I played the original DS2 with DLCs on PS3 on release for about ~800 hours and I absolutely LOVED this game. It felt different from the previous games, but I appreciated most of the new ideas and mechanics, adored the soundtrack, ambiance, covenants and core ideas (being centered around the undead curse as a personal tragedy rather then an instrument of higher powers). Hell, I even enjoyed fast weapon breaking (durability is ACTUALLY a thing at last, and not just a flavor number on neraly unbreakable weapons) and ADP stat (helps you actually feel the character progression, and with the cheapest levels in the series it makes you feel you are becoming more agile as you constantly level up bit by bit). Killing the area boss didn't make it dead for PvP interactions, bonfire ascetics were a great touch both gameplay-wise and immersion-wise, NPCs progressing their quests through achieving victories along with you made them more relatable somehow... Lots of minor changes to the previous formula atually worked. Some others... needed you to bend your mindset a bit to actually make sense. A few were actually bad, but not gamebreaking for me (like the torch, while being a great addition, had an annoying constant timer on it... why?!). Also graphics were not good at all (lighting, textures, far away views), even compared to the older Demon's Souls. Still all things considered I enjoyed this game immensely. Years later I've bought and played SOTFS on both PS4 and PC (did at least one complete NG run on each platform) and have to admit I hated a lot of changes compared to vanilla. Most enemy placements and some item placements not only make little sense, but also make the gameplay experience much worse. Lots of red phantoms just to make areas more annoying then they had to be. Also it outright BREAKS the pretty well-balanced difficulty curve of the original. So I'd say... SOTFS if okay if you've already played the vanilla game and seek something fresh yet familiar. But as a way to experience this game for the first time it's bad and highly not recommended if it can be helped (but it can't on current platforms, so... yeah, I get why people have more hate towards this game nowadays). DS2 still remains to be my favourite Soulsborne game to this day. That said, I've skipped Sekiro - played it for a few hours, hated almost everything about it and dropped it; perhaps will give it another shot at some point.
@mr.tacocat827910 ай бұрын
you are 1000 percent right. Sotfs truely feels like it is an "optional hard mode" and I only woould play this if you want to replay DS2 but you want a harder expirience. DS2 (Original) is such an good and carefully crafted Game that Sotfs nearly ruined it. I can totally understand why people hate DS2, when they play Sotfs thinking this is the "definitive" edition and do not like it. (sorry for my bad english)

When researching DS2 I loved a how a few of the takes on it go out of their way to say how insignificant everything is, it's just another cycle and we get to see it. It's not as important as 1 or 3. It feels epic as we take down the bosses and the like but really the choices don't matter. And as we see in other characters, our memories will fade just like them and the world doesn't care. I wish DS3 played with this idea more but I love how unique the theme is here.

@GilbertTheGilberGuy So the added pursuer in Things betwixt, more enemies in the forest of giants, more enemies and a pursuer in Lost Batile, extra heide knights in Heides Tower, more enemies in Iron Keep, more enemies in Shrine of Amano, more enemies in aldias keep, more and harder enemies at the start of Tseldora and more spiders as well, technically more enemies in Dragon Shrine but they aren't hostile unless you attack the dragon so that gets a pass. Looks to me like more than 3-4 areas.... and I'm sure I missed some. More enemies that require slow boring gameplay is not good game design especially when vanilla has an overall faster, more kinetic approach to its combat.

I'm always baffled how people say DS2 has the harshest penalty for dying in the series. DS2: you lose 5% max health per death up to 10 times DeS: you immediately drop to 50% max health; basically 1 death = 10 DS2 deaths DS1: you lose defense and status resistance bonuses from humanity (caps at 10 humanity); don't know the exact values, I'd guess you take ~10% more damage until the full recovery DS3: you lose the 30% bonus human form gives, so effectively 23.1% max health loss in one go
@Lytane10 ай бұрын
I haven’t played Demons Souls but from what I’ve heard that one probably has the harshest penalty. As for DS1 and DS3 the stats (at least to me) feel more like a bonus with a slight risk and reward there. If I want more stats I can use humanity but now I could get invaded. Same for ds3 if I want more health I use an ember. That 30% increase feels different because if I die sure I lose it, but after that there is no further penalty. It’s like hollow is the normal state and using an item makes you stronger. In DS 2 you start at max and every death takes something away making you feel weaker. If it was hard with 100% health, well now you have less. The only way to get back to the “normal” state is to use an item. So the mentality behind the punishment is very different. In ds1 and 3 it feels like you lost a bonus. In ds2 it feels like you are losing your normal state. THAT is why people say it’s a harsh penalty. Does that make sense to you?
@Praetarius10 ай бұрын
@@Lytane No, not really. You can see before the char creation that you already start with maxed out health penalty (health bar is clearly cut in half), and with the char creation done get the bonus one time for free like you do in DS3 when you beat a boss. DeS, DS1 and DS3 make you lose the bonus in 1 death, DS2 in 10, but all 4 games are balanced around having the maxed bonus active.

