Sometimes get a guitar that has one little problem but the rest of the guitar is perfect. You send it back and may get one that is worse. So you fix the small problem and life goes on. My thoughts anyway.

The other option is to contact the dealer, explain the issue, and maybe negotiate a partial refund or credit note. Seems excessive to return a guitar based on a very minor issue. Most decent shops will come and go with you. It is in their interest, after all.

The angled pocket is on the pro-II jazzmaster as a feature, but has been an unlisted feature on some MIJ models as well, cool to see it moving down to squier. If you're new to offsets the reason is offset wisdom has been to shim the neck, especially if you like light strings, to get correct tension on the bridge.

May or may not be able to catch this live, but I will note this. My buddy and I compared fit and finish on my 2020 CV Jazzmaster to his 2012 Gibson 335, and the Squier was MUCH better in every possible way. So much so that when I left Alaska a few months ago he bought my Jazzmaster.

The fender offset vibrato bridge equiped guitars should definitely have a neck angle, it helps with vibrato stability. Puisheen can tell you all about it.

it may be a new feature on squiers. jazzmaster players have been adding a shim for ages to have a good break angle at the bridge so that strings don't buzz and come out of the saddle grooves.

@@tolvajakos I've got a new Player series Jazzmaster (andertons exclusive, which uses a vintera routed body) and it definitely has a more tilted neck angle than my old jazzmaster did. It's actually the first fender offset I've owned that doesn't need a shim added. I think it looks like fender are fixing this "problem" out of the gate on newer guitars so that people dont need to use shims any more. This obviously isn't proof that they've revised the newer squiers, but I wouldn't be suprised if they have.

@@Safetysealed i guess this confirms - or seems to be confirming - my theory. i think they are doing a trial run on squiers before they introduce it on fenders. maybe the player series will get it also later, i would be surprised if they changed the specs of the american made ones though. on the really expensive guitars, fender and gibson at least, everything is about tradition and original specs.

I recently got a Squire bullet hardtail Strat on sale, 3-piece body, decent setup. Will swap out the pickguard/pups, I just wanted an inexpensive guitar, and for less than $200, it's decent. Many years ago, I replaced the neck of a Silvertone 60s electric, single pup, with a Squire skunk-stripe maple neck, and new bridge- a great improvement! You have made some GREAT points... can't wait to see and hear the upgrades! Thanks, Dylan!

Just got a Paranormal offset tele and the Toronado at a sweet price. Brand new, both are Crafted in China models. Both were totally playable out of the box. After a setup they are great. The fretwork is hands down better than my MIM player mustang bass. I've been playing since 1982 and am picky. Considering I've seen Gibsons north of $3k with issues, well I'm not a Gibson fan so won't say more. The Squiers are solid and most I've seen are good instruments.

Neck shims are very common in both Jazzmasters and Jaguars. Having a preset angle is interesting but not unexpected. As for the string saddle, I've noticed the same thing on full Fenders where the strings didn't even come close to lining up with the pickup poles. Although I haven't noticed any issues with the sound when trying to adjust the spacing.

The saddle thing might be just that two of the six saddles were mounted backwards (their backs facing forward). It may even have happened at the OEM parts supplier before the Squier assembly line. Both Fender and Sweetwater could have caught it though.

Thanks Dylan, I really appreciate this review. I recently bought the exact same guitar in blue from a local dealer. My first ever Jazzmaster. Part of what they offer with their sale is “lifetime set up“. Mine was perfectly set up when I received it though and I would say the quality control is quite amazing. I’ve owned the number of expensive and inexpensive guitars and this stacks up really well. I did not have the issue with the saddle that you did. I am also going to switch mine to have “10s“ on it. I’m really excited to see what you do with it on the upgrades. Although I’m very happy with it now and plan to play it in at a live gig in October, that doesn’t mean I won’t eventually upgrade it which is something I do with all my guitars :-)

The two main issues I’ve experienced- 1. Very dry fretboards in store (may be a store issue plus logistical issues coming from factory) 2. Rough frets or sharp fret ends. These are both fixable, and the first is on the store, but it’s hard to connect with a guitar that feels rushed. This was definitely a bigger issue during height of COVID. But, that string spacing issue is in line with that ‘rushed feeling’. It’s one of those ‘if this is an issue, what else is?’. Otherwise, my favorite strat is the KWS strat that has the block inlays, so I’d be open to buying one of these used.

