bruce Shelley and Rick Goodman that did age of empires 1 and 2

The only thing I don't like, which isn't a big issue and doesn't make the game less fun or worth playing but just bothers me, is that the cannons don't have crews. It's just a cannon model, that's it. Like a ghost cannon existing on its own. It's weird to me. I know that's the typical old-school RTS approach, as the cannon is a unit. But I like it more like other games where the cannon has some kind of crew. It makes that kind of unit feel more valuable and worth saving or trying to keep alive; tiny detail that makes it more immersive. Great video btw.

I completely agree, I think in Rise of Nations for example they have a few little guys there that push the gun, load it and fire it which is far more immersive, and that game is way way older.

Great review for a beautiful game!They gave me the cd-rom of the first chapter when I was a kid and I have no idea how many hours I played in "European Wars" and then in "The Art of War". Today unfortunately I don't have a PC to play and I saw that it’s not even present on GeForce Now. I would like to emulate it on MacOS, has anyone done it via Crossover?

Cossacs 3 has problems with the latest AMD graphic drivers. If you go back to driver version 22.5.2 it should work.

There's a lot of people saying that this isn't that much of an improvement over the original, so I actually went and bought the original (as part of the bundle along with Cossacks 2, which I did play back in the day)... ... yeah no, by modern standards the original was almost unplayable. There's so many quality of life improvements, just things such as the ability to zoom is an absolute essential.

@@twiglets2 While I 'm not exactly experienced I do think the reason that a lot of actual guys who prefer originals over remasters is that they never stopped playing the originals. Thus without a gap in their playing they don't really have to deal with the issue of refamiliarization that comes with picking up an old game away after decade or more of not touching it.

as a dedicated player, i can tell that the only limit of your troops is your pc. I built armies of 30000+ troops, and at that moment my pc was melting. Also, unlike most of the games, that start really funny, but then are beginning to be slow and boring, Cossacks £ do not lose the temp of the game

I played the Original Cossacks a loooong time ago (when it was new), and I loved it. However, I will not be getting this one. I still get the impression that the unit formation control is unnecessarily cumbersome. I kinda think it would be more logical that instead of "Building" soldiers 1 by 1, you train a full company, and then this company is 1 unit you control, just like in many gunpowder historical games; make several companies easy to line up, and be relatively easy to control the large formations in glorious linebattles (Check "Ultimate General -" games for ref.). But I guess it was too rooted in classic RTS AOE mechanics.

I bought it on steam, can't start any match, can't play the campaign, random map, editor, anything...the moment it goes to load the map, screen goes black and game crashes, great experience 10/10 won't work on windows 11, my pc should be able to run it pretty easy

Yup. I played Cossacks 1 back in the day & #3 is just a remaster. Nothing wrong with that. The way I see it, it's AOE2 to AOE2 DE, the latter buffing graphics, quality of life improvement, but in essence, it's still the same game. What I didn't like was that they took away 18th cent. navy on the 3rd one. I'm still looking forward to a potential #4 & hope that it'll be different in its predecessor

@@twiglets2 Definitely! The best (but also very time consuming) would be an actual nations guide as the game itself does a poor job of explaining what nations are good at compared to other games like age of empires 2 or Rise of nations. But that's clearly a lot of work 😅

I was pleasantly surprised when playing for the first time (I had been told it wasn't that great) but I found it surprisingly refined and in many ways refreshingly unique too. RTS games seem to be receiving more attention these days so perhaps more content is possible in the future!

To do the game full justice, the graphic settings used in this video arent the maximum, but even powerful computers can struggle in the really big battles. Still good game tho, try it

@@twiglets2 it's a Risk-type map of Europe and, to conquer territories, you play a game. You don't have an eco, it's just your armies. There are some secondary objectives to give you more xp, which unlock more space in your army

Hello! I use Windows 10 myself so I'm afraid I won't be much help with the windows 11 query, perhaps someone else will spot this and reply. Though I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work on windows 11 (perhaps I'm just ignorant). The DLC's is a good question. I think it depends on what you like. For example Days of Brilliance gives you a Polish campaign with Denmark & Netherlands as new nations, if you like the sound of that, then great. Guardians of the Highlands gives you a Scottish campaign etc etc. So the DLC's seem to be decent overall, but it comes down to how bothered you are by the new nations that are involved in each one really.

I don't believe it does. I may be wrong, but my understanding is they advertised the game as working on Mac but in fact they haven't released the update to enable it to work. I don't actually use a Mac myself, but I can see other Mac users in 2022 still complaining that there is no way of playing this game on a Mac so that's what I've based my opinion on!

didnt enjoy this one everything about the games felt the same there was no variations in how everything played out it felt so scripted even the fight arent that fun because there is not that much difference between troops it all come down to numbers... the biggest turn off was that the mechanical and visual aspects of the game dont blend in at all it felt like a board game with a lot of stats to be calculated on the side... there isnt much visual variety in how your base is built and it doesnt have that personal touch

@@twiglets2 its not the visual aspects of the game the design of the building looks great ..the problem is the placement of buildings and order of the construction both dont have a big enough effect and it doesnt blend in well with the military aspect of the game ..the majority of the strategy of the player happens in the upgrade trees not on the map..a good example is a game like stronghold crusader where you have to adapt your choice and placement of building like catapuluts walls towers on the arena position elevation natural resources enemy ai lords ..ect so every game feels like a unique puzzle to solve that has many solutions by the end every game feels so unique and vaiered depending on your setup and imaginations and innovation it feels like your own creation...to sum it up when your games main focus is military you needs to make it a base builder..but what cosssacks 3 devs did is make it a shallow city builder with warfare slapped on top ..for the games i enjoy i like . dont starve .. slay the spire..and " battle brothers' way of the samurai 3 ..into the breach and chess
