The Summer Tomato Pie is really good. It's technically a white pie since there's no sauce, but the tomatoes more than make up for it. They have a local farm that grows all the tomatoes for the summer tomato pie, so the tomatoes are at peak freshness. My go-to pie at Pepe's is a bacon and onion. Pepe's cuts their onion in a lrage dice, which I prefer to sknny, stringy rings or slivers. If you liked the OG tomato pie at Pepe's, you'll like Sally's version also. Sally's pies are more sauce heavy and cheese light. Sally's is known for their potato and rosemary pie. I'm not a fan of it, since I find the potatoes tend to be underdone, but lots of people like it. New Haven style has crust which is denser and chewier than NY style. But you're right, it's all about the greasy, charred, crispy crust! Oh, and the Foxon Park soda flavor to get is birch beer, which is kinda like a clear root beer.

New Haven pizza is hands down my favorite. Pepe's was my first taste of it, and they're still my top choice. They have the best combination of quality, price, and service. Sally's is more expensive, great pizza, but they have capacity issues. If you don't get your order in the minute they open, it's a 1 to 2 hour wait for takeout. Modern is cheaper than Pepe's but they have issues with service. No online ordering and you have to call dozens of times to get through to someone.

Keep up the great work UA! Fair review! Pepe's and Modern, I think, are more Hybrid between NY style and New Haven style. Sally's and Delucia's are that classic New Haven style that burn super hot with coal, so you get that crazy crispy crust. In my experience, really good root beer is usually way less carbonated than, say, a Coke. I think this is intentional. If you don't prefer that, totally cool, but I think the idea may have been to make it feel like a luxury product since soda syrup is relatively expensive, and carbonated water is relatively cheap. I have no idea if this is true! But it's what I've always assumed, and personally, I love flatter root beers. I don't need all that fizz, gimme a little fizz and a ton of flavor!
@uaeats2 ай бұрын
That kinda makes sense. I think if they were going the less fizzy route I get that, but I found this flavor to be kinda overly sweet. But just my taste personally. I felt if it were going to be that sweet more carbonation would balance it more. Perhaps that's just my taste though
@ryanashmore85482 ай бұрын
@@uaeats Yeah, I get it. In my experience, the better root beers I was referring to tend to be less sweet to the point that some people find it insufficiently sweet. That's how I like 'em, but to each their own! Totally agree that the sweetness / carbonation balance is important.

I have been blessed because truly great pizza in the New York area is almost never more than 5 or 6 minutes away. That said, I truly love going to Frank Pepe’s and it’s certainly worth the 150 minute drive from my home in Suffolk County. And if the weather’s good, traversing Long Island Sound by ferry makes the trip even more enjoyable. The old school fresh tomato pie is spectacularly good. It’s seasonal and if you order it in the second half of August you’ll get it at its best. You might want to plan your next visit with that in mind. But the wondrous old school fresh tomato pie pales in comparison to Frank Pepe’s fresh clam white pie. I was so saddened that your allergies made sampling the fresh clam white pie to risky to try. If you ever happen upon a way to eliminate the risk, please return to Frank Pepe’s and enjoy why I (and many others) believe that the fresh clam white pie is simply the best pizza on the planet. By the way, I think menu’s mention of the possibility of encountering pieces of clam shell foretell the pie’s excellence. The clams arriving in the pie just brought to your table were almost certainly in local waters not more than 8 hours ago and they were shucked on premises not more than a few minutes before they landed on what was to be your pie.