I got a Squier vintage modified strat from 2015. The plan was to sell it after getting a early 80s Tokai silver star strat. I cant get myself to sell it as its such a great guitar. Everything about it, the way it plays, the feel of the trem , the pickups well I did change them ! Thing is this Squier cost me secondhand 180 euro and the tokai is worth here in Holland around 750 euro but the Squier in not inferior in anyway compared to any of my cool Japnese guitars. Its a keeper !!

My new Squier CV 50's tele arrived yesterday direct from Fender. The packaging was perfect, the guitar set up perfectly, with even the strings being uniformly set at a semitone down from in tune for an easy tune up. Honestly, it needs nothing - best set up guitar I've every gotten. Only caveat on QC is, if you look carefully, from the right angle, there a tiny mistake in the routing for the bridge - you really have to look - but otherwise terrific.

I bought a new 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster in Blue about 2 weeks ago. I returned it over the weekend. Lots of issues the cable was very loose in the output jack, signal cutting in and out. The Rhythm Circuit Switch was also floppy it didn't make the switch smoothly defective. Bridge kept slipping down while playing. I haven't broke a string in years, broke 3 strings within 30 minutes. Too many problems so returned to the store. I also have the 40th Anniversary Telecaster and that one is perfect. Got the Black and Gold one. The neck is great plays great, that one I would recommend. Do a review of that one next, really enjoy your videos. Looking at the Strat now......

"Bridge kept slipping down while playing." This is a common problem on jazzmasters when using thinner strings, like 10's and below. Using thicker strings, OR shimming the neck so that the break angle and string tension is increased, will almost always stop this happening. "I haven't broke a string in years, broke 3 strings within 30 minutes." This problem is common for offset newbies, and is almost always caused by using (non NYXL) D'addario strings, which are notoriously bad for unwinding on offset vibrato units because they dont have nearly enough winds at the ball end. So those problems aren't necessarily squier problems, they're just bad setup problems. But yeah the dodgy output jack and switch are definite QC issues.

Recently bought a Squier CV telecaster 60's custom. Other than a couple of under finish issues. Out of the box thr guitar played awesome 👌. So good in fact I had orederd brass saddles and a pearloid pickguard. I fitted the pickguard but left the saddles because the guitar was set up so well I didn't want to mess with it. Even the stock strings U left because the guitar rings really well. I have owned 12 Squiers over the years. My Japanese model is still my favourite. But the CV models are brilliant even after a basic setup. Especially as I'm a home guitar player. Good value for money 💰

Because of the oddball bridge and vibrato system on Jazzmasters and Jaguars, they often need the neck to be shimmed, so that angled neck pocket is apparently a factory done permanent shim to make it play better right out of the box without having to take the neck off and shim the neck pocket.

My Squier is a 2021 surf green Mustang HH made in Indonesia so I've heard that probably means made for Fender/Squier by Samick. Fit, finish, neck, frets, hardware, electronics all excellent. Zero noise in selector and pots, perfect grounding, has well done shielding paint in all cavities and foil tape on underside of pickguard. Hardtail bridge is solid and well built and has the individual microadjustable saddles. Plays fantastic. Pickups are not great but not bad and I get around their minor deficiencies with my amp eq, and a preamp pedal when I want some extra drive. Overall I give it an honest 96%. I paid $150 used for this in my local pawn and there was not a scratch on it. I imagine a snobby kid turned his nose up at Christmastime because it's not a Real Fender. Still blows my mind I ran across this. If I'm just lucky, I hope others have the same luck. I will be in the market for another Squier. I also have nice guitars by Schecter, Ibanez, Epiphone and Yamaha. My Squier compares well in all aspects.

