I'm going to give my 2 cents here. I don't think Grand Seiko is chasing after Rolex any more. I think that part of their overall plan has been, gone, and succeeded - they've shown people that a Seiko can be luxurious, and compete in the same price bracket as The Crown (at retail, at least). Now they're aiming higher. The improvements in technology, design, fit and finishing, together with the increased costs, suggest they're aiming for the next bracket of luxury - the JLC/Breguet bracket of £10-25k. After that, GS will have Vacheron/Audemars/Lange/Patek in their sights (probably in about 10 years) until, ultimately, the Micro Artists studio end up turning out extremely small batches of extremely high-end, handmade luxury watches to compete against Journe or Gronefeld. Don't forget, Seiko's ultimate aim was always to beat the Swiss by being the best. For GS, it's a long game. Personally, it's one I think they're winning.

Seiko already has their Credor line to compete with the Vacheron/Audemars/Lange/Patek market. That line is also much more exclusive in that you can only get them in Japan.
@neilmartin7776

@@c2pascual which is sort of my point. I believe Grand Seiko is going to move into that bracket and be seen as the Japanese Patek. Credor is the creation of the Micro Artists studio, and i believe that what we see from them now is only the start. Credor (Micro Artists) will eventually push on to be Seiko's answer to Journe - incredibly rare, incredibly refined, incredibly expensive and incredibly desirable collector's pieces. More so than they are now.

Loved the Alfa Romeo comment 😊. For me grand Seiko is still a great choice but they are walking dangerously towards a price territory where the relevance of quality and finishing starts to fade against brand recognition and status.and that is a dangerous game for them as i don't think they are there yet. If we go to the street and we ask people for 5 luxury watch brands, i would be surprised if Grand Seiko shows up in the list... at all... Grand Seiko would do well by staying in the price bracket they are and not push much higher, so i can still get one! 😅😅

Good comment but I disagree. They have been there for a while, and when I mean there, their craftmanship is (has been) well above the one of Rolex. The only difference is that folks weren't aware of GS because of 1. Rolex/Luxury Swiss brands marketing machine 2. Swiss watch snobs discounted the brand because it was owned by Seiko (mass producer watchmaker). Mass opinion based on marketing does not equate to quality. At least in my opinion. Great video! Fresh to see a watch You Tube channel being objective about Rolex.

@@kaderdicko First of all, thanks for your polite answer. Nice to find people that can disagree so nicely. 🙂 Secondly, i agree with you. I really like Grand Seiko. I admire the brand since I read their history and their part on the accuracy contests. My comment come of course from my personal opinion and i could be wrong (i am wrong more than anyone I know) but i have the feeling that of the people that buy Rolex. A big percentage does it for investment and another big percent does it to "show off", just for reputation. And only a small percentage buys them because they genuinely like the watches. The first two groups will not look at Grand Seiko. If GS prices keep creeping up they will price out the enthusiast that like the brand and the watches. I am just saying that they could land in a position where the people like me who like the brand cannot afford them, and the people who can afford them don't look at them because they don't have enough "oomph", reducing their market to a small group of people who can afford them and know enough to value them. I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

@@jonathanblanco3100 The attraction to Rolex for conspicuous consumption is legitimate - they are known the world over for being expensive watches. Most of the people who aren't into watches, know of Rolex. They have become popular with people who's income and asset levels are not high wealth... in fact, the entire industry is marketing en masse to the aspirational people... those who want to belong to the world of luxury. If it becomes too mainstream, or available it loses that. This is why top brands like Rolex, Patek, AP, Vacheron, Hermes, LV, they do not just make their products available in huge quantities to every person who show up with the cash. This is all marketing... veblen goods, do some research on it. Rolex clients are not supposed to be Toyota Corolla owners who work retail and live at home with their parents, it's supposed to be high income people who own several watches from the brand, who live an upscale and expensive lifestyle. Someone with a $20,000 watch SHOULD be owning at $200,000 car and living in a $2 million dollar house. Just my observations.

I both agree and disagree, Jonathan. You’re right that regular Joes couldn’t name Grand Seiko - they’re more of an enthusiasts brand. However, as a GS owner, the value proposition is truly there at current prices. The finishing makes Tudor and Omega look like pre school level work.

As a recent GS owner I am glad my watch is not one of the crowd. I personally did not buy it for brand recognition or investment but rather the incredible Spring Drive technology and the perfect and meticulous finish. At my workplace (a sea of Rolex, Heuer, Omega, Cartier, Hermes owners, etc.) no one wears a GS and I am perfectly fine with that. I am content in knowing this US$8000+ watch was careful assembled from start to finish by one person in the GS studio in Japan will provide me with many years of reliable accurate daily service. I am certainly not a brand snob. I would buy a Sinn, Longines, or Heuer watch in a heartbeat if a suitable model appealed to me.

