Could have gone d1 and gotten a 1/4 scholarship, probably would have sat the first year or 2. Went naia, got a full scholarship and will be able to play my first year then transfer out if I want to

Your description of student athlete life was spot on accurate! I was a D2 athlete and we had morning conditions afternoon practices, scheduled study hall and parameters for classes. Also spent most of my time with only the other athletes at the school.

yep. Years later, i found it a little sad that I had basically zero non-athlete friends from college, but it's genuinely hard to make them. A bigger conversation, but you live in your own tiny bubble for sure

Its also worth considering options north of the border. I was a walk on red shirt player at D1 and got some academic money. After the school year ended, i went to a university in Ontario Canada where I finished my degree and got my master's degree. The Canadian system also has the added advantage of the exchange rate

thanks for sharing - others will see these comments so I appreciate it. I dont know much, if anything, about attending Canadian schools so this is a good contribution.

We hear a lot about how NIL and the transfer portal has changed college football. How has it changed college baseball...if any change at all?

Thank you for such an a educational video! Our family is currently deciding on post high school university options. The tough decision for us is that our son wishes to get into engineering but is also a good ball player.

Don't play baseball it's a dead commitment your son has a great degree lined up we wasn't 23 yrs playing baseball my son made it to double A then got released now he has no job and no degree. The top athletes who start will not complete there degree in 4 yrs you can't you won't have time they need you on the field. My son was a top performer but it didn't matter the system over stocks the system and then makes massive cuts at the end of spring training and then there still releasing guys pretty much all during the season and the off season it's so sad and gutless.During his 3 yrs in the minors they ,meaning the team or the system didn't play fair and gave my son a raw deal even though he out performed the top money players now he is home and emotionally not in a good place and at 26 has to start over in life with no degree and no plan B.I have so much more to say and I'm going to put baseball on blast in the news few weeks,I can never watch another baseball game the rest of my life nor will I ever encourage any parents to let their kids play the game,I know everybody is different and has a story but it's truly not worth it in the end and now we're stuck with this mess he has no money no degree no health insurance no car and is back home.Go take a look at milb transactions and there you can see all the players that the team releases or players retired that means they gave up trying.I hope this sort of makes things clearer. God Bless!!

Ultimately, the engineering degree should come first at that point - and engineering is one of those degrees that is very hard to do - some schools will say you just can't do both - while playing a D1 school. So that should be asked up front in very clear terms with the coaching staff. I have another video scheduled for march about Club sports in college- which are a good option to stay active and involved in sports while not committing to the varsity rigor.

I'm sorry your son got released, but encouraging parents to not let their kids play baseball is absolutely the wrong message. I also had multiple injuries, got overlooked, and ultimately got released. Pro sports are brutal. But you sign up for that and give it your best. I wouldn't say I had a "Plan B" either, and I also had a terrible identity crisis leaving the game, but I put one foot after the other and have pivoted into the real world. Your son will have to do the same - and YOU will as well. Being angry at the sport and discouraging others will not help your healing. Only 0.1% of ballplayers make it to the very top, and life isn't fair. Take the positives from it and start moving forward. ✅ Also - its absolutely false that you can't finish your degree in four years just because you're a starter. That's false, false false. "Needing you on the field" has nothing to do with getting your schoolwork done.

I’m not sure what to do with my son who is 16 now, as a HS sophomore and wants to make the baseball team. He’ll be entering junior year of HS and still trying out.

...let him try out. he'll either make it or he won't. there's nothing else to be done. can't hold his hand forever.