The angle is because of the bridge. That bridge is sort of like a TOM bridge in that it sits up higher than a standard strat or tele bridge so you need some neck angle to make the action work properly.

I haven’t seen these Squires as yet. I did have a few in the mid 80’s made in Japan Strats and a Tele. They were all flawless I regret selling them. They were better than what fender was putting out at the time from what I saw. I do have a standard Squire Strat that had a piece of sandpaper in the neck pocket that was used as a shim. It’s about 20 years old and the skunk stripe is popping out it was made in Indonesia. Love the Japanese Fenders they don’t seem to have the multiple piece bodies like the USA made. That’s another story.

I think the key regarding what is acceptable varies on the customer & what they view as a deal-breaker or deal-maker. If I loved the guitar otherwise, I too would have kept it and fixed those minor issues. Ten or twelve years ago I likely would have sent it back. Either way is fine as it always comes down to customer satisfaction.

Nice content. Nothing lately but would guess these are good guitars. '85, i first hear of Squiers being available,,,,MIJ, i think. Demoed a Strat,,,,reminded me too much of a '75 i sold. Too slippery on jams. Home, it was great. Bought an Arbor WS. It's still here. Flatter neck profile plus it just sounded better, plywood body and all ;) 20th Ann Fat Tele needed fret work. No wonder no one bought it. I did. It sat for years. Covered. Good guitar. JagMaster, saw this '06. Sat neglected after being in a shops window a year later (not local). Mentioned this to my Wife. She buys it for me for Christmas. Kleened up and my RF axe (Blueline, mostly) Pots have needed a spray or three. Not the guitars fault. Otherwise, no complaints. I hope all's well with Sq. Rocky road for everything these days.

My metallic Ruby Red is excellent, no finish issues only dealer issues, to lazy to lower the action and instead cranked on the truss rod which thankfully didn't cause any permanent damage to the neck, it did buzz a little to which I gave it about 2 to 3 times the neck relief and let it sit for a few days then set the whole thing up and, I have zero complaints. It was a display model which I saved over a hundred bucks on.

Love the message... Chill out people, it's a guitar. It doesn't end ur life. Perspective! I just got a Classic Vibe Jaguar from Sweetwater. It didn't have QC issues so much as it had offset issues. I had to shim the neck, therefore add more foam under the bridge pu and loc-tite every screw on the bridge. Of course a full setup was needed but as u said. That's not QC. All new guitars need a setup. I've got multiple Gibsons and Fenders. Every single one of them needed the nut filed when new. It's just part of the game. With my CV Jaguar even with having spent 1.5hrs to get it "right" I'm amazed how awesome it is for $400. With some electronics tweaks it'll b as good as my Mexican Jazzmaster.