Guess what , it actually had to be a , not just pretty to look at and talked-about. And eventually , even those who wouldn’t buy one, but would buy one of the legacy exotic brands after the NSX appeared , unquestionably benefited from having those manufacturers be compelled to get out of the Stone Age.

It was after lockdown that he decided to splurge a little bit on watches as he felt like he wasn't getting any younger to enjoy his passion. Through the years of owning a tag, brietling, and an omega, he got a Grand Seiko GMT Mt Iwate. It was his most expensive watch, and we aren't well off enough for him to splurge on a rolex he liked. But it was that grand seiko that got me interested in watches. The sheer detail and polishing of the zaratsu technique is truly breathtaking. But as we know branding is even more important than quality to the mass market of luxury watch buyers. GS is popular in fora like this because they are populated with enthusiasts. However I also think that there is a slowly increasing number of luxury watch buyers who are becoming increasingly informed and educated about watches. And when rolex are so difficult to buy, well it’s a golden opportunity to flaunt your superior wares. And GS have taken that opportunity and then some.

And while I do like a lot of Grand Seiko designs but they are still missing on the fly microadjustment clasps except on their 43mm+ dive watches. The new Tentagraph is a $12,000 watch and it doesn't have tooless micro adjust. There are microbrands like Zelos, and AliExpress brands like San Martin that have this feature on their bracelets for less than $1000. Sometimes less than $300. Even more embarrassing is that the Regular Seiko SNR033 has an on the fly adjustable clasp, a 5R66 Spring Drive movement and is made from titanium all for $4000. If Tudor and Omega can do it, why can't Grand Seiko? Dumb rant over.

In the charming town of Watchville, where time seemed to move at its own pace, a group of watch enthusiasts gathered at the local cafe, sipping on espressos and discussing their beloved timepieces. Among them was Ethan, a jovial watch collector with a penchant for playful banter. As the conversation veered towards Seiko's move to create a luxury range called "Grand Seiko," Ethan couldn't help but wear a mischievous grin. "Grand Seiko, huh? Is it just me, or does it sound like they're trying a bit too hard?" he chuckled. His fellow enthusiasts raised their eyebrows, intrigued by Ethan's misgivings. "Come on now, Ethan. Grand Seiko watches are known for their craftsmanship and precision," said Tom, a devoted Grand Seiko fan. "Oh, I don't doubt their quality," Ethan replied, "but let's be honest here. Slapping 'Grand' in front of 'Seiko' isn't exactly the pinnacle of creativity, is it? It's like calling a basic burger joint 'Grand Burger' and expecting it to become a five-star restaurant." The table erupted in laughter, but Tom wasn't going to let this slide. "Well, it does convey the idea of elevated elegance and luxury," he retorted. Ethan leaned back, raising an eyebrow. "Elevated, you say? I'd rather put my money into timepieces with names that sound like they belong in a fairy tale! Patek Philippe, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, H. Moser & Cie, A. Lange & Söhne, Vacheron Constantin... now those are names that scream luxury and class!" The group nodded, acknowledging the allure of the names Ethan mentioned. "Exactly! There's something captivating about those names that evoke dreams of timeless elegance and sophistication," said Grace, a collector of vintage watches. Ethan continued with a grin, "But 'Grand Seiko'? It's like they ran out of ideas and just went, 'Let's throw in a fancy adjective and call it a day.' I mean, couldn't they have come up with something more enchanting?" As the discussion playfully unfolded, they all agreed that while Grand Seiko watches were exceptional timepieces, the name left something to be desired in terms of evoking a sense of luxury and allure. "So, when you see a Patek Philippe or a Vacheron Constantin, it's like stepping into a world of sophistication and heritage," Ethan said. "But 'Grand Seiko'? It's more like a well-dressed cousin who's trying a bit too hard to fit in at the fancy gala." The conversation continued, filled with light-hearted teasing and shared laughter. In the end, they all cherished their love for watches, recognizing that while the name might raise an eyebrow, what truly mattered was the passion and appreciation they had for the artistry and craftsmanship that adorned their wrists. As they bid farewell to the cafe, their timepieces faithfully ticking, they knew that regardless of the name, the magic of horology would forever enchant their hearts.

