In one of my first missions ever, we were heading back to the pod, I fell behind and had no idea where to go, so I decided to kill myself and let them go without me. Instead, a scout came ALL the way back for me, revived me, and led me back to the pod with 30 seconds to spare.

One quick note in addition to the excellent monetization? Most Battlepasses also have predatory anti-consumer practices like FOMO, with the content in it lost entirely if you don't invest time/money before its gone. DRG on the otherhand completely sidesteps this altogether, pooling all the cosmetics from previous seasons into crates/packs that are found during missions. Despite the setting of the game, the Developers genuinely respect the Player's time. GSG are setting standards that everyone else in the industry ought to aspire to, and are deserving of all the praise they've rightly earned. It's a shame that this is an outlier nowadays, but it's a testament that proves gaming doesn't need scummy business practices to be successful.

I've played the game for a while and I must say, it's quite genius to have FOMO items randomly appear during missions. You even get rewarded with gold and other minerals when you find cargo/lost gear. But it is somewhat flawed that it's random. But I suppose it's better that way, as not to burn out on the lost gear/cargo grind.

@@Finppa I personally can agree that the implementation is both novel yet not quite perfect, I'd like to see maybe perhaps the usage of a rare currency like Error Cubes to be a craftable that can get one cosmetic of any choice from the Cargo/Backpack loot table? At least some mechanic to lessen the RNG variables, nonethless it's still impressive that GSG went about it in a way far beyond most of their peers in the gaming industry. Due to their track record of listening to the community? I have no doubts they'll address this aspect sooner or later.

I think one reason why the community is so friendly is because the game is HEAVILY centered around helping each other. Platforms, ziplines, shields, building pipelines together etc. Not even in L4D does it promote this level of cooperation

cooperation while being task oriented IS the only means of survival... its basicly baked into the game, hell even in single player you get a little helper bot to direct, cuz without any commands it tries to hover as close to you while shooting bugs in your vicinity. of course more experienced players can get away with more fuckery and friendly trolling every now and then, but the point still stands...

I would like to add only one thing to the last point: if you want to play with other people, its totally fine to play with randos through matchmaking without the mic even, game is really good at making non-verbal communication accessible and efficient, I've often played highest difficulty missions with randoms without writing or saying a single word. Everyone knew their roles and what to do, pinging or pressing "x" was sufficient enough for most tasks, to say "yes" you can often just rock and stone and everyone will know the meaning.

To anyone turned off by the mention of grinding: don’t be. ‘Grinding’ in this game is just playing the game as you normally would, just with some extra rewards at the end. Assignments are just strings of missions that you can either do or not- you’re free to accept other missions outside the assignment if something else catches your eye. There’s no repetitive aspect to the ‘grinding’, as every single unlockable in the game is just unlocked through standard gameplay.

I started playing recently and on my first day, playing along even with randoms just feels right. During one of my missions we managed to survive a pretty bad wave. I finished off some bugs and intelligently passed on fire and survived with around 5% health left. I looked around and realized the engineer was staring at me, probably just as surprised that I had survived. BOTH of us just shouted at the same time: *_ROCK AND STONE, BROTHE_*

Just wanna make it clear for new players: The fall damage reduction on engineer does NOT completely negate fall damage full stop. It does increase the height you can fall from and reduces fall damage but you will still take fall damage from high enough drops and can still go down from high enough drops. I'm not an expert on it but I've mistrusted the power of that upgrade enough times to know it can be a lethal mistake.

Another thing that I reall like about drg is how much of an adrenaline rush it is. In one moment you're doing a mission with not much threat ever showing up thinking that you're pretty good. And then you're in the second stage of a deep dive, your scout has been swarmed, your driller and engineer have been eaten by a cave leech and 2 oppressors are chasing you while you're low on hp and out of shields, doing your hardest to clutch the game so that you don't screw up the deep dive.

