As recession fears mount on Wall Street and inflation remains well above the Fed's 2% target, some of the top commentators in markets, business, and economics have been sounding off on just how bad they think the next downturn might be - and how far stocks may have to fall. I need ideas and advice on what investments to make to set myself up for retirement

Inflation is gradually going to become part of us and due to that fact any money you keep in cash or in a low-interest account declines in value each year. Investing is the only way to make your money grow and unless you have an exceptionally high income, investing is the only way most people will ever have enough money to retire.

True, but its also true that the government that provides freedom, makes itself obsolete. Only children need to be governed and if you're an adult and still wanting somebody else to make your decisions, you should try to grow up. The political spectrum is children vs adults. The more you move towards being a grownup, the more you want autonomy.

That's pretty much what I've been thinking. Unless you can say that a candidate is a net positive, you have no reason to vote for them. Right now, by my evaluation, neither of the 2 party candidates are net positives, but there are 3rd party candidates that I think are net positive. So, I vote third party.

The FED lowered its inflation objective to less than 2% in 2012. They changed the target to a long-term average of 2% inflation. Because long-term interest rates are set at inflation plus a profit margin, the implication is lower interest rates. I consider the current rising interest rate to be a very serious issue it will cause more investors to withdraw from the market. But then despite the severe bear market, I am aware of certain investors that continue to earn over $365,000. Wish I could accomplish that.

I’m voting for Trump. But to be completely fair - Trump did nothing about the over spending in Congress leading to our ongoing deficit and ballooning national debt . In fact Trump presided over the stimulus checks (which were done by creating money) and those business loans during Covid which started inflation. Biden continued the checks and huge spending bills and a year later we saw inflation sky rocket as it all caught up. Trump is better on less business regulation and lower taxes so that’s why I’m voting for him

Voting is actually quite simple. Just vote for the one you think has a bigger heart, which is obviously not to be taken literally. ^^ In the end, the president has people advising him/her, and it's important that whoever makes the final decision has a big heart to do the right thing for the majority of the population. The hard part about voting is overcoming your own GREED...

If elephants came from woolly mammoths and they have 80 year lifespans I think it's obvious that nature has the ability to adapt generation over generation much faster than we give it credit for. Species that have over specialized will die off, as they always have. They made that decision long ago when they chose to pursue a food source in a location that nothing else was exploiting. What makes us so successful is our ability to exploit many food sources in many environments and everything like us will thrive. We have the ability to adapt to many environments and we now know those changes happen rapidly to our genetics as children conceived and born near the equator will have much darker skin than their parents no matter how pasty white they are and vice versa. To the point that people don't believe the children are theirs and have to get genetic testing done to confirm it. That is because men pass on a stronger version of the genes that are active at the moment of sperm production. That is the active form of reproduction that adapts all creatures to new environments. It's the reason behind sexual reproduction. Females are born with static eggs, the genes in them do not change. That explains why the instinct is to protect the females while the males go out and expose themselves to the dangers of the environment. Whatever chemicals or dangers that we are exposed to that activate a genetic response in us will be amplified in the children we conceive during that period of our lives. If these changes were taking place in both sides of our parents they would be too much and the child would not survive. There are even rare genetic changes that adapt to extreme pathogens like malaria that if both parents have it they can't have viable children. Thalassemia is one of them that helped peoples ancestors survive the black death. I actually had a friend that married a girl and their first child died and they found out they both had this and got divorced because of it. I have it and so do my sisters. It has health effects similar to sickle cell anemia and can vary in the severity they present. I was put on a medication once that caused me to be hospitalized because of it. I couldn't stay awake, it was like I was slipping into a coma.

