Keep in mind, Home Free not only signs, but they are the band. So here we have Kenny being accompanied by a purely vocal band. They don't have to run the song. This was an amazing performance where, according to that end clip, Kenny sought them out. God Bless that man.

In a Storytime with Tim during a concert, Tim Foust talked about how they almost got to perform this song with Kenny on the Tonight Show, but their plane kept getting delayed. They finally hired a private jet (which costs a lot of money that they really didn't have at the time), but they still weren't in time to do the show. However, they got to hang out with Kenny in the green room for hours, listening to him telling stories. Kenny seemed to really like these guys. They also did a cover of The Gambler, as a tribute to Kenny after he passed. RIP, Kenny Rogers. Also, American Pie is a very long song. Don McLean did the first and last verses, plus sang lead on every chorus. The HF guys each took one verse. I thought it was pretty evenly distributed. HF always makes an effort to showcase their collaborators.
@DravenGal

I guess I'm a product on my generation, but every time I hear "American Pie," I think of Weird Al's "The Saga Begins." Which, I have read, has happened to Don McLean himself in concert, because his kids played Weird Al's version SO much...

Also, Kenny repeatedly tried to talk about the guys at that show, but was continuously interrupted and led to other topics by the host. He REALLY wanted to give them a shout out, but wasn't allowed to.

@@carinalindberg7377 How bizarre and rude! I wonder why they didn't allow it. Lame!
@carinalindberg7377

@@DravenGal It is my understanding that because they were late they were seen as somewhat not interested in being on the show and because they were "only backup" to Kenny, invited by him rather than the show, they were not what the show was interested in anyway. It was quite bizarre because Kenny really did his best to bring them up repeatedly and was cut off and steered away every single time. Still, the guys consider it being over or there best experiences because they got to hang out with Kenny and he shared some very useful experiences with them, including that it's far better to have a slow growing career and journey to fame because it builds a far more solid and dedicated fan base and that is worth more than anything else. The Fries showed him to be correct by offering to pay for the private jet they rented to get there, after which they set up a Go-Fund-Me and we collected more than enough to cover the cost. ❤️🥰🙏

I think they lifted Kenny up in every way possible. They had his back, and shone the light on him. It isn't easy singing subtle so the star can shine, and still have perfection in the vocals.

After Kenny passed away, Home Free did a tribute to him by covering his classic "The Gambler". In a word, it's amazing. Please do that song at some point. Love how into this collaboration you guys were! You're clearly fans of Kenny (who wouldn't be? xD) and he was amazing in this number. And that bit at the end where you took notice of "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys and mentioned it's on the list? Please please please bump it to near the top of that list!

This is a very old black gospel tune, not a Kenny Rogers song per se. The background vocals by #homefree that drive the tune, with their swells and adlibs, bring out the gospel-choir vibe. It's one of the things that sets HF apart from other a cappella groups. This is of my top 5 HF songs. And I think Kenny looks beautiful.

What an honor and blessing that Home Free has had the chance to sing with the great legend Kenny Rogers at the request of Kenny Rogers himself. While maintaining the respect and appreciation of Kenny Rogers, this sounded wonderful again. The voices fit together so well. With the great vocal percussion added, this was perfect. What a memory !! R.I.P. Kenny Rogers🙏

Kenny sounded great for 75! Home Free did the Gambler as a tribute to him when he passed. I thought he looked great for 75. He has a totally different voice than they do. He’s got a strong gravely voice where Home Free are tremendous vocalists. They were great in back up. They also sing with Alabama (Christmas in Dixie), Oak Ridge boys, (Don McLean). Some great collaborations. They have great Christmas music. Some funny, some serious. Try Mary Did You Know, O Holy Night, Do You Hear What I Hear (Adam arranged it and it’s fabulous). 😍

This song was one of the tracks on Kenny's last album. Home Free are masters at collaborating without upstaging the artists they work with. You mentioned the collaboration with Don Maclane. American Pie is a much longer song. Don sang the first and last verses.By splitting up the verses they could cover all of it for the special 50th Anniversary rerecording of the song without cutting any of the verses. Glad you enjoyed it.

Awesome job. Amazing how good Kenny's voice is here. So many of the artists I listened to as a child (yep, grew up listening to his songs), I hear them sing now and their voice has not aged well. Kenny's voice was beautiful and very much as I remember. Great job with Home Free and this collaboration, this was so much fun to watch (so many smiles) and to see you'all geeking out about Kenny. I also look forward to you reacting to the Gambler.

Kenny had said in an interview or commentary somewhere I saw, that he was initially going to ask Pentatonix to record with him at first. That’s when his son’s teacher suggested he ask Home Free to record with him. After he searched KZbin, like he said here, he was rightly impressed. The Home Freeness guys were totally honored and obviously enjoyed every second. Would love to see you all react to their video with the Oak Ridge Boys singing “Elvira”. Talk about having fun! They all hit it off very well. The Oak Ridge Boys, after getting to know Home Free said they reminded them of themselves when they were Home Free’s age.

Back when Kenny Rogers was with his group The First Edition, they had a TV show "Rollin' on the River" in the early 1970s. It was filmed in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). I don't know if it aired at all in the U.S. I remember being kinda jealous 'cuz a classmate had gone to a taping with her boyfriend. After Kenny's passing, Home Free did a rendition of "The Gambler" as an homage to him.

Well, you can take Home Free out and there would be nothing more than Kenny singing all on his own with no background or backup at all so it's not 75% Kenny, it's just 75% of Kenny singing lead. It was after all his song, his album and his idea to have them on it. But if we were to take each guy and time their parts then Kenny would have the least time. Kenny, btw, loved Home Free and he supported them as much as he could whenever he could.
