As new generations increasingly view gender and sexuality as unfixed, as not a question of either/or, boundaries are being broken down. Fashion too has taken up the mantle of challenging binary ideas, pushing forward a vision for genderless design.
To explore why the future of fashion is non-binary, i-D teams up with model and activist Munroe Bergdorf as she gears up for forward-thinking label Art School's spring/summer 19 show. Munroe takes us into the world of the genderless label to discuss this cultural shift, and introduces us to some of the show’s brilliant, beautiful faces.

With all the talk of 'toxic masculinity' in the forefront of our societies, my mother and I have concluded that if men were allowed to wear fingernail polish just because they like the way it looks. If they could wear skirts because their lower regions could breath thereby releasing them from restrictive garments or simply because they like the way it looks and they feel comfortable in it. If they could wear silk because they loved the way it felt on their skin or even makeup because they want their skin to have a more polished look. If they weren't afraid of judgement by people who associated masculinity with aggression and control as their badge of masculinity, the world would be a better place. CLOTHS DO NOT define a sexuality. True masculinity has to mean being a man that you are genuinely and authentically comfortable with, celebrating that regardless of what others think and judge you on based on silly outdated social constructs. Gender norms are falling but until we embrace the fact that not all men think alike, dress the same or have the same ideas of what beauty is or how beauty is defined or that wearing fingernail polish, a skirt or silk does not make you any less of a man, then the struggle for people to be who they really are will continue. At the end of the day we have to be able to embrace the idea that people should be allowed to happily and comfortably be who they are, without their manhood or femininity being in question. It makes for happier people and a happier world, where people don't have to hide what they like to conform to others ideas. Imagine that.

Nope. Gender is a social construct built on people's identities. It defines how you are treated in society. In indigenous cultures there have always been non binary people. Clothing has no gender. Not all non binary people are androgynous. Not all of them look androgynous.
