This year, I'm shooting bulk roll (expired) tri-x 400 in a camera that came from a box of fruit loops. Doesn't get much more frugal than that 😉

Having shot maybe 10 rolls, I believe New Classic is Fomo 400. My lab turns it into a grainy mess in Tmax RS in a converted Noritsu V50. Only way I found so far that isn't crazy grainy is DDX 9+1 stand for 45 minutes. The whole expensive film theme seems a bit overdone at this point, I think the younger folks just don't know where to find affordable stuff.

I ordered a bunch of Rigsby's Ez400 when it was $4.99. I was sorry that he stopped rolling it. It is Formapan as is Arista. I use it or the other Forma films when I'm testing, etc. It has more grain than Delta 400 or TMAX 400 but it is a good film.

Being someone that tends to only shoot b&w I like Kentmere, especially pushed 2 stops, Fomopan’s also decent but I’ve never gotten good results with Arista.

Thanks! I try to keep things pretty simple - I shoot video of my subjects on my phone and then edit the montages with the still images in iMovie - I may make a video about it someday.

Wonderful shots as always. Keep an eye out on sales on places that sell film as well. That’s what I did for next years FFP I got 4pks of FujiColor film 200 (36exp) for $20.00 which equaled out to 6.66 a roll. I love bw film but color film is my jam. ❤

Nice photos. My walgreens sells the kodak film now and the same price as your Walgreens which is not a bad price but glad retailers are starting to sell film again.

Canon and Nikon DSLR users can save money by buying a cheap Canon or Nikon autofocus camera. For example, the Nikon F55 and Canon Rebel dont cost a lot of cash and you can use the lenses you already own.

It's cool to see film prices coming down. I now always stock a bit of Foma in the freezer after doing that deep dive with Holga 400. A super cheap film, but I always come away with great results.

Nice shots, Dave, One day I will do the FFP. Over on this side of the pond (where everything is more expensive film photography isn't a cheap hobby. I don't shoot a lot of film, maybe 6 rolls a year and consider it a treat and something to savour. I send my film out to a lab by post (again Royal Mail is akin to highway robbery) but the lab costs are reasonable and they send you a dropbox link to download the files and your negs get posted back to you in the mail.

Thanks Andy. I have a local lab that I sometimes use for my C-41. They typically develop same day or next day and do the Dropbox link as well.

Nice! If you must have access to colour film and don't want to pay for portra prices invest you your time and learn bulk loading cine film, buy a large amount and have access to enough rolls at home for a good while!

Good idea going b/w with this video and topic ;) Unfortunatelly b/w film development costs more here in Germany when going for cheap development through drugstores. The development comes with a premium and they also force you to get premium paper for prints instead of the option to get normal ones. This makes it almost even when you add the film prices of color and b/w each. Guess I have to get into developing myself to really get the benefit from shooting b/w ;)

Me who is a Hobbiest, Once in a blue moon photographer, Yes but it depends especially the recurring cost. Like you mention before the Kodak Ultramax for the colour. I personally find Kodak vision3 It is sort of sustainable, especially a seller (Who in my country is consider our saint of Film rolls) who sells at a good price can get a handle. Also, Fomapan is good. and if you're lucky, one of those backing paper problem (?) Ilford HP4 that I actually got for free. Tbf, if you want to save money, invest in a DSLR like me. you can satisfy your photography thirst with digital and save money for a more expensive Film stock especially me who shoot 6X7.

$7,99 for a 36 roll of kodak ultramax? Man I'm jealous, here those rolls are around €16 everywhere and there's not really any cheaper rolls apart from black and white... Film cameras are definitely cheap though on the used market. I got a Minolta XD5, X-300 and 5000 with a couple of lenses for €50 which definitely felt like a steal. The XD5 needs some love with the seals, but the X-300 is looking good!

Great shots! Wondering what developer you used with that film? Have shot a couple rolls of it in the past and wasn’t happy with the results from the lab. All your B&W turns out really nice. Going to soon be developing B&W film at home.

And developing film is not rocket science. Timings and temperatures mostly don't need to be extra precise to the second. You just need a dark closet you can get into to load the film on the reels and put them in the tank.
