Is Fujifilm's NEW C200 Just More Kodak?

Last week a story made the rounds about Fuji restarting film manufacture in China. But is Fujifilm really making anything there or is this just more repackaging of existing Kodak products? Well, as it turns out, the answer is right on the box. With a little help from the iPhone, we figure out what's inside those new Fujifilm C200, and Fujifilm C400 boxes. Unfortunately for us though, the answer isn't great.

I have been telling folks this from day one. I know someone from China who has told people this Friday 1. You guys, the original post literally said that they were just packing film. It literally said that. No where did it ever say they were coating it. And, the guy I talked to from China, said that this factory has never had any type of coating capability, ever. It’s always been finishing, whether color 35 or medical films. Guys, don’t just jump the gun, actually look at the sources, and if you don’t understand them, ask someone who aspens the language and lives in the same area of the world to translate…

I bought some Fuji 200 last week at our local Photo shop and it was $2.00 cheaper per roll than Kodak Gold,

I think this is half the story. My thought is they probably are finishing what was manufactured in the U.S. before they start coating there. When Fuji did coating in the past, it would be huge quantities and only a few times a year. My thought is it was cheaper to finish packaging what film was made in America and they will start coating once they need new film. I don’t expect the formula to change much. Also, plenty of people have done spectrum analysis to show they are slightly different in the greens and blues. Even at Kodak, this was not Gold. It was just close because it was made by Kodak. We’ll see. Come back to my comment in 6-8 months and let’s argue if there’s a noticeable change in the film haha

It's known that Kodak can make a lot of film, but they have a bottleneck in confectioning... ie stuffing film in canisters. I suspected the same as you when I just saw a bunch of photos of spooling and packaging, but no coating. Coating color film is not easy.

It seems like (based off of the promotional poster) that the rebate markers on the films are also going to get the Fuji "racing stripes" (like original C200 and Superia 400). I'm curious as to whether that's done already in the USA or they do that portion in China.

Most likely, consumers won’t get any significant price decreases. If Fuji sold us Gold and UltraMax at significantly lower prices than Kodak, it could hurt Kodak’s profits and may threaten Fuji’s access to the film stocks. Most likely, Fuji will just pocket the extra profits from cheaper repackaging costs.

FUJIFILM has long dissembled the coating line, maybe in 2017. And before that they have massively produced many films to be frozen for gradual release until it’s out of stock, according to their own estimation about how film would be fading out in the future. Period. I work for fujifilm. Btw fujifilm is also considering reconstructing the coating line however it requires market demand to be sufficient for that line to be restarted, coz the automation line once initiated makes a huge amount of films way more than today’s demand, that’s the PL they have to consider. And again the machines have been dissembled that’s why they have to refer to Kodak and Ilford for OEM. Simply check the films, there’s no “fujicolor” wording on Kodak made fujifilm film.

Either way, you can’t win. You have to deal with lack of quality or lack of bank balance.

I don't think this will be the final thing for Fuji... Let's see in a couple months... What would they do with their Coating Machines? How about 120 film? There a lot of open questions if you ask me.

What folks don't bring into the discussion is that INSTAX does require coating. There is a Negative / substrate used in integral instant film. Polaroid uses Inovisproject which is the former Agfa machinery (that coats Orwo). So even if Fuji did away completely with 35 and 120 film, the coating is still there for Instax. It can very well possible that they just prio resources for instax and there are no slots for film. 35 and 120 finishing should hopefully still be around, and they do to some extent for E6. That they don't make C41 in house (120 none) is a bit of a Canary in the mine situation... but batches do seem to hit the market here and there.

New Polaroid is trash, nothing like the older cameras and film. I’ve bought and returned 4 different newer Polaroid cameras. The film is also insanely expensive and needs to be babied. Instax is far superior in every way.

I think Fuji’s commitment to producing instax is one of the very reasons they aren’t manufacturing 35mm film. Demand for instax is through the roof and there’s plenty money to be made there. So I wouldn’t be too worried!

Is it C200 or just 200? Were they not different films?
@Overexposed1
@Overexposed1 Ай бұрын
They were at one time. Now, it’s my understanding that both C200, and Fujifilm 200 are the same thing. Repackaged Kodak Gold. At one point C200 and Superia 200 were distinct films, Fujis own formulations.

@@Overexposed1 Fuji has NEVER called the Kodak stuff c200/c400. It's always been referred to as fujicolor 200 and 400 without the C. What was said was that they are resuming the production of c200/c400. I don't think we can really say at this point if it's definitely repackaged ultramax/gold or not.
@Overexposed1

@@elk3407 where do you suppose that Fuji is manufacturing C200/400 in the United States? They have no 35mm manufacturing in the States.
@elk3407
@elk3407 Ай бұрын
@@Overexposed1 But consider this, Kodak very much has the ability to make custom film for 3rd parties, such as 400 dynamic. While it's definitely made in a Kodak facility, we simply don't know anything else beyond that.

It is in fact bad news. Fuji film is outsourcing repackaging. Or is this Chinese firm license holder for the name Fuji Film on filmstock?
@horizonoftheeast
@horizonoftheeast Ай бұрын
Yes!Star is Fuji's local partner that previously promoted Fuji's medical film. Repackaging for these 200/400 was never done by Fujifilm anyways
