When Caitlin went to Iowa, coach Bluter said " We had to change things when Caitlin came". They let her play the way she wanted to play. Geno is old school and has to worry about his reputation. If Paige had gone with a coach like Lisa Bluter, she would have had more success.

Major difference between Lisa and Geno is that Iowa was grateful and appreciative of Caitlin remaining loyal instead of going to perennial powerhouse and welcomed her with open arms. Geno, I speculate, probably feels more entitled to being able to recruit super teams with the multiple top recruits and then expects them to play within his system - which, if he’s been successful, why change? Lisa didn’t have an ego attached to coaching like Geno has and it shows.
@FabrizioPati-i6fАй бұрын
More successful than being the only one to have won the POTY title as a freshman and the first of the NIL era to have a shoe named after her? leaving out everything that came before or in the meantime. But the question is whether it would have been better, not whether it would have been more successful; according to a video seen a few days ago, Paige's game has always improved over the years, and the fact that she can play as a 1, 2, 3 or 4, both in attack and defense, proves it. In her college years, Clark had tremendous success, but her game didn't improve much, she just improved her percentages a bit, and I blame Bluder for that for years. @ckyung1312 Which powerhouses offered Clark a scholarship?

For Geno, it is always about his legacy. His putting Caitlin down as her rookie season approached and his turn around now to complimenting CC now. Geno does not want anything to put a dull moment on his legacy. Geno is a great coach but I have to tell you one little secret. Great coaches have great players. It is obvious to me, Geno is a better recruiter than a coach. Yes, sometimes his UConn teams win nit because of him but in spite of him. This is Geno's legacy!
@RudCh01Ай бұрын
Geno's biggest problem is that nobody recognizes sarcasm anymore, everyone would rather assume the worst about a person and their words instead. That Holy Cross halftime interview was 100% sarcasm - Paige doesn't stand around, Geno knows Paige doesn't stand around, and anyone who watched that game knows Paige _wasn't_ standing around. The giveaway should have been when he followed up that statement with another about how she needs to have the ball in her hands going 1-on-1 to be happy - which if you know anything about Paige, you know that statement is absurd and not meant to be taken seriously. She was constantly moving during that game (on offense _and_ defense, unlike some stars), but she was also very well guarded. Holy Cross did an excellent job against her, with solid man-to-man coverage and consistently well-timed and effective help, but instead of giving them the credit they deserve, people who didn't watch the game instead choose to take Geno's words at face value. You could argue that she and the rest of the team should have found ways to get her better looks, but why? This isn't Caitlin Clark's Iowa, and Paige Bueckers isn't UConn's only high-level scoring threat. If teams want to throw all of their defensive effort against one player like Holy Cross did, the rest of the team needs to make them pay for that choice. The only reason that game was close at halftime is because the rest of the team couldn't buy a bucket. _That_ was the struggle this team needed to have, _that_ was the lesson they needed to learn - that there will be times when Paige can't save them, so they better learn to save themselves.

Caitlin was fortunate to play for Iowa where she was far and away the best player on the team. Paige is not much more than another cog in the wheel at UConn. Paige is surrounded by the highest level gifted teammates and a coach that is happy to utilize them over Paige. It is the same issue for players at South Carolina.
@stuksy4321Ай бұрын
There are some players like Bird, Magic, Curry, that put teams on their back in college and went super far. UConn is like UK was where "superteams" are a normal thing. Non-Blue Bloods, and Mid Majors excelling is such a cool thing to see, but rarely do you get to see them actually go all the way, but that doesn't negate greatness, despite what many in those programs might think.