@@n8works I try, I even spent an hour reading up on the current science in it to make sure it was factual. The point was that elephants and humans are two of the longest lived and slowest breeding animals on the planet and yet we adapted and thrived to ice ages that have sudden onsets where as the warming usually takes place over very long time periods comparatively. To freeze the Earth solid you simply need to alter the sun reaching the surface by very small percentages. To warm it back up after all that ice has formed that reflects light back to space is nearly impossible. It takes a cataclysmic event of a exoplanetary nature. And yet we have survived these cataclysms and these warming and cooling phases. People use fear in order to control the masses. Yea the climate will change and yes there might be some inconveniences associated with it. But cold kills far more people than warm weather does and the warmer it gets the more food will grow but if it gets too cold, nothing grows and everything dies. There was probably a period where humans lived exclusively off of the frozen remains of dead animals and by burning wood from long dead frozen forests. It may very well have been the CO2 we were producing and methane lol that helped gradually to warm the planet back past the tipping point. Humans place in the biosphere might be the species that releases CO2 that would otherwise be sequestered into the crust back into the atmosphere. Because the true basis for all food chains on Earth is CO2, not oxygen, we breath plant poop and eat plants. What we call herbivores are simply predators of plants. Which we eat also. But it is both rare and prohibitively expensive to eat animals that eat other animals that are too similar to us or so far near the end of the food chain. This also has an inherent danger of being the animals that have the highest parasitic load because they accumulate all those parasites in everything that made their way up the chain. Look at bears, so disgusting what's in a bear. You want to die a horrible death, eat raw bear meat. Of course we only hunt bears and raising them in captivity for meat could control this but it doesn't make sense to feed an animal meat for meat. Anyways, exit to your left and watch your step.

In politics a little research goes a long way and you'll find out who's who within 20 minutes if you are an average person who went to school. I agree with Tom on a lot of things but his take here seems to be pessimistic. He seems to agree that most voters are "dumb" and all people are "selfish" which shows his frame of reference. I think humans will thrive. I think we are strong and intelligent. I think we are, as individuals, extremely powerful. I think we are more informed and capable than ever. We don't lose unless we give up. it feels like he's encouraging people to give up or at least think twice before getting involved in forming an informed opinion on our governance. in america it is our belief in our country and our dream that has led to our success. we cannot forget that or give up on it. 🇺🇸

So right about self driven cars; I'm always grateful to the Tesla drivers I see sleeping peacefully on a highway. They are bringing us the future. Do the math. How many deaths will be prevented on CROSSING RED LIGHTS alone? Have you seen a car cross 3 LANES to exit last minute? You look at your speed. 70 miles per hour. You look behind you. No way to break. You are at the mercy of that psychopath. NO MORE . I'm 58 years old so I won't see it. Unfortunately. Chances are, I will die in a car accident. 50 years from now navigating around will be the safest thing humans do.

Tom I love your Econ Journey , but as an economist I have to correct you a bit. Inflation isn't instant. There is a Lag. Trump spending created inflation under Biden. Also, Biden also spent. So both. But First to spend doesn't feel the hangover effects. Additionally, Monetary policy isn't controlled by the President, so can't blame it all on one them. Fed thought inflation was transitory due to supply chains, so rates were too low too long, added to inflation.

Harris didn’t get food at it, the debate was incredibly one sided. Trump was the only one “fact checked”, at one point he was debating the moderator, and it’s known that one of the moderators was in Harris’s sorority. Idk if it was confirmed or not, but she also got the questions ahead of time. Now while I don’t think Harris did well and I think she had a lot of unfair advantages, Trump didn’t do a good job pointing out her shortcomings.

Tom’s view on self driving cars is very much an LA bubble. At least that’s how it feels to me. Robotaxies are great for very populated areas. Custom designed robotaxies for will be cost prohibitive for people with special needs, wheelchair access and may other custom features for each individual. They are not ideal for people that enjoy public lands that do not have paved roads. It would be a bad idea to force regulations that would exclude 20 or so percent of the population.
@RuneValken
@RuneValken Ай бұрын
I'm not in LA or a big city, but I'd love to not have to be the driver. If it's pretty outside I can't enjoy it because I have to keep my eyes on the road. If it's too dark to see much or just stuck in traffic I'd rather read or play videogames on my phone. But it's not safe to do that while driving.
