Hey Everyone! ✨ Today we're watching Disney's 2003 Brother Bear Movie! I was surprised by the low rating this film has on Rotten Tomatoes. So I rewatched it to see if Brother Bear is actually good, or just nostalgic. If you enjoyed it, please don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT, and SUBSCRIBE. xo 💖
FILM SYNOPSIS♡
Kenai (Joaquin Phoenix) is a young Indian brave with a particular distaste for bears. When his brother Sitka (D.B. Sweeney) is killed by one, Kenai in turn kills the bear, only to be magically transformed into one himself. To make matters worse, his other brother Denahi (Jason Raize) vows to kill the bear Kenai has become. Kenai's only hope is a magical mountain where he believes he can be changed back to a human, and he enlists a real bear cub, Koda, to get him there.

Joaquin Phoenix, who voiced Kenai, lost his brother River in real life. According to the director, when they were recording Kenai's reaction to Sitka's death, Phoenix's performance was so raw and intense that much of it had to be cut for fear that it would upset kids too much.

BS... they should have kept it in as it creates more nuance to the character Kenai, and how he's letting revenge take over him. In fact, F*** the studio for cutting out Kenai's full confession to Koda.

Cool little detail you might miss: When he's a human, the movie is shown in letterbox, but when he wakes up as a bear, it transitions into wide-screen, the animals look less threatening, and the colors become more vibrant, to represent Kenai's perspective changing.

A lot of people didn't like this movie, but I thought it was cute, funny, and heartfelt. I especially love the brotherly relationship between Koda and Kenai. The animation is also beautiful to look at. But I do acknowledge that it has problems. It can be pretty tonally inconsistent at times. I also felt like the Phil Collins songs didn't help out the movie unlike in Tarzan. Still, this is a very enjoyable and underrated film. I love watching it.

Poor Denahi, it's not his fault. The reason he keeps going after the bear is because from his perspective he has just lost his two brothers and is alone and all he has left is the last conversation he had with Kenai, and it's that conversation that feds his desperation to get revenge, it's really the only thing keeping him going. Like he said in that one scene, he doesn't know what he's doing, he is so alone and confused and hurt. And you can see his shock when he realises the bear he was hunting and almost killed was Kenai. I always feel so bad for him, he was the one left out of the loop and left to mourn and suffer alone during this time.

I loved this movie as a kid! I lost my sister in 2021 and as an adult it’s really nestled it’s way into my heart. Ultimately, Brother Bear is about grief. When we’re grieving we’re often angry, and quick to pass judgment and blame. But this will not bring your loved one back. By turning into a bear, Kenai was able to see how his anger has only caused to hurt others like Koda and was granted a shot at redemption.

Note on Sitka's death scene: Kenai is voiced by Joaquin Phoenix, whose older brother was River Phoenix, 80s and 90s actor and icon who famous died young of an overdose at a club. Joaquin was there at the club with him, along with their sister Rain. He was 19 and was the one who made the 911 call - it was five minutes after River collapsed and started having seizures, no one else outside or inside the club made a call. I think Rain tried to give him mouth to mouth. Joaquin sounded pretty hysterical over the phone, he couldn't answer all the question because he didn't know what River took. Just thinking now, about the scene where Sitka died, and of Joaquin voice acting someone who lost their older brother suddenly when he'd also lost his older brother just as suddenly. And side note, in case anyone's doubting, yes those are their real names. River, Rain, Summer, Joaquin, and Liberty Phoenix. Those were their real first names - Joaquin went by Leaf for a bit though. Their surname used to be Bottom but their parents changed it when they left that weird cult they used to be in, chose the name Phoenix to symbolise their restart in life. Apparently River once said that his acting skills were nothing compared to Joaquin's. They're all vegans.

