I grew up in NYC and kick myself now for never traveling up to New Haven to try the pizza. You just never heard anything about it back then. Now I live in CA and am seriously thinking about making a trip out to NH just to do the pizza tour. Great vid! Any plans to review Modern?
@ed1pk2 ай бұрын
I’ve been to all three. No need to fly back. I prefer Sally, Modern, and then Franks in that order. But my wife love’s Franks tomato pie the best. If you’ve had great NYC pizza, it’s just as good but different. Like a cross between Neapolitan style and NYC style. In NYC my favorite is Amore’s in college point which is similar to Sally’s. Also Lucali’s in Brooklyn is excellent. Have yet to try John’s of Bleecker. 🍕
@keppela12 ай бұрын
@@ed1pk Well, I'm a foodie so I kind of feel like I'm missing out. Plus I was in NYC in the 70s and 80s, before places like Lucali's were even there. I was just a kid then and doubt my family ever took us to any of the "great" places like Di Fara or John's of Bleecker. So I feel like I need to experience all this awesome pizza as an adult.
@ed1pk2 ай бұрын
@@keppela1 haha. I feel ya. Never heard of New Haven pizza also until recently. Made a trip of it a few months ago for the same reason after growing up on NYC pizza since the 80’s. Portnoy is generally accurate with his ratings, so look for a pizza place in Cali that does New Haven style that he’s reviewed. Anything in the 8’s will be close enough. Also tried Di Fara’s for the first time recently, but after the owners death. Very good pizza, but not something I would go out of my way for. Can’t say what it was like before. But glad I got to try it. 👍
@keppela12 ай бұрын
@@ed1pk Oh I've completely given up on CA. Pizza's unspeakably bad here. I think the highest rank Dave ever gave to a CA joint is 8.2 and that wasn't NH style. I don't know that anyone's doing that here. Just out of curiosity, have you done the Chicago deep dish circuit? I know people love to hate on deep dish, but the pies I see coming out of places like Lou Malnati's look pretty awesome to me.
@ed1pk2 ай бұрын
@@keppela1 look up Portnoys review of Ozzie’s in Glendale CA. I’m sure it will be close enough. Also you can always cook one yourself. Lots of good videos out there on making every style of pizza. As for Chicago, never had it but I’m open minded. I love a good Sicilian slice, so the thickness maybe similar I imagine. Also had some great Detroit style pizza in Austin Texas of all places. Seemed to be authentic as the owners were from Detroit. Either way it was delicious.

Thanks for wearing the tribute tee-shirt to Mamaroneck's Walter's Hot Dogs! Potatoes are a common topping in Italy; my Italian mother, who lived her first 24 years in a small Italian town makes it often and taught me son to do so too -- he's a hit with his friends. The simple flavors of the potatoes allows you to better appreciate the taste of a properly made dough. It's also typically Italian -- simple, with a single herb (rosemary) so that the quality of the potatoes stand out. A better potato produces a richer taste and even slice is moist inside and crisp outside. Also pairs well with homemade Italian sausage crumbled on the potatoes.

I live in San Diego California and have to travel to Beverly Hills to get a good New York slice at Mulberry Street pizza. It is very well known and I always see celebrities there. Chicago tavern style (they just call it thin crust here) can vary in terms of the crust. Sometimes it's paper thin like a cracker and sometimes the dough can be quite thick. It just depends on the place. One thing they all have in common, and this is just my perspective as a guy who grew up in NYC and now lives in Chicago, is they put A LOT of cheese on their pizzas here. Sometimes it can be too much, which is unpleasant for me because I spend the whole time just chewing cheese. But overall, Chicago pizza is very good. Even the deep dish is good, but Chicagoans don't like to claim deep dish as being theirs. I never understood that. Also the standard topping is ground sausage. I hardly see anyone eating regular pies unless they're vegetarians.
