The thing that is special about Dante is that he commands respect from everyone, and has earned his accomplishments in far less supported positions than most of the other potential candidates. He is unique in the fact that he is undoubtedly one of the greatest champions of the imperium, but he is also a consummate diplomat who builds bridges with all the different factions of loyal humanity. I think one major concept to consider is that he immediately gained the respect of two Primarchs in an age that sees both of them utterly distraught at the horror of what has become of their Father’s plans, and yet with all the horrors, backsliding, treachery, stupidity, and war. There is ONE name that shows up over and over again across the entire span of the imperium.

your comment makes me realize just how alike in some regards Dante is to Sanguinius. from my understanding none of the other primarchs could truly hate Sanguinius, save for maybe angron but i personally viewed that more as jealousy than actual dislike. he was by far the most beloved of the primarchs, and Dantes ability to gain the respect and admiration of the various imperial factions is a reflection of his primarch.

He’s undoubtedly the single greatest space marine ever to live, but obviously that’s not the question here. Fully expect he will get this title after we see what he does during the Scouting and after the templars are formally established but for me Dante’s longevity and feats take it. Again though, respect your opinion.

I often go back to the wiki page of Dante to read the part where Darnath Lysander of the Imperial Fists, who himself was lost to the warp for 1k years, could not recall a time when Dante was not master of the Blood Angels. There was also that one snippet of how to compare all the Chapter Masters was foolhardy for all are equally honored in the eyes of the Emperor, but still Dante stands head and shoulders above most of his fellow Masters.

Yes he is the greatest chapter master. If Guilliman himself treats him as such there is no questioning it. Dude wants to die, but he continues on due to sense of responsibility, that is not something to underestimate. The struggles and *responsibilities* Dante has borne as a LEADER and an ICON (even before the Great Rift) far outstrips Sigismund or any Astartes whether 30k, 40k or era Indomitus. That matters for a Chapter Master is both a leader of people (astartes and baseline, military and civilian), and with that in mind the ONLY one who comes close but still very very far is Calgar. Sigismund may have the victories, but thats victories as a warrior and group of warriors, theres nothing there about responsibilities. In that front he doesnt even hold a candle to Calgar let alone Dante

Slightly unfair comparison, since Dante comes from the Chapter with the really unstable gene seed so he's been holding on to basically nothing for a long time, whereas other notables dont have the same opportunity because they come from a line that doesnt carry a 20% chance of exploding into a death metal album cover at any moment. Basically its one of those paradoxical "Its only because his situation sucks that he can look this good" things And then there's Vulkan Tu'Shan who im not even certain if he can die of natural causes, or if death will let him stay down? What's the deal with the Salamanders lifespan anyway? Did any of his sons inherit the perpetual quality? It would be fine if you had to live for like 6,000 years before it activates, would keep the trait without having a faction of "lol we are all secret necrons" Space Marines. This really feels like something I should already know, but dont.

You forget that Sigismund was a 1000 years the chapter master of the black templars and made them what Kharns vision showed us in the siege of terra. He not even lead the black templars but he created them. Not in a military and administrativ way but in spiritual way as well. He was ( propably) the better fighter, created a bigger army and has still the bigger title (emperors champion ) and bigger effect on the imperium as a whole. I dont want to make Dante small but I often thought about that topic and for me always showed 3 characters. And when I see RHO has same thoughts it might be not that bad. And for that Sigismund is the nr.1 (not just chpater master but Astartes) then Calgar then Dante.

Yes, Dante does his duty, completes the mission & continues on to the next. When the Blood Angels are part of a large conflict with other chapters or units of the guard he will get their leadership & ask for their input when developing battle plans, he’ll ask their experience and expertise on fighting certain foes and try his best to minimize casualties on imperial forces & citizens. He’s a old man that can’t stop but accepts his death but knows it won’t come until the prophecy of when he has to defend the Emperor at the golden throne from the great enemy then after that his duty will be fulfilled

Dante spoke with 2 Primarchs within an hour period. When The Lion and the Dark Angels needed aid, against fighting Angron, Azrael froze at the sight of the demon Primarch. Dante charged in without hesitation to assist The Lion. To top it all off, Dante is humble and values normal humans and what they bring to the Imperium.

Azrael is the Grand Master of the Dark Angel Legion, yes I said it😂, but his accomplishments pale next to Dante. Even the Lion treated Dante with more respect (once he got over the rage of seeing his brothers death mask ) then he did his own son who has commanded the legion in his name. To gain the respect of not just one but two Primarchs is an extraordinary thing. Dante is the consummate space marine, whilst he might be outclassed in every individual aspect of what makes a great space marine chapter master by multiple other chapter masters, none of them can match him as a whole package. I truly believe if Dante is to ever die that the honour guard of fellow chapter masters, primarchs, living legends of other chapters at the entombment of his body will be a sight never to be seen again.

Sigismund is not a serious contender. He was routinely dressed down in any strategy meetings; his skill was respected, not he himself. He was impetuous, defiant - disobeying direct orders from his primarch -little more than a weapon. We have not seen Sigismund in command of any sort, unless we count Keelers honour guard... and how did that go? Helbrecht is a much better contender than Sigismund. Edit - forgot. A chapter master must be a great warrior, which Sigismund is. A chapter master cannot be just a great warrior. They must be a strategist, on ground and in the void. They do not command legions so they must be able to work with other chapters and branches of the Imperial forces. They must be able to act for the defence of the chapter and Imperium, and not just their own whims. Does Sigismund satisfy this criteria? He does not.

In regards to Abaddons plot armor when fighting Sigismund: You have to encorporate the fact he was juiced by warp powers by erebus in TEATD3 which is the only way he could fight with Valdor. Sigismund fought a contender to Valdor at 1000 years old and would have killed him had the warp allowed it. Abaddon himself says that time had only brought Sigismund down to everyone else's level. Sigimund is the GOAT hands down as much as I love Dante and Logan.

Sigismund has a really important skeleton that is basically a super powered ork weirdboy shooting the power of juiced up fanatical tyranid-level-hiveminded-nun prayers and crushed dreams of trillions of child laborers straight into him. There is no "unfair advantage" in 40k, only the reality someone created this week. Sigismund is not defined enough of an entity to apply right now. He's a really great fighter, but so was that time warping battlecruiser that was mad we killed its human soul mate. Honestly im pretty sure that ship could have ended everything itself if it wasnt so emotionally distraught. I had to read that over a few times myself to make sure those words were real. Here's the real truth: You cant really compare things based on stories because of the classic "All stories are real, not all stories are true" thing. Different authors and different project leads have made some things wildly out of control. If you want to go on pure nonsense accomplishments/feats of strength, its Calgar by a mile. If you want to go on impact to the entire imperium, its Dante. If you want a martyr, then its Sigismund.