10/10 Outstanding Disney's penultimate traditionally animated feature proved to be one of its best. The film is loosely based on the mythology of the native people of the Pacific Northwest. It has many classic mythological elements such as transformations and journeys, both physical and spiritual. It is also unique among Disney films, in having no villain (at least in a tangible sense). The movie features great music by Phil Collins and beautiful animation. It also makes novel use of the movie screen by switching to a wider aspect ratio at a certain point in the story. The protagonist, the Inuit Kenai, learns the value of his totem, love, when he is transformed into a bear and becomes the traveling companion of the cub, Koda. The film also features the hilarious Canadian moose, Rutt and Tuke (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) for comic relief. I would count Brother Bear among my three favorite animated films (along with South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron). It's also great for the kids. 10/10

Brother Bear genuinely has one of the best first acts out of any Disney film. Its pacing is intense, the characters are layered, and the plot sets up a great message for the rest of the film to hopefully capitalize on. If the rest of the movie kept up with the first act, we would've had a truly phenomenal piece of art. Then the movie goes south as soon as Kenai turns into a bear. The overbearing comedy in the second act does not jive at all with the mature tone set up in the first. Koda and the two moose get grating very quickly, and the hijinks that ensue just don't help Brother Bear follow through with everything the first act lined up. I will admit some parts of the 2nd act are funny, but the hit rate of jokes in it is nowhere close to a good Dreamworks movie or Emperor's New Groove. It feels like we got two completely separate movies. On one side you have the powerful tone set up in the first act which is embodied by Sitka. And on the other, you have a screwball comedy flick with its face being Koda. The tonal 180 once Kenai wakes up as a bear is too jarring for Brother Bear to overcome. If it found a consistent tone, then the movie would've been received much better.
@thesardonicpig3835
@thesardonicpig3835 Жыл бұрын
That's a valid point, and I do see what you mean. The film does shift its tone with Kenai's transformation - but I honestly didn't think the humour itself was bad. Nor was the shift as drastic as many people feel, at least to me. The underlying darkness re-emerges whenever Denahi appears, through the observing presence of eagle-Sitka and through Kenai's reflective moment as he discovers the cave drawings. The first half also had its goofy moments between the brothers, they are simply overshadowed by the tragedy. I absolutely agree that the first act is in a league of its own compared to the second. But for me, it sets up and supports the funnier middle part rather than jarring with it :)

...nah. that's just wrong, theres nothing wrong with the 2nd half, theres humor throughout the movie, the tonal shift is to show Kenai seeing through different eyes, its lighter and brighter because now the animal world is no longer a mystery or unknown, also how is he supposed to learn his lesson or change his mind otherwise if he doesnt have a good time as a bear? Everything else is just unnecessary nitpicking, even if every criticism I have is right it doesn't ruin the movie of the 2nd half, it just feels like u didn't want to watch a movie with talking animals so u dislike the end half

I love the concept of found family. This is a great movie at showing that. I love the animation the water color landscape backgrounds are naturally beautiful. Kenai and his other two brothers so relatable. The fact that Kenai only saw one aspect of love in the beginning and grew to understand family love, friendship love, brotherly love, and the repercussions of vengeance. That hits hard.

I’m gonna put in my personal bit for why I love this movie so much. It holds a huge place in my heart because it was one of my favorite movies to watch with my father as a child. Although now it brings a lot of bittersweet feelings now due to me and him not having a relationship at all anymore due to personal issues. It both hurts but still feels amazing to watch this regardless. It’s also very emotional to me, talking about death, how revenge can ruin someone’s clear thought process, and how what we do truly can alter our future. Sometimes with very grave consequences. I love the way it’s revealed about Koda’s mom, how it slowly sinks in exactly *who* she was this whole time. The art is so gorgeous, especially the backgrounds. The animation is very smooth and easy on my eyes to watch, and I love all the characters regardless of how major or minor their role was in the film. The music was so mesmerizing throughout, especially when Kenai is transformed into a bear. That singing and instrumental behind it never fails to make me feel so calm and get goosebumps. Also, the fact I’m autistic doesn’t help, as I have had a *huge* hyperfixation on bears since I was about 4-5. They have become my obsession for years and many more to come. Hell, I have a bear necklace as a symbol to show my courage and bravery of surviving multiple types of abuse growing up. I never take it off unless I shower, hell I’m wearing it right now as I lay in my bed. In honest as I can be, I know this movie isn’t perfect. It has flaws, but every movie does. No matter how perfect a movie can seem to one or many people, there will always be others who can see flaws within anything. It all depends on how we go about it. I don’t mind people not liking this movie. But I do hate it when people just don’t like it for dumb reasons as like “Oh it’s predictable, oh I don’t like bears so this is a bad movie, oh the songs ruin everything, etc.” I am always up to hear constructive criticisms, just as long as it’s in a respectful manner. So, that is why to me, Brother Bear is honestly a much better movie than people like to admit.

