Well, despite being french, l'm not ready to switch from Metallica to Gojira as my favorite band : most of their songs are not fast, they're speed, almost the same one. In concert, it's not dance-able nor mosh-able (I saw them once, Metallica twice). Not melodic enough, not relatable enough and the voice is not as sing-able. I don't deny their technic / complex composition etc, just saying I don't feel the same emotional engagement when I listen to them as I do with Metallica and as I can't engage with their music by easily singing along nor dancing along, it's just really not in the same level of the game 😜

@giacomo28363 жыл бұрын
Same, probably already at number 1 for the lyrics and the athmosphere they create in their songs, it's not just heavy, it's like spiritually heavy.

I also had Metallica as my number one for literally years until I dove into Gojira stuff and I tell you, there's no coming back. Their songs are so unique that it's impossible not to fall in love with this band. Everything is so tight and precise and their melodic riffs and outros are simply amazing. It's a weird feeling I get from their music, it's like I feel connected with nature and more in touch with my spiritual self, and I never was spiritual before in my life. Sometimes I even medidate listening to some of their stuff.
@efecnar45703 жыл бұрын
I see your reasons man. But in my humble opinion, Metallica’s songs are much more “ear friendly”. Even their heaviest and thrashiest songs. That’s why they have such a huge community. Same case applies to Megadeth. But when I suggest someone to listen Gojira, they always say that they are irritated by the sound or the drums. A bit like St. Anger. Gojira is a kind of band that “you’ll love it if you like that subgenre”. PS: I really like St. Anger.
@AndriyVasylenko3 жыл бұрын
I see. It’s not just about being liked by the most people. Now metal is becoming new jazz. So the successors should push the boundaries and keep experimenting. And keep it just below mainstream.
@maxzubic3 жыл бұрын
Metallica is the most agressive music I listen to, so Gojira is a no for me. Also, they did not do Escape justice when they covered it. Now, I do like the Alter Bridge songs that Myles Kennedy says are inspired by Gojira.
@DrMetallius3 жыл бұрын
@@AndriyVasylenko Keeping experimenting is admirable, but I don't see how Gojira can become as synonymous with metal as Metallica are while they play the music they play. The main trait of Metallica is diversity of their music - that's how, like you said, everyone knows Metallica. That's because not only they have classic thrash albums, but also Black Album, also to a less extent Load, and Reload. Most people don't even know Metallica is a thrash metal band first and foremost. Also even their thrash albums aren't very aggressive like Slayer's, for example. Gojira has none of that. In my opinion, it will always remain a good, but niche band only for those who like listening to their subgenres.

Every 5-years some band is proclaimed "the new Metallica" and it's usually the nail in the coffin of their success because Metallica is still the new Metallica.
@crodriguez23603 жыл бұрын
I remember Disturbed being the "new" Metallica. Not even close. Gojira is not even close. No band right now is close to being what Metallica was in the 80's when they exploded. Times are different now. No band right now is close to being Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue etc.
@crodriguez23603 жыл бұрын
Not to mention Metallica came out when thrash speed or whatever you want to call it metal was starting out. That's another reason they are special. Just listened to a few clips of Gojira to get an idea and they don't sound like anything new.
@TonyMetal3 жыл бұрын
@@crodriguez2360 I agree with you on the Metallica part. But I believe Gojira is a very unique band. Calling them "nothing new" is just not true. They have a lot of unique aspects. Metallica on the other hand was nothing new even at their peak, they basically took influence (to the point some people call it plagiarism) from a ton of less known thrash bands and made their success out of that. Still the most popular metal band ever but definitely not because of being something new or unique.
@crodriguez23603 жыл бұрын
@@TonyMetal Let me rephrase the nothing new part. Yes Metallica wasn't the only thrash band around at the time but that kinda of music was newer. Music style like Gojira has been around for way longer. Yes they may be unique but from the few songs Ive heard they sound like any band that has that type of singing and music. I don't know what band or style of metal will be new or different in the future. To me one band that stands out as unique is Tool. Wish they had put out an album or 2 before their last album.
@donavonhoward1143 жыл бұрын
@@crodriguez2360 The problem with your assessment is that Gojira was one of the first bands to play their style of Metal. Gojira goes back to the late 90's. They started out a Death Metal/groove metal band, and became something else over time. You should listen to their first 4 albums, because those are the real definition of what Gojira is supposed to be. Specifically The Link, From Mars To Sirius, and The Way Of All Flesh. Terra Incognita is my favorite Gojira album, but that album might not appeal to everyone. The last 3 Gojira albums are awesome, but they aren't as intense as the first 4 Gojira albums.

Gojira might never need a guitar solo, but I just wish Per Nilsson from Meshuggah lays down his amazing fusion solos on one of their future records. I really hope for this collaboration.

