This album represents the problem with post-2015 Drake. He's at the point where he's accomplished about everything an artist could. I don't believe Drake is setting out to be known as the biggest rapper but instead the biggest artist. As a result, this and the last couple of albums have dropped in terms of quality and thoughtfulness and one could argue are more giant playlists than concept-focused albums. He's lacking the passion he used to have and his priorities have shifted, that's why we get projects like FATD. I still believe that Drake can create one last great album, but it needs to be a mature album with more transparency with a concept, that could be special. But that's just my take, I'm neutral when it comes to Drake, but after FATD, it's made me more confident about my opinion.

This is a really good review and I agree with basically everything you said. Having been a Drake fan since I was in high school to now.. his subject matter just hasn’t evolved. There are some really good songs on here but then some flat out skips which for a Drake album is shocking. I hope the time away from music gives him some time to reflect and grow (3/4 years at least).

He’s phoned it in, he’s a billionaire and breaks streaming records regardless of how bad the projects are. It was corny on more life when he was dedicating a song to 19 year old jorja smith, also him jumping on every bandwagon with a trending artist, Sexy Redd, Blocboy, Blueface,Yeat, Yachty, Gunna&baby. You’re a superstar you don’t need to try and constantly beg to be the topic. And now he’s 38 rapping about corny topics.

I'm in my early 30s and been a fan of his since 09. He was a lot more mature, level headed, self aware in the music earlier on in his career. Now the music has evolved to a very rich man who acts terribly with no real introspection as to why he acts the way he does. He has gone everywhere AND seen everything. You would think that hed have alot more stories about living. It doesnt have to be political or anything. Like talk about how you're dealing with your aging mom and how that looks in the final chapter of her life. Talk about how weird it is that you're a billionaire and how weird it is to have so much compared to family and friends. Talk about how you think your life would like at 37 if rap didn't work out. Like it's easy concepts that don't offend and are genuinely interesting if he sat down and focused in the studio. Him just mindlessly going through the good times with little to no world building or new insight is weird for who is one of the biggest rapper in the world, 37 years old and is a billionaire. It made sense for him to talk his shit from 2013-2018. But for his core fan base we've grown up and moved past the bullshit. We know you're one of the greatest rappers of all time, we know you're fucking hot women, we know all that. You don't have to be the old Drake. You just have to talk about shit that is a bit meaningful and insightful.

Great review of the album. You can tell Drake is tired and over the games, but isn't channelling his energy into the music. As much as I long for the 2011-2015 Drake, I wish he'd take more time between albums and make sure he creates something more worth listening to. It's rare to find popular artists whose music isn't oversaturated at the moment, which is a shame. At the end of the day, I'd rather a tight 7 track album like Daytona or The Plugs I Met than a massive album with 2-3 decent songs...

I can see what you mean about wanting his the content of his lyrics to be different. There are some things that I disliked about the album (the awful skit in the song with 21 for one) but I found more things that I liked about it. I am not looking for Drake to necessarily write about mature topics on his songs for the sake of appealing to an older crowd. The older (or any) crowd can just choose not to listen if it no longer resonates. Drake has remained relevant for a reason whereas some others that were popular along with him 15 years ago don't have that same kind of appeal. There used to be a time where artists created what they wanted and consumers just either relate or they don't. Now with everyone being able to express their opinion on a forum, other people get influenced by that and then react in the same way. I appreciate that his lane is heartaches and fun times, and that he wants to experiment with different music styles and work with different artists. Also, I think the comparison with the Beckham documentary is not totally the same. I am sure if Drake had released a documentary and we see more of his interactions with his child and those around him, it would be different than the bragadocious persona he has in his songs. So many other artists or creatives have talked about being inspired by speaking with Drake. That is a side that we may not always see, nor are we entitled to see it. With that being said, I also appreciate how you as a consumer of music want more. You are one of the reviewers I like to watch! Definitely entertaining and knowledgeable! Thank you!

The album title 'Nothing Was The Same' turned out to be very prophetic. Whilst Drake has gone on and conquered the music scene commercially since 2013, his subject matter has suffered for it and truly, nothing has been the same since. Whereas before, the old Drake would give us insightful musings about his ambition to reach the top, the current Drake who's at the top has grown complacent. His last three albums have largely been about him taking aim at women and acting like a 21 year old frat boy. Where is the Tuscan Leather Drake? The Over My Dead Body Drake? The Headlines and Underground Kings Drake? That is who the fans were referencing when they say they miss the old Drake. They miss the Drake that put in effort. The Drake that was ambitious and hungry for success. The Drake that would give fans an exciting album rollout. Drake album release days used to feel like an event. Remember the hype leading up to Views? These days, it seems like he doesn't care. The album covers are uninspired, the rollout is nonexistent and the music is okay but not great. It's like he's just putting out albums to fulfil his contractual obligations. Drake is the biggest artist of his generation, but in gaining the world, he lost what made him special.