Grand Seiko is in a league of its own and unrivaled. It is likely to stay that way. It has taken on stereotypical Japanese planning style; 20 years at a time. With that R&D commitment investment to quality wristwatches, you can see the results. The Spring Drive development to where it is today is a testimony to that! Instead of reacting to what other watch brands are doing then upgrade the existing movements to meet or slightly exceed the competition, GS have proactively set the bar higher in every way leaving the competition to decide what they want to do to rival. There was no necessity to bring out Spring Drive 5-day Evolution 9 series 9RA2 movement as the 3-Day 9R65 movement has already set a standard into the stratosphere that no one else has reached so, why go a bit further? Well GS can and have displayed what is possible. There is a significant price difference between the two as well as the specification that is probably as different as a Corvette C8 with the standard Stingray 1LT and the Z51 package to a 3LT model versions. Where does Rolex come in to play with GS Spring Drive? It does not and nowhere near! I hope GS take it further and produce a Spring Drive Annual and/or Perpetual Calendar version that will set the cat among The Pigeon to blow everyone else away again!

I'm definitely a huge fan of GS. I like them better than Rolex. It's more exclusive cause they make less watches. Their dials are better, more innovative, Human hands actually touch every watch lol. Better movements. I don't own a rolex at the moment because I've boycotted because of their poor AD customer service. I did purchase my wife a rolex that the AD offered me, but I don't care to personally own one. If I did, I would choose milgauss, yachmaster, or rootbeer. The rest don't speak to me. However. Many GS watches jump out to me. I have Snowflake and Peacock. Next one will be the new Lake Suwa

I have 2 grand seiko watches, the white Birch spring drive (SLGA009) and the “frosty” SLGH013 with a hi-beat movement. Both look great. Both at the high end of the range. Highly recommend the spring drive, 5 day power reserve and I can wear it for 2 weeks without it gaining a second. I prefer the power indicator on the back. The hi-beat was gaining 11s a day when I purchased it. Sent it back to be recalibrated under warranty. After waiting 2.5 months, told it will take another 2 months for it to be returned. Not ideal. Hopefully it will come back only gaining a few seconds a day. I will be happy if they can achieve that.

This video brings to mind a previous video on the No Time to Die 007 Seamaster. Mr. Hands stated something along the lines of Omega finally catching up with Rolex by introducing a Seamaster with an MSRP of $9000 plus, similar to the Submariner.Grand Seiko must have been watching too, as charge the same price for a chronograph as Rolex does for a Daytona. Alas, there is always the aftermarket, which seems an increasingly reasonable place to purchase watches.

Have a GS divers 200m spring drive. The case finishing is incredible, the spring drive movement is mesmerizing. The bracelet is great, the divers extension is perhaps overly complicated, but it offers more than adequate micro adjustment. I can't say enough good about GS, and the great part is you can walk into an AD and actually buy one (waiting on the "list" at our AD for a GMT). Ahhh Rolex Rolex everywhere so now can we have some clicks?! GS are great, I have an SLGA013 with the new generation spring drive movement in it. It’s more innovative and better finished than a Rolex. However if I had to have one watch only forever. I’d rather have a Rolex than it. Why? There’s no micro adjust in the bracelet, it’s not as comfortable on wrist, it doesn’t feel as balanced on wrist. Rolex feel so planted and right on wrist and not many other brands get close cos the bracelets are poor and it really matters/notices when you switch between watches. The GS is the best at telling the time, it’s the best at being shiny. But as a complete package it doesn’t have the same feeling on wrist. Rolex are boring but even with the two you’re comparing here. The Skyflake would be a terrible “only watch.” I actually had one and sold it, it’s a dress watch but it sits too high on the wrist to be a good dress watch. It comes with a leather strap and no screw down crown and so it doesn’t work as a sports watch. It has a lovely dial but doesn’t sit as either a good dress watch or a good sports watch. It feels like a bad attempt at both at the same time. I sold my Skyflake exactly for this reason, I had better dress watches, and better sports watches. It never gave me a reason to want to put it on in the morning. The allure of a fancy dial wains quickly and then you’re left with a pretty bad watch to wear objectively speaking for the money with the Skyflake. It’s a bad dress watch that looks a bit sporty, but isn’t. Even the snowflake you mention, once the allure of that lovely dial wears off. What are left with? A truly amazing watch on a stinkingly bad bracelet. Even the new generation models for 9k plus like the night birch and the lake Suwa etc, no adjustments in the bracelets at such crazy money? They can innovate the best watch head for the money in the entire watch world but seem to not give a damn that you can’t make it fit well.
