Yo Bill, i want to ask some things. how long did it take you to start making decent money and whether you were a special case or not ? Also, How bad is the back stuff due to the fact that you are in an awkward position for prolonged times ? Did you feel like the University gave you enough knowledge and hands on experience that you knew how to practice pretty well for the most part ? What are the typical working hours for your average dentist like ? i hope you can answer me as it would put me at peace and help me make my decision.
@billwright29635 жыл бұрын
@@redcastlefan Hi Nokia. With the understanding that 30 years ago the dental landscape was a bit different than it is today, I will answer your questions. When I graduated from dental school, I immediately went into a graduated program in prosthodontics. When I finished my training, I was offered a full time teaching position which paid me a fairly good salary. This allowed me to continue to learn and begin a dental practice from scratch. After 5 years of teaching I resigned because my practice was doing well enough that it was adequate to meet my financial needs. If I were asked by a new dentist for any advice I would tell them to work as much as possible wherever they could to earn as much money as they could and to build up their speed, get as much CE as possible, figure out where and how they want to practice, spend as much time as necessary to find their idea place to live, and go for it. With regards to my back issues....I work 5 days a week, do a lot of dentistry (with very limited attempts to maintain good body position), and have absolutely no physical ailments. However, I work out with a personal trainer 6 days a week so that might have something to do with it.

Bill Wright hi, I’m currently saving money by attending a community college first and I’m trying to decide what I want to do with my life. I am currently thinking about dentistry and was wondering how difficult/challenging it is academically compared to other careers. I’ve tried googling this and the only thing I can find is that you need anywhere from a 3.0-3.3 college to get accepted to dental school and a good score on your DAT. I know what I am capable of and I can achieve that easily obtain that gpa, but from the sounds of this video it’s much harder, please let me know your thoughts, thanks

There is so much more to learn than when I was a dental student way back when. A 1-year General Practice Residency after graduation is really essential to develop the technical skills needed for quality private practice. I hired dozens of dentists during my career. I young dentist without a GPR or AEGD certificate would not even make it to the interview stage.

@jasmineahrar5 жыл бұрын
Definitely not a deal breaker! I didn’t take a science course until my junior year of college. The first couple years of dental school are pretty science heavy, but most of it is review from undergrad and honestly, some people are stronger in clinic, and some are stronger in the sciences. In the science courses you may have to work harder than other students, but as long as you recognize and work on your weaknesses, put the time in, and stay motivated you will do great!

@jasmineahrar5 жыл бұрын
Wow, I didn’t even take chemistry or biology until I was 20. You are already starting a great foundation to become a dentist! Bio and chem are both equally important in college and dental school. Sorry if you were hoping you could avoid biology ;) but it really is the foundation for a lot of other science classes you will come across on the road to becoming a dentist. Check out my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoCtn4GBfMaLg80 to find out exactly what classes you’ll need to take in college (hint: bio and chem are two of them).

I'd start getting good at biology if I were you :-)
@lehuamedia12354 жыл бұрын
I'm halfway through my third year of dental school right now. I'll tell you this, there's nothing wrong with being a chemistry major in undergrad and if you will make the best grades in that major then by all means do it because you won't even get a shot a dentistry if you don't get in dental school. However, the first two years of dental are like a biology major on steroids! You're taking gross anatomy, physiology, cell biology, general pathology, microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, etc. You have on average 2 tests a week and sometimes 3. It's pure memorization and recall from lectures so if you're not good at that then you better get good at it. Being a chemistry major in undergrad might help you get good grades in undergrad but it won't help you AT ALL in dental school because there's no chemistry involved! The fact that chemistry is even a topic on the DAT doesn't make any sense at all. If you can maintain good grades as a biology major then that would help you a lot more when you get in dental school, but like I said you have to make the grades to get in. If you do choose biology or even if you stay chemistry and can take electives I would look at the courses in the dental school curriculum that you want to go to and start taking those classes so you're at least familiarized with the material. I loved biology and that's what I majored in in undergrad. I hated the first year of dental school because of all the lectures and tests. It's like someone offering you a slice of cake and then telling you you have to eat every slice right now. Enjoyable at first and then you're absolutely sick of it by you're your third slice. With that being said, now that I'm in clinic and actually getting to do what I came to school for I really enjoy it. It's just the price you have to pay if it's what you want to do.

My name is Chayse and I am a senior at a small private University I also play D2 for them. Ever since I was 3 years old and my mother took me to the dentist for the first time I have been interested in teeth, to the point that my Dentist had to keep asking me to step back because I was getting in the road. I was a Bio major my freshman year but because of my university's financial issues they cut the major so starting my sophomore year I had to switch to exercise Science as that is what they told me would be the closest to my current major and still very well accepted into graduate schools. I have a 2.9-3.0 cum gpa and hopefully will be 3.2 or higher after this last semester. I still have to take micro bio and organic chem as I can not fit it in my schedule this semester so after I graduate this May I will have to go back part time. I still need to take my Dat as well probably next spring. My goal is WVU dental school as its the closest to me. My parents support me as they know I truly want to do the work but are worried about me not getting in as I'm not the best standardized test taker as well as struggling in chemistry and high level math. So honestly do you think someone in my shoes has a chance of getting into Dental school or should I start looking into other careers? Thank you.
@jasmineahrar2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and for reaching out! I think if dentistry is really what you want to do you should keep going for it. There are a lot of dental students out there who have an undergrad gpa in that range or even lower so don’t let that stop you. Also, take the DAT and see how it goes. Definitely dont be discouraged if your first score isnt what you wanted, you can always retake it. A lot of my classmates took the DAT multiple times and even applied to dental school multiple times, so definitely keep going for it ❤️