It does feel that for a while now he’s been covering the same topics (women issues, him Vs Michael Jackson and doing something only crazy rich people can do). That said, he has shown over and over again he can talk about those subjects AND make it resonate with people and have a emotional impact. However, very few songs on this album did that for me. Plus, if he cares about his fans and controlling expectations then he must sort out his album titles/artwork/roll out in general. This is not something most artists need to worry about but because of his wide range of sounds, one audience always gets left disappointed. “For All The Dogs” people instantly thought it was going to be a rap album, it wasn’t! Then when touring he said “I’m going to give you the old Drake” that certainly wasn’t the old Drake! Maybe a modern take on the old Drake. Lil Yatchy said “These are some of the best Drake verses ever” which would imply he’s spiting bars, he barely did that! It’s been an issue across other recent albums too. Honestly never mind - nobody expected that sound, CLB everyone expected it to be a lover album. It’s almost like he wants as many eyes on it as possible, at the detriment of the album response, which is something I’d get from an upcoming rapper but not the GOAT.

I'm under 20, really enjoy your videos and agree with this take. I liked what you said on how you wouldn't hang out with me, and I wouldn't hang out with you. But in this album it feels like Drake is trying so hard for that to happen with a song like IDGAF. If he had stuck to the sounds of First person shooter, 8am in Charlotte, Slime you out and Away from home I really think this could've been very good.

I have a theory that, Drake is grinding these albums to finish his deal and to finish breaking all the records. As he mentioned, “I’m one away from Michael nigga, beat it.” I’m hoping he’s just doing these recent drops to complete his $500 million universal deal, that way he can focus on Legacy oriented albums again.

you broke it down way better than Joe Budden. 🤣 i agreed with his point he jus made it harsh, you came in and broke it down in a way that Drake would look foolosh to leave you a giant paragraph like he left Joe, all you said in this video is exactly what alot of us felt

This album is so tragic when you think of it. A 37 year old man rapping about being rejected by 25 year olds. My relatability to drake has pretty much gone as ive turned 18,19, and now 20.

It’s gonna be interesting to see how the album ages. As someone who is a huge Drake fan, I think the album has some of his best moments. I really loved the R&B records and, even the ones that dive into the newer sound. The album is really great in my opinion and honestly my only problem with it is the sequencing. And the funniest thing is that when you mention the Peter Pan syndrome. Drake uses Peter Pan in the show as a motif. I don’t think it’s Drake worst to me that will always be Thank Me Later. That album just doesn’t have anything that resembles Drake’s signature style and sound outside of four tracks.

I completely agree! It's like the guy keeps using his fame & wealth to put off emotional growth. For the longest time, I felt his music sounded like a tool to stay relevant rather than a medium to evolve and express himself artistically. As a result, most of his recent tracks just sound inauthentic because in order to stay relevant, he may feel the need to keep up with the latest artists & trends rather than (as corny as this may sound) be himself. It's almost like he doesn't know who he is without the fame...

Room for improvement was one of the first mixtapes I ever heard and have been a massive Drake fan since. I’m gonna be honest this is his worst album, I didn’t want to continue past the first 3 songs on my first listen because I knew what kind of album this was. I’m disappointed because Drake can do so much better because he’s proved it. Highlight of the album was the J cole track for sure even though he got washed on his own song. Drake knows it isn’t his best work because he’s trolling anyone on Instagram that hates it 😅 anyway just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in.

Drake needs to see this. If he gets offended it’s on him but this is exactly how it feels. Drake is the greatest artist in the world (to me), and I expected the music to reflect that of! To me, he can date and hang around whoever he want to, he just can’t forget that to he’s the big dawg, he should be the influence, not the one being influenced. FATD reflects his now lifestyle and the young gen he’s clearly influenced by (heavily) and not knocking the young gen, cause I fxck with a lot of it….but to me he’s fed them enough in CLB and HL, so he’s already connected…now it’s time to come home, give your day 1’s sum genuine love 😂 new Drake cool, but this was suppose to be For All The Dogs! This was suppose to be special. He’s the greatest, the music needed to reflect! The break should do him some good….hopefully whenever we hear from him again he actually has something to talk about. Much love for this review JD, it’s perfectly said. 👊🏾

The thing about this album is that usually his album will grow on you but for this album I don’t have any songs that I would come back too off this album. Her loss I knew it was a solid album off of the first listen, but clb and honestly never mind had grew to be one of my favorite drake albums , for all the dogs just doesn’t have any substance to me just my opinion.

I hope this album serves as an example that the past can't come back. It remindes me abt The Weeknd and how fans want the "OG Trilogy Abel" when he's not that guy anymore. "Honestly, Nevermind" was a great surprise for me bc I thought "ok!! he's changing!" (and I actually enjoyed the album a lot!), but than he came back w all that 20yr old loverboy sh!t, like... bro, be yourself >now
