That boat lived in Newport harbor in Newport Beach for a long time. It was mored outside of balboa yacht club. I’ve taught multiple kids to sail in sabots sailing Laps around that thing. It looks like it just sat, barely ever moved. It will be interesting to see it have a new home.

That Deerfoot is a gorgeous boat. I really like the white walls with the wood trim. It brings in more light, and doesn't feel like a cave. It's too bad about all the high fees related to boating. I suppose that might prevent many people from getting the boat they would really like to have.

I think you guys made the right choice to pass on the deerfoot. With you guys living aboard I think a wider boat is best. Especially with the young one on the way. Keep up the good work!
@edrosenberger69475 жыл бұрын
I like that nice looking 68 footer and its hydraulic drive system and skegged rudder. With its relatively narrow beam, the draft may be close to 8 ft. One would need to clean 136' of underwater hull almost every three weeks, unless one wouldn't be setting still very long. With a good breeze, 300 mile days would be nice on a long cruise.....

That is a lot of boat and it appears to be well priced. But as you said the marina prices would high and at that length mooring options might be limited. And you may well be finding your you and your family spending more time in marinas for the next few years. Personally, despite the design limitations I prefer a wider beamed boat. The extra width enhances the feeling of space. Looking forward to sharing your boat shopping experiences with you.
@outabeat5 жыл бұрын
OMG, you guys were in my home marina. Sorry I missed you! I would have bought you a drink or two.
@operator05 жыл бұрын
Sailing a big boat like this is exponentially more expensive then a boat like RAN. Big boats are limited in marinas and haullout as Johan mentioned. Also, big boats like these typically have deep drafts. This boat has a 6.5 foot draft, which admittedly is pretty shallow for such a big boat, but that, along with the length, will limit the places you can sail. Having built and worked with hydraulic systems in the past, I would also be a little worried about the reliability of the drive system on this boat, especially in such a harsh environment. This boat looks clean from the images. If it's been maintained correctly, it's likely a very good buy. The monohull market is in a rut right now (everyone wants catamarans), so deals like this are easy to find. Ten years ago this boat would have cost twice as much. I think a shorter (under 50ft) boat with a wider beam would suit them better. Slower, but cheaper to sail and you still have comparable size.
@minermarcus5 жыл бұрын
operator0 They don’t spend much time in marinas so length doesn’t matter there so much. I like Dashews concepts. One big moster through hull instead of all over the place. It was designed for short handed sailing. Hydraulics work day in and day out on construction equipment. Just bring some spares. 6 v 9 feet draft don’t really limit cruising areas too much. You just anchor a little further out.
@johnfradkin30035 жыл бұрын
The draft on the Deerfoot is actually a tad over 9 feet. Hydraulics are used everywhere in the world for all kinds of applications and consequently there are good hydraulic mechanics in every port in the world. Using hydraulics for propulsion is somewhat rare on a sailboat but less so on commercial fishboats, and industrial hydraulic components are actually quite inexpensive by marine standards.
@operator05 жыл бұрын
@@johnfradkin3003Yes, I just checked and I was quoting the Deerfoot 61 draft, not the 68. Still less than expected even at that length. Hydraulic drive is still another system that needs maintenance and repair and it's not necessary on a sailboat. It's convenient, but not necessary. Winches and cranes on fishing boats are another matter. I wonder how many fishing boats are powered by a Hydraulic motor though? I would like to add, It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me though, but I would be curious as to it's reliability and serviceability.

Great research as always brought up to educate us. However, do y'all visit a lot of places where you dock versus anchor? I am early on in the research before reality stage and have learned that anchoring is getting harder to locate but, could you suggest a good resource to understand who doesn't deserve your business (non-anchoring locations)? I grew up traveling and developed a preference for non commercialized locations. I know it's getting harder to find such locations but, as a dreamer one has to keep their hopes up