I bought a Fender Ultra Telecaster in Texas Tea from Sweetwater on 26 May 2022. It was delivered on 1 June after what was considered a "Professional Setup" for an additional $99.00. At first sight I was amazed at how beautiful this guitar was. I had not seen a Texas Tea color on anything in person. At the first strum there was an audible buzz in the B string. Also the G string sounded dead. Going further up the neck there were 2 other frets that buzzed. The intonation was a joke and the string heights were all over the map. Setup is setup and some could have changed in shipping due to the fact it went from Indianna to Ohio, to S.E. Texas, then to somewhere in Tennessee, then to S.W. Texas, New Mexico, Tuscon, Arizona, then finally to Las Vegas. I followed it constantly to see where it was en route. Having read some of the negative reviews on the Sweetwater 55 point inspection and professional setup, I had made an appointment with Teresa Topaz Guitar Repair in Vegas back on 24 April, her closest appointment was for 3 June 2022. I found her through Heartbreaker Guitars also located in Vegas. Research showed Teresa Topaz does a full inspection and setup on every guitar Heartbreaker Guitars sells before leaving the store. I made the appointment and Teresa began checking my Telecaster finding many things that should have been found in the 55 point inspection long before it went for the professional setup. The bone nut was improperly cut at Fender which caused the deadened G and buzzing B strings. It had 2 high frets, one on the 11th and the second on the 14th. The string heights were all over the map and the intonation was off. There were a couple of others that needed filed on the upper part of the neck that grabbed the thumb. There was a dent on the back of the neck also. The pickups both needed height adjustments. Many other things also that I would think the 55 point inspection should have caught. These all should have been caught in the 55 point and again in the setup at Sweetwater. I contacted customer service only to be told it probably change during shipping. After detailing everything Teresa found incorrect they wrote back and told me the setup left the store "within both Fender's & Sweetwaters specs". But, they reimbursed my setup costs and the cost of the new strings I needed to buy totaling around $113.00. After receiving it back from Teresa Topaz Guitars with the list of everything she found incorrect - including that she needed to do a fret level process, Sweetwater also reimbursed the $150.00 Teresa charged me for doing the repairs. First, I believe the new CEO of Fender Guitars needs to "reinstate" some level of quality control, especially at the the Ultra line of guitars, which are not created but assembled by the builders in the Fender Custom Shop. They seem to blow it regurlarly. Secondly, most of what Teresa found should have been caught in Sweetwaters 55 point inspection. Third, for sure the improper setup should have been set properly in Seeetwater's alleged "Professional Setup" processes. My first experience with purchasing a guitar from Sweetwater was excellent in all ways, means, and processes. Back in February of 2019 I purchased a Taylor Builders Edition K14ce which arrived in perfect condition, the same condition it left Taylor's factory. It is still the same today and hasn't changed at all except the wood coming alive. This is why I chose Sweetwater for my new Tele Ultra. After 2 "not published" reviews -- Sweetwater finally published my review on the Tele. But it took some "dress blowing up" for that to happen. This tells me that there are probably many more disgruntled customer reviews that haven't been published. The gentleman I was working with in customer service stated he was taking my complaint directly to the person(s) in charge of the 55 point and pro setup sections and bringing my complaint up in a meeting to get it balanced. Did he? Who knows! But for sure if everyone purchasing a guitar from Sweetwater complains - they will need to make the changes to make sure these inspections actually take place. This does not stop me from purchasing another guitar from Sweetwater, but for sure I will never purchase their pro setup services, nor will I complain. I will take them/it directly to Topaz Guitar Repair in Las Vegas. If she tells me to send it back, I will do so. Topaz Guitar Repair.com TopazGuitarRepair@gmail.com 415.497.7668

I ordered this same model in mid-December of 2022. The order was filled in Mid-January 2023. I bought it from Sweetwater. It has some problems: Fret sprout [probably caused by the weather during shipping: California to Indiana to South Carolina], The bridge seems to be a little bit low causing buzz on the higher frets. I described to my Sweetwater rep and he offered to have Sweetwater fix the issues. I declined that offer as I do know how to do the work needed. The guitar is very playable but I'm thinking installing locking tuners because the guitar falls out of tune Even with the problems for what I paid for it [$359 USD] I think it was a good deal. If I had bought a $2000 guitar and It had these issues I would have shipped in back but not for an instrument under $400. The only thing I wonder about is if I need to replace the pickups. Last summer I bought a damaged demo [It got dropped om the bottom side of the lower bout] Squire Paranormal Toronado for about $200 off the usual sale price. I was surprised just how good it sounds.Squire as a brand is alright and affordable. The pickups seem to be good. In my experience Squire is good enough to be a working man's guitar. It's not a Fender JM or a PRS Silver Sky so don't compare them that way.

The j mascis jm has a neck angle instead of a shim. The j mascis jm was just discontinued as well and the body pretty much looks like the 40th anniversary body. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they recycled the body, finish, and gold anodized pickguard.

