Is Headquarters WW2 Worth It? A comprehensive review

Headquarters WW2 is a mixture of Panzer Corps 2 and the original company of heroes cinematic vibes. But is it right for you? TLDR - it's inoffensive but could use a bit more content to improve longevity and help it compete against other WW2 strategy games. The soundtrack is a bit bland, but boy oh boy do some of the sound effects have a bit of oomf behind them! Worth noting it works well with a controller as I mostly played the game on Steam Deck. @AytchZero Glad to hear it. I'm curious how long he plays it for as I think the one issue might be longevity. The missions don't take all that long to complete and the skirmish is a bit underwhelming. But maybe he will enjoy replaying the missions with different units

I really liked your condensed review, excellent explanation, I’m already a fan of WWII games, playing Unity of Command 2, Panzer Corps 2, I bought Headquarters World War 2 as I find Unity of Command 2 a bit too difficult for me. Thumbs up for you, well done!

Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes Offensive, the AI is quite good. Leave a gap in your lines or push and enemy will punish you, also reinforces the correct unit. No mad dash to destruction for the AI units as many of the turned based. Love The Troop, biggest knock for me is some of the AI is quite silly. The previous Decisive Campaigns had too many units for me to enjoy. Ardennes is smaller in scope; hope more are made at this scale. Great review, really enjoyed thank you.

Its a game I'll probably buy when it appears in a Steam sale. I love the similar turn based ww2 game The. Troop. I find thd AI in that game challenging and has plenty of replay value.

@francescovissicchio7452 I'd say that if you like skirmish then it offers too little at the moment. The campaigns are pretty decent overall but it would be worth waiting a while to see if they offer another discount soon, if you're not in a rush. Definitely worth picking up on sale of you enjoy ww2 strategy!

It is tactical, so you are absolutely right. IMO one of the best of its kind in years, although The Troop deserves an honorable mention.

my first impression was totally ruined by the fact that there is seemingly no AI at all. enemy units rarely move (even if caught in the open) and seem to focus fire on first or closest thing they see. scouting doesn't work at all. sometimes your scout units can't spot tank 4 squares ahead but at the same time your artillery unit sitting at the back of your front lines perfectly sees it... anyways it looks like this game was made purely for pvp experience

@@twiglets2 Yes, but it's only because some of those divisions (mostly German) still used them in 1944, but the organization of all divisions are taken only from 1944.

Those aren't the visuals. The game is not that good. You only have 7 units to fight with...always. The game is coded to NOT be random.

@lazyjanner I'm not sure if you are being serious but to me it's a shame when this happens. I see no reason for the various factions not to speak in their native tongue with subtitles. I find it less immersive when all the Germans speak with English accents.

Why does it matter that much? Like if it’s a good game, the accent of the voice acting isn’t going to make or break it. The quality of the voice acting could but he said the voice acting is surprisingly good outside of the accent of Germans. Also there are other campaigns too Idk if you’re trolling or not tbh

@@lazyjanner well it’s one thing “mattering” since it matters to me too and the majority of people who play the game I’m sure too. But does that mean I’m not willing to play it because of that? Hell no. It’s an awesome game. The legit reasons someone might not want to play it is that it crashes like 50+ times a mission in the later missions where there are tons of units and all your infantry have trucks transporting them. Until you find a workaround where it doesn’t crash if you select the units through the menu and then press escape after every command which is such a pain in the ass. Also the fact that all the armed transport vehicles in later missions won’t let you deploy troops unless you select through the menu too. Those are like legit reasons Them not being willing to go source and hire German voice actors and instead put their budget towards the gameplay, is not a good reason to not play.