Not true. He tells her time and again to score at will. She is the one passing up an open shot and passing to KK Arnold on the 3 point line where she is shooting 17% from the arc. Makes no since. The problem with this current generation of basketball is that scoring is valued over all other facets of the game. Everyone forgets, Paige was the IT FACTOR in WCBB before she injured her knee summer of 22' and missed the entire 22'-23' season. She was "IT" because of her ALL AROUND game, not because she was shooting 3's from 30 FT+. She is the only WCBB to SWEEP all major WCBB awards in the same year (2021) as a FRESHMAN > AP POY, Naismith College POY, USBWA National POY, John R Wooden Award, AP 1st Team AA, USBWA 1st Team AA, WBCA Coaches AA, Nancy Lieberman Award, USBWA FOY, WBCA FOY, Big East POY, Big East FOY. When the ball goes to Paige, and they double team her, she doesn't force it, she passes the ball. And the other players are good enough to score. But there is a bit of Geno holding Paige back. I have to laugh at comments suggesting Geno is a great coach because he brings in great players. The number one key to getting great players is having the ability to successfully recruit them, because that's where great coaching starts. So the mere fact that Geno has successfully recruited great players is because he apparently has the skills and ability to evaluate them when they are younger and then bring them aboard, which should not be discounted in evaluating him, just as it should not be discounted in evaluating great coaches such as Dawn Staley. It's not an accident that excellent players come to play for these coaches; they don't just walk in the door by themselves. Relationships matter in collegiate sports, just as they do in life itself.

I agree with you on Geno although I do agree with Geno on Page and the lack of her aggressiveness. I was at Shark Beauty tournament at Barclay, she didn't have a great game at all and Sarah Strong really shined , the second unit came in during a blowout and they weren't in a good groove offensively particularly and Geno sent Strong back in and I have to say she definitely stabilized everything. Now with Azzi hurt and most likely will not play against Notre Dame and their three headed monster guards this is their biggest test thus far. Does Geno have the capability of reflection and changing his coaching style after 40 years, 1218 victories and 11 national championships is an interesting conversation. I believe anyone can change and grow but it takes a level of humility, honesty and stripping your ego from the task at hand of building a modern day approach to coaching. I am not sure because of the level of success he has had and everyone that goes to UConn expects to go to the next level and unbridled excellence. I like Paige's game and I do wish she was more aggressive because I have seen it on display and I think that is what he wants from her. When you had Brid, Moore, Stewie, Naphessa and the list goes on and on, he wants the mamba mentality but he has to recognize what he has which is why I think he put Strong back in the game during a blowout. I love your work and content. Keep shining sister. 😊❤✊🙏

He managed to take a team with only 6-7 active players to the Final 4 last year and came within a moving screen of beating the Clark-led Iowa team and going to the championship game (which Iowa lost). Many basketball experts consider that to have been one of his very best accomplishments (and he's won more games and more championships than any other Division 1 coach, women's or men's. EVER.
@quintyss1290Ай бұрын
Honestly, Paige should have stayed in Minnesota and taken 3-star players to the playoffs the way Caitlin Clark did. Building up a fan base at home is important. The same with Angel Reese; she should have stayed in Maryland. If you have a real game your credibility is real.
@wow956Ай бұрын
It's not about a new generation, it's about players having options now. Players don't have to stay put. If NIL stays in place and they don't heavy regulate it like he wants. Then talent will start moving away from the big programs from UCONN. Which is great, it's been too easy for him and maybe he's forgotten what it is to struggle.

I did not get to play high school basketball because of the coach not knowing my play. I did play three years in high school then in the spring before my senior year my knee got like an ACL stopping my playing on anything. Our football program received new coaches my sophomore. I was never great in practices. This being so the coaches did not know I never left the field except for halftime. I was in all of special teams, defense and offense. I was the full back, tackle, and yea special teams. I was not the starter on anything when choosing players. I was not second either. The HC showed his starters to the principal having the princ going ape. He shown the coach my stats in games and the next day I was a starter back to never leaving the field. Also, the coaches like you pointed on your coaches were a bit rough, as ours was a bit demanding showing us our wrong ways. I never let any of that bother me. I did what I was to do on the field. The HC hardly talked to me and when he did I never listen but I did hear what he wanted and did what was needed. I lead in sacks, TBL, and tackles, along with averaging around 150 yds and 1.5 TDs a game. Or like one game having around 140 yds and two TDs the first half. The second half I had two players zero in on me. So coaches really did not bother me. I learn the plays in practice and went from there.