Oh boy, I remember my first haz 4 mission. Joined in in the middle of the round, all of the guys pros, all player level 100+. So, We were somewhere in a veery tight cave room, with 2 floors, and there were 2 oppressors raging hell on my teammates. I did my very best reviving every simgle one of my teammates as engi, on anout 20% hp, constantly escaping the oppressors, using speed boosts and providing people with red sugar and trying not to use it on myself. At some point all 3 of my teammates died and it was a TRUE adrenaline rush. Having already used up my field medic I narrowly avoided death on multiple occasions, resurrecting a guy, then jumping down to the first floor with 10 hp left and narrowly resurrected a teammate right before I was downed. The teammate that I saved dealt woth the other small bugs and eventually everyone was safe and we managed to take the oppressors down and finish the mission. Man, that was the most fun, anxious and rewarding mission I have ever played, thanks to you all who made this mission possible. Best DRG mission ever.

Xynarch Charge sucker, AKA "BET-C" (infected by the previously mentioned parasites), is a "chonker" of a combat mule that was abandoned when the company tried to tame the planet the first time (with mixed results) and is one of the (optional) mini-bosses in the game and one of the only ones who's presence is indicated by an audio cue that doesn't immediately start attacking you (aggros on proximity of 10 meters or damage).

don't forget, even if you don't buy skins or if you miss the skins from battle pass or seasonal events, they then enter a pool of randomly populated potential skins you can find in the game later anyways, you can ACTUALLY buy the game once and get everything in a system that rewards playing the game more :)

This game, after discovering it through a popular KZbinr back in its REALLY early stages of development, captivated me. From the start, I knew I HAD to play this game. At the time, I didn't have a job or money, and without the means to get the game right then, I simply gave up and subsequently forgot it existed for a number of years. One day, although I don't remember how, I was reminded of the game and went searching for it, since I had forgotten the name. When I found it, it looked even more incredible than I remembered. I LOVE horde shooters. I LOVE dwarves in media. The way that they're represented as mining and drinking machines. Partying down hard while simultaneously being the most badass, force-of-nature, tech-advancing mega-chads out there. I just always wanted to hang out with the bands of dwarves from the stories and movies that I was caught up in as a kid. Within 2 weeks of my purchase of DRG, I had logged close to 250 hours, and it replaced my long-standing favorite game of 10+ years. Deep Rock is IMMEDIATELY enjoyable, easy to digest, and can be unbelievably easy at its lowest difficulty, or BRUTALLY hard at its maximum. If you have not yet given Deep Rock a chance, there are certainly those who will think it's not for them, and that's fine. However, I would wager that the vast majority of casual and competitive gamers alike will find SO much to love in this game. I could EASILY type a 20-page essay about the depth of love I have for this game and why I love it so much. There is so much to learn and see about all of the lore, loot, upgrades, and cosmetics, etc. Instead of that, I will just say: if you are on the fence; take the leap. This game is one of the greatest of the past 2 centuries of gaming, I have no doubt in my mind. I hope it never dies, and that the updates keep coming for a long, long time because I will keep playing till I have no more rocks and/or stones to give. Rock on, miners. For Karl.

Whenever I play games, three things are what I consider the most important in the games. Good Direction, Good Feeling and Small Things. DRG hits them on a high note. Direction and Feeling go hand in hand. If you give your game a good direction, it shall feel good to play. Gameplay, Sound, Music really contribute to what many consider fun. But it's the small things. Petting the Robots, Drinking and Toasting at the Bar, the ability to dance at the Jukebox, all the funny voicelines and the engagement the Devs have is just, great. I can kick barrels into the drop pod and get a voice line telling me that I can't bring it with me. Then getting 4 of them into the Drop Pod and get a funny achievement. I'm still trying to kick every barrel in the rig into the pod. That's an achievement too.