I used to refuse to buy anything without playing it first, but I've now bought two Gibsons and two American Fenders online . . . all four of them have problems I would have noticed and possibly passed on. Problems that were easy to see but weren't disclosed. In fact the 50s Standard P90 gold top I just bought last week, has serious binding scraping issues over every bit of the guitar and should never have left the factory floor, and it was from Sweetwater too. Never again. In-person ONLY.

I have the J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster. I haven’t taken the neck off to verify if there are any shims, but there’s is definitely some neck angle to it. Only mods I’ve done was add some copper shielding to the routing, there was no shielding paint from the factory. It was a little buzzy when I got it, shielding took care of the issue. I was going to file the nut anyway so I didn't return it. It was such a bad set up issue that it graduated to a quality control issue. I love the guitar now but it really did ruin my plans that day.

Watching this on my TV. You stumbled into The Offset Universe! First recommendation would be to watch Mike Adam's channel Puisheen. So Jazzmaster were for jazz players. It was supposed to replace hollow bodied guitars. So yes there should be a pitch back of 1% or less. The bridge on your guitar is actually a Mustang bridge which is a common upgrade for offset guitars (Jazzmasters, Jaguars, etc...). So what you are hitting on everything here is actually features for an offset guitar. First thing is that these guitars are designed for heavy gauge strings, lime 11s or higher. So you may want to bump up your string guage. Second, Offset guitars are their own thing, they are fundamentally different than Teles or Strats. If you open up to this is a different type of guitar then it opens up to you. Basically it falls into a subcategory of guitar like hollow bodies or Nashville tuned guitars. It is its own thing. You may be right on the bridge barrels but you may want to try 11s or more on their first. I half way agree with your final assesment in that I would bring this guitar back and have the shop restring it with NYXL 11s and have them addredd the saddle issue. That should put this guitar EXACTLY where you want ir to be.

The angled neck pocket on Fender/Squier offsets is relatively new. The neck pocket is normally level. Back in the early days of Fender offsets, the guitars were shipped with a shim. Unless one wants to go with a Mastery bridge, offsets with floating tremolos are best set up with a neck shim. I shimmed the necks of my Jaguar, Jazzmaster, and Bass VI.

I have a pine Jazzmastet body for one of my current builds that has a neck pocket that is too shallow--I'm going to have to remove some wood so the neck doesn't sit too high. So, this is a possible candidate. As for shims killing sustain, to my ears, the sustain is fine on my current Jazzmaster and Jaguar, both of which have shims. Otoh, how much sustain do I really need? I was excited to open my Fender Original 50’s tele on Christmas Day… only to see a massive neck pocket gap on one side and a chip on the paint on the other. Many frets looked like they were cut too deep with filler put in. The ash tray cover also didn’t fit and the fancy tweed case jams when trying to open on one side, requiring a bread knife to pry open. Cheap and nasty on a guitar that retails for just under $4000 Australian dollars (got it on sale though). Also looked like the neck was put on while the nitro was still drying. disappointing. It’s now being shipped back for an exchange. My last 2 guitars were Mayones, wasn’t expecting that kind of attention to detail but this was terrible

I will give credit to the squire neck, it was good, but everything else was meh at best. I think squire classic vibe area of price are good starters but after that, nah. It’s Worst QC guitars I’ve had from fender lately have been USA models so go figure. American pro 2 tele had a fibre between the layers of the pick guard, a bridge plate that had so many imperfections it should have just been instantly thrown out and glue blobs on and around the nut. American ultra P bass actually got returned because the pickguard had some wonky screws put in at an odd angle, imperfections in the wood in the headstock and down in the cavities it was an absolute mess of left over CNC and polishing material. By contrast the only problem with my MIM jag bass is a slightly warped pick guard, and my MIJ aerodyne and MIM player plus meteora have nothing noteworthy at all in the QC department. I’ve also just bought a squire CV 50’s style bass to use as a project, and again it doesn’t really have any problems. It’s made cheaper, you can tell that, but actual QC? Not really. My takeaway is really that modern manufacturing has raised all the standards so high that even the cheap guitars are well made, but none of them are immune from QC issues
