Present trunks was fighting buu at a younger age then when future trunks was fighting the androids. Plus buu was way stronger then the androids. He also saw everyone around him turn into chocolate then got lost in a different dimension and came back. He 100% has more potential if he keeps training

The reason future trunks is so popular and seems to have so much potential is because he had to grow up in a future where there was no way out and had to fight very early on in life so he had so much more experience then people give him credit for he had to face the androids by himself in his future and then had to deal with babidi and Dabura by himself and then goku black till he had to go to the past

If I recall trunks didn’t have to fight much in the future gohan did trunks was still being trained and the only fight we see him partake in before coming to the past he doesn’t win it….I’d definitely say gohan Trained him ALOT MORE and future trunks faced more loss but we have no evidence to him fighting more

Okay read the manga in the goku black arc it tells why he has god ki technically. Lot of diffrent stuff happens in the manga. Gohan fights kefla solo. Look up the manga chapters online

I'd like to point out that in the manga Future Trunks was already a Super Saiyan when Future Gohan started training him as him transforming after Future Gohan's death was something added to The History of Trunks TV special to make his transformation more cinematic! However, the manga version makes more sense as Trunks was able to achieve his Super Saiyan form in relatively peaceful times, yet the anime tries to suggest Future Trunks struggled to achieve it in a timeline as hellish as the one he grew up in (basically I'm saying Future Trunks had plenty of opportunity to become enraged, & while him transforming after Future Gohan's death is more cinematic, it makes it seem like his counterpart has greater potential)! The only way it makes sense is to consider Future Bulma was against Future Trunks fighting due to not wanting to lose him (his training under Future Gohan was done in secret)! However, Future Trunks is shown to be able to fly & is shown fighting in his base form. Thus, it has its flaws! I agree, Trunks has great potential, but I'd say Future Trunks does, too! Also, Future Trunks' Super Saiyan Rage form only exists in the DBS anime continuity, as in the manga he just uses Super Saiyan 2!

For real. (Future) Trunks has always had to work really hard for his power...Gohan just gets angry enough to get crazy power ups. I have no idea how future Gohan never got strong enough to beat the andriods because it goes against everything we know about his character and how his power ups have always worked. You say that Future Trunks always had to "work hard" for his power, but that same logic applied to Future Gohan, who had also had many zenkai boosts as well as a killer instinct and enough rage to assist him yet that didn't work out for him. Future Trunks drastically exceeds Future Gohan in potential even at a much younger age and hes proven it.

The thing is that the rage that future trunks developed came with a great cause, he was the only survivor, and if we talk about the fact that in present timeline he learnt ssj at such a young age then we also have to look at the fact he had a training rival/buddy and his dad to train with, that being said goten was the youngest ssj ever so he has more potential yet he has never been given the spot light, no hate to trunks and this is just my assumption

Gohan is without a shadow of a doubt the character with the most potential. His potential is insane he can fight for a day or two and go from getting beat the fuck up by piccolo to compete with Goku blue from, fight along side golden freeza and even arguably out preforming golden freeza against dyspo and with his beast form. Present Trunks just don’t got that dog in him. He hasn’t been thru the same hardships as future Trunks & he has so much Z-Fighters to rely on that I doubt he would ever push himself to be that great

Actually the rage form is confirmed to have been a form of spirit bomb because of all of the survivors shouting "YOU CAN DO IT TRUNKS!" so no it's not just an inheritable power by the present trunks but something he or anyone else for that matter can just learn from goku anytime they want.

The only reason he had the rage form was because of all of the people chanting "YOU CAN DO IT TRUNKS!" Because in essence it's a spirit bomb because all those people were giving him their energy. The Rage form was a manifestation of losing everyone in his timeline, namely future Gohan. Present Trunks will likely never be able to unlock this ability, unless everyone in the current timeline dies which simply will not happen.

The manga gave us an explanation (ironic since the rage form never appears). Apprentice kais are given special powers that are taken away once their training ends. Since Shin and Elder Kai died while training Trunks, there was nobody to revoke his power. In the manga, this translated to a healing ability, but in the anime, he got the rage form.

It just occurred to me but Trunk's rage mode might have been like a very incomplete version of Gohan's beast transformation. It is likely that all human saiyan hybrids have access to the beast form.

Same person but different lifestyle. Present Trunks has grown up without little to no trauma. Future Trunks has seen tragedy after tragedy his whole life. It’s this life experience that has made him consume so much pain and loss that he has the potential to reach levels that I think present day trunks can only dream of

I still think that Goten arguably has more potential than Trunks. Plus, using Future Trunks as a scale for isn't a fair comparison because they went through different experiences, and ultimately Future Trunks has more of a drive to get stronger than Present Trunks.

I think Saiyans can turn SS more easily by seeing other Saiyans turn SS. Same applies with channeling God ki in a way. Future Trunks saw that Goku and Vegeta can turn SSB, and he learned to harness some of that when turning SS Rage.
