I think the whole narrative of "woke games are bad" is not the full picture. There are plenty of examples of games that can be considered "woke AF" that are great games. (for example Baldurs gate 3, or cyberpunk2077). Great writers /gamedevs can write progressive themes in their games without ruining the game with their preachy messaging, bad writers make DA: Veilguard. On the other side of the spectrum there are real racist people trying to bend the narrative to their worldview by calling every game woke that doesn;t have a fully white cast in it.

I'm a left leaning centrist. Woke means pushing the ideology onto others in extreme ways (that are usually virtue signaling and is detrimental to society) like indoctrination, forced social messaging, censorship, and cancel culture. I support LGBTQ and minority rights but doesn't mean I'm woke. The woke mob are a cult that has lost common sense and decency. They are actively hating on certain groups of people based off their skin color or gender, which is basically racism and sexism, the very things they claim to oppose. You'll find they employ double standards everywhere and are not open to criticism and debate on their ideals. Also need to mention that many people who may appear to be woke are not actually woke. They are grifters who support wokeism simply because they can benefit socially and financially from it. When the tides turn you will see them switch sides immediately.

No. Having gay characters in your game does NOT make it woke. Woke is when gay pride or gay issues becomes really preachy. Just having two guys or women fall in love in a game..NOT WOKE! Having someone in the game rail against not being able to get married because the people in their areas don't accept gay marriage...WOKE. Know the difference!

Being anti-woke is very lucrative at the moment, so a lot of yt-ubers are chasing that algorithm. I think a better question is why so many yt-ubers have bought the lie how it's political messaging that is ruining gaming, movies, comic books, etc - when in reality it's about good vs bad writing and good vs bad games. 1. There are countless games, movies, books, comic books with political messaging in them that are amazing. Deus Ex, V for Vendetta, Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984, Squid Game, Watchmen, etc just to name a few. So, whether or not there is politics in art is really not a determining factor on quality - no matter how much the yt-algorithm might try to convince you of otherwise. 2. The vast majority of anti-woke yt-ubers also have an agenda and are pushing that stuff with 0 intellectual honesty. 3. But ok... maybe you might think it's only the proggressive politics that are bad in video games, while conservative politics are ok. Well, if that is your take, then how are you any different from the very people you are calling out? And besides, I've watched, played and consumed conservative art and it's 10 times worse. It's just that conservative yt-ubers never criticize their games and are too busy crafting an anti-woke narrative. So, if woke game fails, it's "go woke-go broke". And if a woke progressive game/movie does well (like Baldur's Gate 3, Barbie or House of the Dragon) they say it's not woke or just ignore it! -- In short, you guys have been brainwashed by the yt-algorithm and I promise you, one day you will feel embarrassed for ever taking rw yt seriously. Anyway, just thought i'd leave this here in case any of you anti-wokesters ever grow a pair to put up your rw theories outside your echo-chamber. Cheers!

I think the issue is when it is lazily implemented It should not be the driving factor in the game. Make it subtle in delivery and it will be much more impactful. I agree with the sentiment real world issues get in the way of escapism, but the fact video games as a medium have such a vast reach now is something to be proud of.

If i understand what being woke means, then i say it kinda pained me the situation around Flying Wild Hog studio namely in behalf of Shadow Warrior 3 where they simply fired Jason Liebrecht mid-development to "fight the stereotype of an asian character being voiced by a non-asian actor", which backfired as the comunity pointed out that the new actor and the character are indeed both asians, but from different countries (chinese character vs. korean actor). Or an example closer to my home, game called Chuchel, where the devs were forced to change main character´s appearance.

Stopped caring about new releases for a while now. Sometimes there are still good games like Tekken 8 but that's maybe one per year. Really retro gaming is where it's at.

@@donstarlancer This entire woke debate is only a fringe problem to me because I mainly play jrpgs. While there are some localizations that are woke (Eiyuden Chronicles), it`s still just a minor annoyance to me since I know Japanese. Maybe there are some woke JRPGs. But I haven`t come across one yet. Whenever I hear someone whining about woke games or monetization of games, I know immediately that he isn`t playing jrpgs.

"wokeness" is not what's killing games. There are plenty of insanely popular games that are incredibly woke (Overwatch, League of Legends, etc). But those games are doing just fine. So its not wokeness. It is, and has always been, corporate greed and bad writing. It just so happens that those two things also intersect with a certain group of people within the industry who end up making really terrible games (Like DA:Veilguard). Some of the dialogue I've seen from DA:V are toxic levels of cringe. You can have interesting diverse characters in games, but you need good writers to help you pull it off.

Do you really mind a woke game who is fun as hell? the problem is there isnt any, to me woke was more than anything a corporate safe word some years ago, is corporate the one safe and unfunny, now we have to wait for diversity probably not to dissapear but to tone down a couple of pegs, and hopefully for corporate to really listen his audience instead of trying to manipulate them

My main takeaway with part 2 is that they shoehorned in an abnormally buff masculine woman to take the place of Joel and take up half the story with her and her shallow personality and annoying friends.

@@TheDanimatorsChannel Ellie’s always been an incredible character, and her being gay has never been an issue for me. I understand the need for representation, but the characters in this game felt off. None of them are particularly attractive, and as someone who’s gay, I prefer seeing appealing male and female characters. Games are my escape from reality, and this shift from Joel’s classic masculinity to a cast that felt forced took away from the experience for me.

I have definitely noticed this in the last year or so with certain games I've played. This may be an unpopular opinion in this day and age. However, whilst it doesn't bother me how other people live their lives, I don't need it rammed down my throat when I play a game. If it's relevant to a storyline, then fair enough. However, I do feel some of it is just box ticking, and on those instances, I tend to just roll my eyes. For me, playing a game is pure escapism. If I want realworld issues, I'll go outside, watch the news, or just about do anything else, because it's everywhere you go these days.