I think that there can't be another Metallica anymore. Nothing against Gojira, they are an amazing band. The music industry isn't the same it was in the 80-90s. For Gojira to be the next Metallica it would have to have similar kind of effect on the music scene and to draw numbers similar to Metallica. For Gojira to do this is nearly impossible. Metal was really big and fast growing in the 80-90s and even that popularity cannot match the popularity, even slightly, of todays rap or pop. It's sad... but true...

Andriy you're a legend but Lars is not a bad drummer. Everyone knows he's not the most technical or precise drummer out there but what he does for the band suits really well and his drumming in the 80's was pretty revolutionary in the thrash genre and many modern day drummers acknowledge this too

Gojira lack of solos is what makes Gojira so Gojira
@daralenoach3 жыл бұрын
@@tizianopertile1040 I'm not asking them to make every song into Hangar 18 or something 😂 just a couple of lead bits here and there like Meshuggah do. I think personally that a sonically higher end aspect could add to their songs sometimes. I get what you mean though about that being their style.

they can solo pretty well, too. listen to their cover of Escape

They don’t really need them. The riffs and teamwork deserves all the focus. But some experiments with classic solos would be curious

Let's say Metallica is one of those "once in a generation" bands like Beatles and Zeppelin. Quite frankly, I don't think any metal band would ever be as big as Metallica. Gojira is very respected in metal community and currently they are my favorite band, but I don't think they'll ever be as big as Metallica. They are too heavy to be liked by non-metalheads.
@crodriguez23603 жыл бұрын
100% correct.
@moonlightequilibrium3 жыл бұрын
i really like how you described how its impossible for there to be a "new metallica." i wasn't convinced at the beginning because the paths of both bands dont exactly line up, but after realizing the metal landscapes are extremely different 30+ years apart, i agree that gojira seems to be a close modern equivalent.
@dmitryowens3 жыл бұрын
Are you kidding? To be an heir to Metallica, they'd have to have great (or even good) vocals, good guitar solos (do Gojira even have guitar solos? I can't remember any in the songs from them I've heard), and memorable riffs and songs. They're more like a B grade imitation of Chaos A.D.-era Sepultura, but with weaker songs.
@desubokudawanano3 жыл бұрын
Victim has 2 solos in it and silvera has 1
@dmitryowens3 жыл бұрын
@@desubokudawanano Are those songs from the new album? Metal bands should have solos on every song, or at least the majority of them - riffs and rhythms drive a song, but solos are the icing on the cake. That's one of the main reasons why St. Anger wasn't well-received by most Metallica fans - if it had solos, it would've been a more popular record.

So for the first time in a long time, I am sitting down to write a long comment on an Andriy Vasylenko video. I watched the whole video this time, and I don't see much of the resemblance in the styles and timelines between Metallica and Gojira. So I will make the case for another band. Volbeat. Kill 'Em All = The Strength/The Sound/The Songs. Volbeat was simply riffing all over the place, and many of the songs sounded similar to each other. They were just trying to make music, like Metallica was back in the day. Ride The Lightning = Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil. This was the album where Volbeat diversified their music and found their signature sound. Master Of Puppets = Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood. Their best album to date, even according to Michael Poulsen himself. Also the album that "put them on the map in the metal world". Shortly after the album was released, Michael's dad, who was a big influence on the band, passed away. So it's a similar loss to Metallica with Cliff Burton. ...And Justice For All = Beyond Hell/Above Heaven. Lots of new elements on Volbeat's music were introduced here, kind of making it more complex. Also, nowadays they tend to avoid playing most of the songs live even though they were big hits, similar to what Metallica did for a long time with ...And Justice For All. Black Album = Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies. Volbeat took on a more mainstream sound when Rob Caggiano joined the band. (By the way, an album review of OG&SL calls it "Volbeat's Black Album".) Load/ReLoad = Seal The Deal & Let's Boogie and Rewind, Replay, Rebound. Two albums that were clearly trying to appeal to the mainstream. The accompanying tours also saw the band ignore most of their material from before OG&SL, and Metallica kind of did that on the Load/ReLoad tours, ignoring most of pre-Black Album stuff. St. Anger = Possible eighth album. Michael said that he is revisiting a lot of the old material but with a new twist; it's probably going to be more thrashy than any of the first few albums. He also says he doesn't want to do another album like Rewind, Replay, Rebound. I think James and/or Metallica had a similar mindset with the transition between Load/ReLoad and St. Anger. You could also draw an analogy from James's rehab which limited his time with the band to the quarantine that pretty much put Volbeat out of action as one member lives on a different continent from the rest. I still think Volbeat deserves to be the next Metallica.

Load and Reload have A LOT of musical value. The last two Volbeat Albums were 98% uninspired bullcrap that is predictable as f.
