This is TEST number 5 in my video series Is Google Always Listening!
This is a muted microphone test that was suggested by a viewer in the comments. In these tests when try to find out whether giant tech companies like Facebook, Google, or Microsoft are always recording our microphones in order to target ads to us. Targeted advertising is big business, so watch to find out whether your microphone is always listening even when you think it's muted.

If you mute the microphone with the button on it the microphone is pretty much of so it's not up to the apps to decide if they still should listen or not. Therefore you should try to mute your microphone in the windows settings to see if Microsoft really disables any audio input when you tell it to.

agree.. The mute button on a microphone like you have, is a hardware cut off switch, so completely bypasses any settings that could be ignored by Microsoft, Google, Amazon, etc.. It is like unplugging the Mic completely.. Using the Mute in Windows Sound Settings COULD still be ignored like you posed as topic.. ;)

I don't want to be that guy, but there may be a difference between hardware and software mute features. Obviously if the mic hardware actually does disable audio, Windows wont be able to hear anything, but if in Windows you use the built in volume control to mute and it doesn't then that would be the problem. Wow, just randomly remembered this video and my comment. 2 years too late but I replied to who I could, and to clarify I was trying to say that muting the mic with the button may not do anything at all as it is hardware based.

Isn't there a chance that since you read off all the ads in the control it hears you saying "car, Lexus, Ford, progressive" etc. It's not like it knows your reading it off the screen so it might keep doing car or insurance ads cause you keep mentioning it reading the ads already there. I think a better test would try not to say much of anything near your mic or phone (I know that's more difficult than I make it out to be) but maybe when doing the control just browse quietly, don't say headlines or what the ads on the screen are just take mental notes or in post do a tally then ramble about a topic clearly out loud then see if the ads change to what you talked about.

1. it may take time for the information gathered to be sent. 2. there are so many other advertisement places you can look. (such as youtube ads!) 3. they are always watching and listening. [ 3 ] stories of a little proof- 1. my husband went to a fast food place called Cook Out, paid by card, next day he kept getting ads for Cook Out while watching his youtube feed. 2. we have Netflix. I would always talk about how they could improve the viewing process. example- giving a "skip intro" option for shows, and other changes to make the viewing ore pleasant, easier and convenient. within a few weeks (sooner for some suggestions) my requested changes were made. started talking about buying a sprinter van ONCE! ads for them keep popping up for days on my computer before I actually started googling them. 3. I was just listening to a local radio station the other morning in my car. they were talking about people storming area 51 and aliens and whatnot. a woman calls in sharing about her dad and how his was something like a "blind airline attendant" of some sort. they would blind the workers on these private planes so they didn't know where they were going until they got there or something like that and they wouldn't know who was riding the plane. she starts talking about her dad and how he went there. and then she started getting into what he saw (unfortunately I didn't hear Exactly what she said because I was backing into my driveway and my six year old was trying to talk to me while I was trying my best to listen to what she was saying (I was very intrigued!) she was in the middle of her sentence WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN- this LOUD A^ POP came through the speakers! (we all got silent.) then the radio hosts started talking about "what was that?" "did you just hear that loud pop?" and they were just so creeped out about it. the call in woman started talking again: "yeah. I don't know what that was. I heard it too." radio host: "that's the government listening in on us. (them laughing) you start talking about what your dad saw and we get a loud pop on the phone right when you're about to tell us.(still chuckling in dismay)." the woman starts to talk again when her line gets cut off. they go to commercial and come back and DO NOT MENTION ANOTHER WORD ABOUT IT or ALIENS or AREA 51 AGAIN.-- LIKE WFT MAN! are you serious right now. everyone heard it, you talked about it, then when sh^ gets real you abruptly stop!?? the whole thing is just eerie as f^.. I personally had my own experience with it. I recently bought a set of tires for my truck. i was looking for what to get before i got them, so I've been getting adds for tires. Just today, i got fed up with it and out loud, said, "why do I keep getting adds for tires, I already bought them." I didn't refresh the page or do anything and the tire add changed. I decided to test it, so I said, "I need tires now. i just bought this car and it needs tires and I need to find some." Sure enough, a couple seconds later, it changes to a tire add again. Also, prior to the incident, I disabled my all in one desktop's microphone and this still happened.

Once me and my classmates were making thank you cards to a guest. My friend wanted to make a pikachu card, so he opened his laptop and said the words "I'm gonna make a pikachu or Pokemon theme card". And he went on google and the first thing that popped up when he searched 'pika' WAS 'PIKACHU THANK YOU CARDS'

Muting the mic isn't the answer... If they are listening, they need a mic... I was talking to someone about Bosch Twin wipers in a hardware store a few weeks ago. I never used my phone while there. It was in my pocket the whole time. Later when I got home, I was looking at Facebook and there it was... An advertisement from Amazon about Bosch Twin wipers..!!!!! I really believe that Facebook and co are listening to our conversations...

@@ricobonimusic I have tried some of the tests he did. I live in Europe, so I don't know if privacy regulation is different than in the US. I could not replicate his results. I didn't get any ads that were close to what I was talking about. The GPS thing I mentioned however, is true. If I visit a shop and my gps on my phone is on, I will get messages regarding the shop or products available in the shop. But if my gps is off, and my mobile internet is off, I don't get any messages. Don't get me wrong, I know Google and Facebook do a lot of things against privacy regulations, and they have both been fined multiple times by the EU. I know they sell data without my knowledge or consent. I know they store almost everything. I just don't use Facebook much anymore. I use Google as my phone is an android phone, so I can't avoid that. I'm very cautious with what I do using their platform. The GDPR in the EU helps with controlling what an app is allowed to do or what a site can do.