Sure its a great game and they're amazing developers, but when i started playing everything was super alpha looking, the ship the guns etc. But hanging out at the bar and having a beer with the rando's from last mission was this magical moment for me. Like suddenly these werent just near-bot like other people from maybe the other side of the planet, suddenly these where actual people that i could crack jokes with and have fun with. You know how some games make you feel like most of the other people dont speak english? This game is the complete opposite of that, i've felt genuine fellowship and communication with people who actually dont speak english.

Listen, usually once I get a small taste of a game my mind is pretty made up on how I feel about it. When I first downloaded DRG as a part of PS+, I did not have the best opening experience. The tutorial mine at the start made me feel extremely claustrophobic, and the simple graphics kinda turned me off, so I just closed it and didn’t think of it anymore. Then, on a whim, I tried it again…and again…and again. It took me a few times before I stuck with it, and I’m glad I did, because once it set its hooks in, I cannot put it down. I’ve never had such a 180 turn of opinion like that in any game I can recall…but DRG is something really special. You really feel like you have a job to do, and your progress matches that perfectly. The learning experience for all the different mission types really felt like being a greenbeard and learning the ropes…and by no means was it a straightforward progression. Towards the beginning I was jumping into online jobs without knowing what I was doing, not having read the miners manual for said job, and felt like I was letting the team down. I felt obligated to go back and do them all solo at least once so I knew exactly the best way to complete each objective, that way I would become an asset instead of a liability. There’s just so much to add, and I don’t feel like I’m really doing it justice because I can’t find the perfect words to express how this game gives you a sense of accomplishment you don’t really get from games a lot anymore. I hope DRG lasts a long time, and the developers get the recognition they deserve.

@@geoshark12 Least and most essential is highly dependent on the mission type. Drillers are great most of the time, but during the rival boss battle, not so much. Scout is less usefull in short cramped maps with pretty much only tunnels. Engi is great a certains tasks, but lacks in survivability. Gunner struggles a bit in heavy swarms maps without chock points.

As a scout main I have to agree. For missions like dreadnought scout is less useful, but good luck getting those last few secondary objectives without one. I have probably 60% of my play time with scout and other classes just feel so slow in comparison.

this is an incredibly high quality video! That said, I have to disagree that it's hard to get into- I went from the tutorial straight into Hazard 1 and 2 multiplayer games, which are easy enough for that. The community is so nice that it just works! The customization is amazing- you mentioned how each class is good for aoe vs single target, but the reality is with overclocks that you can build out whatever you want. Love this game so much. Rock and stone!

You don't really meet toxic people(quite the opposite actually, there is always a pretty good chance of meeting some cool players, completing a shared assignment or just a couple missions and then drinking a few beers, which always makes my day a bit better), and the most of the issues i've had were with greenbeards who just haven't caught up on the basic rules, which I can totally forgive, especially since it is not a competitive game.

I have played around 300 hours. Overclocks change the game massively. To an extreme. To change the feeling of the same is to change your class and build constantly. Changes the game to a fun degree.

For sure. I just got to overclocks around the time I was finishing up this video. I’ve only promoted gunner, so I didn’t feel qualified to give my input on them, and I also chose not to include them to give more of a basic look at the game. With that being said though, the few I’ve unlocked are just so awesome and really change it up, another fantastic addition in this game.

Great video. I never even realized it till the end when you mentioned it, but I have never been mad or angry towards this game. For a while I seemed to always get mad at whatever I was playing (CoD, R6, etc.) being super competitive. Scout Main here, just wait till you unlock the M1000 and some pretty nifty overclocks like hipster allowing you to fire it very quickly. You'll be giving the gunner a run for their money on kills! Also, the grapple gun allows you to quickly reach downed teammates first essentially making you the first responder to revive in a lot of cases.

I think Scout is a much better class than you mentioned at one thing: playing the objective (especially the secondary ones, but some primary ones too). He's not great at fighting the bugs, but he's a god-send in many time crunched missions (such as gathering the Aquarks), or gathering Nitra in niche places in very mineral-poor missions.

The Scout also has the cryo grenade, which is not only AOE, but can be high single target damage when combined with power attack. Grappling hook also lets you get to weak points faster, and you can build his weapons for magdumping. Lowbie scout is probably the most painful class to play, however.

