So here’s something that we could be getting wrong: When Aokiji and Garp clash one final time, Aokiji states that Garp has trained a terrible enemy and Garp states he’s expelled. As they clash and are blown away from each other, Aokiji looks away and Garp gives a small smile while looking at him before he looks away. I’d like to interpret this as a “Things are going as planned” sort of thing. Finally Garps final message to Koby, Tashigi, Helmeppo, Grousse, and the other young navy marines is true: They definitely are the future of the Marines but this is not to say that Aokiji won’t or shouldn’t be the one who will lead them.