I was truly convinced when I started shadowing at dental clinics, which I highly recommend! I think it will really help you either feel confident in your decision, or help you decide if you want to do something else. The other thing is, you dont have to decide right now. these videos on youtube about becoming a dentist are very disturbing. i dont want to see and hear a young femaie talk about becoming a dentist like its going to a party and just working whenever u feel like it . no wonder so many people are afraid of dentists and think they are not on the same level as other health care professionals and medical doctors. and unfortunately alot of people that are dentists start their own practice immediately after dental school and i think that is why there are so many bad dentists and i personally think female dentists are not as good as male dentists for alot of reasons and just like most surgeons are men in general so most dentists with great reviews and reputations are men as well .

@bunnyboo787303 жыл бұрын
I’m beginning to become frustrated with choosing my career. I’m tired of hearing the negativity about professional fields being oversaturated. Yeah, our generation (Millenials and Gen Z) was told to go to college. We were told we could be whatever we want as long as we got our education. We are the most educated; of course, there is an over-saturation. I’m on the fence about doing law or dentistry, and after taking my honors biology course, I’m aiming towards dentistry. I love the field, but I also want to live comfortably and not worry if my bills will be paid or not every month. I don’t like that this is the reality of things.
@UrbanMatts3 жыл бұрын
dentists are still top 5% earners in america, starting wages often reach six figures, and I would predict a decline university and post secondary school attendance with the new era of instant gratification and social media, scaling back the so called “saturation” in the field
@MrGW2fanboy3 жыл бұрын
They are polar opposite careers. What made you want to do law? You shouldnt do dent for the money it's the worst thing you could do and youll hear the same thing over and over like a broken record from DentalTown (the US dental forum). If you can picture yourself doing precise work within a milimeter and peering into an oral cavity everyday than you might enjoy it however if you have no interest in sculpting, shaping materials or using your hands youll burn out quickly.
@bunnyboo787303 жыл бұрын
@@MrGW2fanboy Did you not fully comprehend what I said? Both careers shouldn’t be done solely for the money. You’re giving unsolicited and irrelevant advice. I used to work in a dental office and the doctors let me observe different procures; with the patient’s consent of course. When I expressed I wanted to be a dentist, my coworkers encouraged me and said they’ll help me any way they can. I have wanted to be a dentist since 2016 but lacked the confidence to take OCHEM. I did my due diligence and learned the basics of each subject I might struggle in to give me room for the difficult sections. My personality fits with dentistry rather than law.

@@bunnyboo78730 Go for it. I apologise if I offended you but you didn't mention those things in your first post so pardon me if I didn't know. Hi I'm Korean, I was searching for the reasons which other people thought of to become a dentist. I really liked your information and it helped me a lot. I have a question;;; how many hours did you study a day to become a dentist?? Pls answer to my question if you've seen this!

this is such a hard question to answer 🙈 every year is so different. the first year of dental school we were in lectures all day for 5 days a week and studying on a lot of evenings and weekends. but as a second year its been a lot more time in the sim clinic and not quite as much studying/lectures (but some weeks have more than others).

You have lots of time to decide! I think you should spend some time talking to people in the professions that you are considering. Try asking a dentist if you can shadow. That’s really the best way to know if this is the career you want to commit to :) good luck!
@eddamami36155 жыл бұрын
Jasmine Ahrar what does shadow mean? and can you volunteer at any dental practice? do u just have to ask? or do u have to be in school?

I am in the same boat but I’m about to be a junior in college haha! What I’m doing is majoring in business but working science classes into my schedule. I know that I want to work as a dentist, but the business background and especially accounting classes will help immensely if you own your own clinic some day
@samanthamichelle82524 жыл бұрын
Piper Ray I didn’t know you could do that! I’m really into math and am indecisive on my science major because I’m interested in becoming a dentist or architect

Not sure if a dentist have that much freedom to choose their own pace as commented in the video. I feel that if I only do simple procedures and choose my own pace, I would not be able to make enough money to cut even and pay the bills especially today when dental insurance companies as reducing their re-imbursement to their dentists.

Science is a big part of dentistry, but there are lots of other parts too! I’m sure you can do it. My best advice is to learn study habits that work for you ❤️

i'm in my senior year and i'm very scared about going in to this because i'm not a straight A student, do you think it would be fine if i went there without being a straight A student?. and one more thing, do you have any recommendations for any books i should read to get all the information about dentistry before i go in there? this helped me out a ton, thanks!
@jasmineahrar4 жыл бұрын
No need for straight As! I think a good and realistic goal is a 3.3 GPA, and if you can get higher than that, even better. As for reading, I recommend reading anything in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) to stay up to date with what is happening in the dental world.

I prefer to be in a hospitalize environment, having most of the privileges mentioned in the video, like 35-40 hours a week. So, is there a specialty that will fulfill this? Plus, I'm planning to few business in Amazon, skill share, etc to pay out the debt and if there are any advices about ways to payout the debt which can be flexible to the studying environment, which I will truly appreciate from you!!Looking forward for your guys' help ❤!

I feel like a lot of people want to specialize in ortho because its more laid back.. but that makes it pretty competitive to get into specialty programs.
