Is Dry Packing Concrete WORSE Than Wet Setting?

Oh, the old dry pack vs wet set debate - one of my favorites in the fence world. Today we're going to dive into some testing footage to settle the debate once and for all. Is wet-setting concrete really superior to dry packing? Let's dig into it to find out!

I only dry pack. The only moisture is ground moisture and my morning beers. Never had any failures.

I used to be a department manager for Lowe's where I ran the lumber / building materials departments. I can confirm concrete will set up by itself just from humidity if left alone to do so. Billing out and trashing 60's and 80's wasn't uncommon. You have to sell through it fast enough so it doesn't.

I mostly dry pack for fence builds. Have never had any failures due to the dry pack.

My only comment - with dry pack, you really can't set the concrete proud of the ground and 'dome' it to keep moisture away from the post...you can try, I suppose, but if it rains in the days after installation, it may not work. So I'd at least add some water to the top to float a shape to the top that will set in a few hours.

i usually used the quick post just add water for all of my posts as I replaced them...even though it said just add water and cover it, I would mix in the water a bit before I covered it up...never had a problem with any posts bending or falling in with this method....i know some people just pack dirt or clay around the post but the winter winds blow too hard for that method....when my new Vinyl fence got installed, the guys dug a hole, put in the post then dumped in a bag of mix and filled it with water...so far so good...true the wet mix looks solid and stronger but the dry pack is way stronger than foams or just dirt...I just get concerned that the fence posts move from vertical before the mix hardens

​​@@davidgatten1033 mud? You should probably get your eyes checked. There isn't even dirt sticking to their boots the ground is so dry. There is only 1 thing in the world that can be saturated to a 100%. And that's a liquid....

Something reaches 100% saturation when it can't absorb anymore liquid. You're right the ground is not 100% saturated in this vid, but it is very wet. Do you see the melting snow? Do you know what snow is mad of? I'll give you a hint, water, it's made of water. And yes, the bottom of and sides of their boots are covered in mud. Look at the blade on the mini x, also covered in mud.@@dozerboyd8784

Wet set with bucket and mixer is the best way. It takes less than 30 seconds to mix 50 pounds. If you dry set and there is no rain, you better pray there isnt a bunch of wind and that the customer doesn't push on it. The comment I get that gets me is, is it supposed to move, right after they push it. I've been telling people, did you know skyscrapers are meant to move in the wind.

Did you miss the part where they compacted it around the post? Or that conrete will setup off the humidity in the air alone. Most dirt has about 12%-20% moisture in it to anyways and that doesn't change much when it rains. You can push on those all you want. Unless you try and wiggle them out of the ground they won't be loose when you dry pack. Sky scrapers do move in the wind...

These guys are literally some of the best in the business... professionals, and you think that was a good enough argument to discredit them? You clearly missed the point of the video, It was not to Demonstrate how to remove a Post from concrete. It was meant to demonstrate the strength and efficiency of the concrete itself setting. If you didn't know that, how can we believe anything you say?