In my 20 hours of experience with DRG, I have to say, it has been a great experience. The community is awesome and supportive, I haven’t had a bad experience at all. Yeah sometimes we slip up in missions, forget to place a platform underneath the grappling scout, get C4 detonated in your face, 3 dwarves get downed by a Bulk Detonator while a Nemesis terrorizes the unlucky scout who got too close. But not once did I see an angry word sent. We managed to survive the Detonator Crisis because the Driller had Iron Will, escaping to the drop pod with 17 seconds to spare. I love all the characters, so much fun annoying MC. Except Molly. She pushed me off a cliff into a swarm. Anyway, really enjoy the game, glad to see others do too.

Another amzing thing about DRG you didnt mention is the mod support. Karl be praised its really good. They have 3 approval ratings depending on the mod: 1) Verified for mods that only effect personal accessability (sound files, UI setups) that dont affect base game level progression 2) Approved for mods that moderately change gameplay, but still retain normal ingame progression (harder difficulties, weapon rebalances) 3) Sandbox for mods that drastically change gameplay and ingame progression (instant unlocks, god weapons) You can play verified and approved mod lobbys on your regular save file. If you want to go crazy with sandbox mods, the game will make a copy of your regular save file just for that so you can have fun with wacky mods and still retain your ingame progression on your regular save file. I really wish other games implented this mod support setup as it makes mods very accessable without screwing base game progression.

Just fyi ive played 150 hours of scout before I finished all assigments for that class. I couldve still kept playing him and diving for matrix cores, buut I decided to spend another 450 hours building out the next 3 classes. So much end game content. So much replayability. No fomo. In over 500 hours I have had exactly one negative interaction with a player in DRG. You do get people being cheeky and teamkilling at the drop pod but they generally get you right back up and it's all in good fun. This game genuinely needs to be played multiplayer, and random groups are it's bread and butter. I often hop into lower level missions just to help out the greenbeards and so do many other veterans. When I get a bit burnt out, I take a break for a few weeks and then when I come back it catches me again.

While they can seem undergunned compared to other classes, the scout brings a lot of utility to the team and synergises really well with the engineer's platform launcher to easily reach minerals. He's also great at picking up downed teammates who are out of reach of other players.

Also, simply being able to *see* the entire swarm is incredibly helpful in my eyes, because it allows you to target effectively, whereas without light you are just taking shots in the dark if the bugs aren't close enough to you that you'd rather them not be there

About that slow zipline - if you quickly attach/deattach to it by spamming keys repeatedly you can sort of glide on that zipline and move a bit faster, just carefoul as if you miss a button you fall

Been playing DRG on Xbox since it hit early access at the start of 2018. I've taken a couple of months off from time to time, but it always draws me back in thanks to the fantastic updates, holiday events, and... well, videos like this. The Left 4 Dead comparison has always been understandable, being a 4-player coop horde shooter. I think what makes Deep Rock so enthralling compared to most games in that genre is that the exploration and resource collection make those moments between bug swarms vastly more interesting. There's a surprisingly deep learning curve as you start to gain a better understanding of how to efficiently mine your way through objectives while remaining aware of and dispatching aliens lurking in the dark. I agree there's still some repetitiveness to it, but when taking into consideration the randomly generated caves, the varied missions and enemies, the ridiculous build variety, and the natural camaraderie that comes of playing it with others - even with dwarves you've never met before - I find it more replayable than practically any other cooperative game I've ever tried. Rock and stone forever.

gunner main here, scout is also pretty good at dealing with flying enemies that shoot stuff, or just enemies that can disrupt the team. they have good damage, but as you said ad clear isnt that good. so dealing with the flying enemies or annoying enemies really help your fellow dwarves who are better at ad clear, keep ad clearing.

I see it as more an extra support tool to inflict negative statuses on enemies to complement scout’s already very supportive grenades.
