I think it's a mixture. The difficulty is rough especially for folks who aren't used to this style gams

i can see how you'd get that, but not near as annoying as far as the death count nor do you get the various power up changes

I have this game on my steam deck. Well, the original one when I remastered why not make a whole new game with new mechanics? Make it multiplayer. Give it an RPG Element where you level up get different moves