For me, this is one of the most profound Disney films of all. Disney often tackles profound themes, but I think this one has a different kind of profundity. This is the only Disney film I can think of where the main character does something unspeakable, and the story is his journey towards accountability. In Hunchback, the main characters suffer unspeakable things, which is the source of its power and grittiness - yet the characters are very easy to root for due to the magnitude of the evil they're pitted against. In Brother Bear, meanwhile, the main character IS the evil itself. Kenai is a much more difficult protagonist, which kind of makes him unique. I think the main reason people didn't like it is the tonal shift from gravity to comedy that comes with Kenai's transformation. But the shift is honestly not as whiplash-inducing as many think, since the film definitely has its silly moments with human Kenai and is careful to preserve its serious core even throughout the more humorous bear-arc. Each of bear-Kenai's confrontations with Denahi is raw and scary. His discovery of the human cave art is haunting and tragic, and Koda's loving attachment to Kenai is heartwarming.

Human parts are really good but... After Kenai becomes a Bear that's where it mostly falls apart it becomes kinda boring and predictable. 🤭 I wished he was a human a bit longer it would made everything better. I love this movie but Kenai as a human is more interesting.

I just wanna say, thank you for reacting to this film and seeing how great it was. I saw this movie in theaters when it was first released as a kid and it was one of the best films from my childhood. So imagine my surprise when I learned that it wasn’t well received by critics. To this day it’s still one of my favorite Disney films from my childhood and I’m glad it’s getting some love. Haven’t seen much discussion on it, in fact your video is one of the first few I’ve seen. I love the story, the main characters, the amazing animation, I love Brother Bear!

I love how critics in the past found this story quite generic when it was one of the disney movies that showed how the cycle of violence can easily start until it becomes meaningless, how easily you can become the thing you hate or simply disagree with in the beginning, there was no romance, there wasn’t a clear villain or a really good hero. I see how the soundtrack, animation, and plot may have gone over a kid’s head, but as an adult I really appreciate every aspect of this and so do many of my peers I’ve recommended it to.

Obviously none of the critics know the feeling of wonder that we all get when we see such scenery and bonds between people, or in this case, bears. There's nothing like that feeling. It's so wonderful, like nostalgia, and then there's the music, like, come on, that opening song has such a wonderful message. How can they not love that?

Here’s some fun facts about Brother Bear, though some of you already know them. -Koda is played by Jeremy Suarez aka Jordan from The Bernie Mac Show. -D.B Sweeney, the actor who plays Sitka, previously played in Disney’s Dinosaur as Aladar. -Denahi is played by Jason Raize, who is well known for being part of the original Broadway cast of The Lion King, where he played as Simba. -In the early stages of production, it was under two different titles; Shadow Bear and Bears. -Kenai was originally gonna have an older brother figure named Griz. But got replaced with Koda cause the execs figured it’s best that Kenai have a younger brother figure. -Mark Mancina, who previously did the score for Tarzan, did the score for this movie too. -The deleted version of the scene where Kenai confesses about killing Koda’s mother is more emotional.
