There are widespread recommendations about total cholesterol that less than 200 mg/dL is ideal. However, when talking about primary prevention, many large population based cohort studies say there is possibly more risk for mortality in having low cholesterol (less than 200) compared to higher cholesterol (greater than 200). The problem with this is that none of this discussion is contextualized for people as individuals. The bigger problem is that many people get put on cholesterol lowering medications based off this one marker of total cholesterol.