ADP is for role-playing. A spell caster should not be as agile as a melee fighter, but you can make them to be by spending points in ADP. To break a character is by your own choice, as in many other RPGs, it is called "cross-class". That's what makes DS2 unique than others. Look what happen in DS3, everyone just rolling and rolling and rolling, it is ridiculous.
@Lytane10 ай бұрын

@@Lytane Many complainers and thrashers only taking into melee fighter point of view, while the game gives a lot of character classes and not specifically designed for melee characters. I play as sorcerer to the end without a single point ADP because I don't need to get near the enemy, and I only need to get more powerful with magic to kill them fast. Its my favourite Dark Souls and i prefer Scholar so much more, i've Platinum'd OG as well but going back to OG is just pain and i prefer Scholar's Challenge, and every OG's placement of things isn't easier in my opinion like how on PS3 there's a random ass Mimic that isn't in Scholar, basically right in tge Doors of Pharros right outside before a Bonfire after Scorpioness Najka Boss Fight. Also i still find this claim always confusing but death has a HP penalty in almost every game, Dark Souls 3 there's a HP penalty for losing your Embered state, when you play Elden Ring you're gonna have a HP penalty for losing your Rune Arc State if you use a HP boosting Rune Arc, most notably in Demon's Souls if you die in Human Form just once you instantly lost half your HP, so i personally find Dark Souls 2's penalty the most forgiving, i'd rather lose half my HP after 5-10 deaths than from a single death, but to each his own. I actually always play the game with 6 Adaptibility now and i have no big problems, so i can say with confidence it most definitely isn't required, if you're good at the game and actually time you rolls properly everything works.

It was a game that i think was crucial to the future development of Souls games. It introduced many concepts that would go on to be welcomed staples into modern souls games and there were many concepts that didnt. Its a game that took genuine risks, and as far as risks go they dont always pan out in good reception. Many people have valid complaints but i see dark souls 2 as a foundation and turning point within the history of souls games. Since at the time the genre was new and fromsoftware rightfully wanted to see what they could and could not do in a souls like game. Even Miyazaki recently has gone on record saying even he doesnt know what the future of the souls series would have been without Ds2, and lets be honest if the horses mouth himself claims something that big im probably gonna believe him.

I relied on shields, so I played with that handicap 😅 But in DS1 when you died, you lost the ability to summon (and maybe some stats, I forget) then in 3 you don't lose health on dying, you lost the bonus health if you had consumed an ember before dying. So if you die while "hollow" you didn't lose any more health. All three games punish you in different ways and I like that 3 gives you a bonus so long as you don't die. In 2 every time you die you lose your max health making the next run harder. Also Human effigies are used in one side quest making them maybe a little more desirable than embers but that's based on the player. You are right though, it wasn't DS1 again and it gained a lot of hate for that reason. Some of it warranted, like the level design, but mostly it should be allowed to be its own thing.

I have only played Demon's Souls for about 30min on the PS3 back in the day, and I don't really remember it. So yep, I know basically nothing about Demon's Souls. Probably a good thing as I'm talking about DS2 now

Most disappointing game ever. So excited day 1 to get it then disbelief at how bad it was.

How was it really bad most of the arguments against it aren't really all the valid.

I didn't get to play this on day one but I feel that bad sentiment. After finally playing through the whole game though I've come to find that it is just different. It has a lot of dips compared to 1 but also a few fantastic ideas and elements.