YES! I'm starting to hate geno....no accountability. his dumbass plan/choices always lead to Paige getting blamed and attacked. the push and pull annoys me, second he says she needs to be more involved and the next he says she’s trying too hard to carry the team. I'm just sorry for P. I hope dallas finds a great coach.

Basketball is much bigger than the world according to Geno. He is good at what he does, but in this niche, talented women do not always progress. If Paige is the next generational talent the fans won’t see this until Paige recognizes Geno, like Swoops, lives in a bubble of their own making. DEFINE great coach- Paige should benefit with distance from this “Successful “ coach.

4:29 thats not true at all. Paige was playing unconscious in big games before her injury and before Geno puts her at 2. Thats the difference. she is better pg than any players she played against in college. She has different style but when you have a better all around player she should have the ball more.

Maybe Paige doesn’t want to be the #1 draft pick. As far as Geno I don’t like him he is a coach that wants players to do his program other than adapting his system around players. I think his players shine in spite of Geno glad CC did not go there.

Er...you do realize she scored 8 pts in the last game against Louisville, right? Paige is really good...but she is not transcendental in any way. No current player is anywhere as promising as Plum or Mitchell were...and these two were nowhere near the best of them all (we all know who).
@brianmchugh3757Ай бұрын
What a delusional statement. Paige is light years’s ahead of both Kelsey Plum & Mitchell. Both were volume shooters in college. Paige shoots at a higher percentage, scores at a higher efficiency and is a much better passer. Her stats are subdued playing in the UConn system. She will be a star in the WNBA, along the lines of a Sue Bird. Neither Plum or Mitchell have the pedigree of Bird.
@nkesejames209Ай бұрын
Why the louisville game is all ppl emphasize on she had an off shooting night geez..she played better against teams ranked higher than louisville...yall act like she has never scored more than 8 points before. Also can the comparing stop she did not have the college career they had and honestly that's fine she is not loosing any sleep.

Yadda yadda. I've heard it all before. Maybe Geno is past his sell-by date. I don't know and I don't care. You know what, though? I think that's more on the players than Geno. He doesn't pretend. They know it in advance when they come to Uconn. Some players he makes, some he breaks and some get so confused they don't know which way is up. But through it all, Geno doesn't pretend to be able to help everyone. To make it at Uconn you have to play Geno's way. And, frankly, not everybody is suited to doing that; Caitlin being a classic example. Geno didn't recruit her. Why? He told us. He didn't think she'd fit. And he was right. She wouldn't. That doesn't say anything about her, or her game, or even Geno, except he's wise enough to know he can't help every one. As for the rest, in his 40 years of coaching, Geno has been to the Final Four 23 times, including all but one of the most recent 15. That sounds like something people ought to emulate, not make light of. Yes, he's got a good program, and yes, they always get good talent. But so do others, dating all the way back to Pat Summit. Staley, Mulkey, Bluder, Ivey; you hear anybody saying they can't get talent? Yeah, I didn't think so. Last year, they were a three-seed and made it within one foul and 3 points to play for the championship. The game is certainly changing. But one thing I am certain of: The team with the most wins goes pretty far in the tournament. And Geno is the winningest coach of all.
@michaelr8032Ай бұрын
sounds like his coaching style rubs you the wrong way. Paige was top dog her freshman year, has been hurt for a while and had a great year last year and took her team to the final 4. So now you want to comment on Geno and his style of coaching? Paige is Paige ... she is awesome but her play this season isn't because of her coach, it's because of her.. let's chat in April.

Paige not keen on going to Dallas. I would play below par to not rank the number one pick. Plus Geno has the reputation - Frank Sinatra approach "I did my way"

"Uconn Basketball" is played so that the ball movement creates open shots. It does not run through one person so no Uconn player will break any NCAA records. Geno has been trying to get Paige to shoot more for 4 years. Paige is Paige. You can't judge Geno and what he says unless you have followed him for a long time. He pushes his player to be the best they can be and most (not all) players love him for that. Maybe if Paige was on a less talented team the offence would run through her and she would put up bigger numbers, however that does not mean she would be a better all around player.
