In our continuing attempt to visit 50 countries, we decided to look a little closer to home to see where we were missing. Low and behold, Isle of Man sat waiting for us! We used the Steampacket Ferry from Liverpool to cross over to this quiet and peaceful island. We really had no idea what to expect and to be honest, I don't think either of our expectations was incredibly high. HOWEVER, we were beyond pleasantly surprised to find that we loved this little country!
We kicked things off by taking the Electric Tram up to Laxey. There we attempted to visit the Laxey Wheel but found it to be under restoration... oh well! We found dinner in Douglas, enjoyed the beach, and turned in so we could catch our early bus the next morning. When we woke we took the bus to Peel! There we climbed a nearby hill, explored Peel Castle, learned about the marine life, and got some famous Davisons ice cream. During our time we also got to explore the town centers, break out our drone and eat some great food. So... 24 Hours in Isle of Man... is it worth going to? 100%, we hope to be going back one day! Maybe next time we will catch the Tourist Trophy/TT?
Tell us, where, in the UK, we should try and go to next! What would you like us to share? What did you think of the video? Leave a comment, like, and subscribe for more!!

When I was a kid in the 1960s the beach in Douglas was krpt beautifully clean. Every day in the summer it would be full of holidaymakers on deck chairs. Theres were kiosks that sold tea and coffee. You paud a deposit on a tray and took away a large pot of tea, hot water, milk, sugar and cups and saucers etc. You got your deposit back when you returned everything. Every morning the Salvation Army held Joyful Juniors activity sessions for kids to attend!

I would quite like to visit the Isle of Man. As I think you hinted, the Isle of Man is a semi-independent country. The only formal connection with the UK is that Elizabeth II is Lord of Mann; the UK Government looks after its defence and foreign affairs. It has a very ancient Parliamen, Tynwald. But most remarkably it has its own language, Manx, from the Celtic family of languages! Officially, this became extinct in 1974, when the last mother-tongue speaker died; but he and at least one other speaker were recorded on tape, and the language is being vigorously revived. There are schools only teaching in Manx. Acts of Tynwald are proclaimed in both English and Manx. The Manx name for the island is Ellan Vannin.

👍Great video, you crammed a lot into 24 hours ! You've made the most of you stay in the UK by visiting an impressive number of places and other countries. Shame that the Laxey wheel was closed, you can normally climb the stairs to a viewing area at the top which gives you a strange feeling as the giant wheel is rotating. You did right not to go while the TT races are on, the Island gets really busy and most of the hotels are booked up by bikers from all over the world......keep up the good work as tour guides, 😉you're doing an amazing job ! 👍

The Isle of Man also has a local Celtic language that some folks speak! It's named Manx! It's spoken by around 3% of the population which doesn't seem like a lot but it is growing slowly every single year! It's an interesting little language;

One thing that's not widely known to visitors is that the hotels along the promenade at Douglas during World War 2 were used as one vast guarded internment camp for civilians living in the UK who were German, Austrian, Italian and several other nationalities. There was a high fence along the edge of the beach and at the back of the hotels, the steep cliff had lots of barbed wire to prevent it being climbed. At first avid Nazis were locked up with Jewish refugees but eventually those not thought a threat to national security were released. To prevent surprises, the doors to all the hotel rooms were removed and taken to a store. At the end of the war the doors were supposed to be refixed in the correct place in the correct hotel. This was impossible because no one had thought to put a label on each door with the door's location. This is typical of Manx inefficiency.

@@Bh70399 that’s a good salary, we live off substantially less and we are a family of 3. Rent is quite expensive, so depends on area of the island you want to live and size of accommodation you want etc. But I would say that’s achievable with the salary you’ve been offered

Dont do it. Its so boring. The NHS here is a joke. We have some E Game boys that worked here but went back. There nothing to do for young people. Everything is more expensive. Bad attitude of people. If you dont like it there a boat in the morning. If you like bordom yes, if you want to enjoy life. Then its bad. Dont expect cheap services find a decent anything is hard here. The talented have moved away.

@@trueseeker262 oh really .. I am currently working in Qatar but I don’t like much over here except yes savings are a lot cus of low cost of living. I am from Pakistan and if you watch the world news you might know how the economic is back there currently so I need to send a good amount to my retired parents back home. Is it easy to move to London from Isle of Man ? Do you know anything about that? Or is it better. Actually I have quite a few friends in London so would have actually preferred that but will have to wait for a job opportunity. I love Italy but there I think there won’t be any jobs for me ( I am a chartered accountant) 😅

Isle of Man is not another country. It doesn't form part the UK. However, it is a territory and as such is under UK rule. Has British Citizenship, uses Sterling but cannot issue it's own bank notes and is under rule of the Sovereign. So, takes orders, rules and laws uncontested from the Westminster Palace. UK 🇬🇧 refers to the four nations of devolved governments. GB includes the British Isles in addition to all 4 nations. So GB is bigger than just the UK 🇬🇧
@gharris4581

It’s not under UK rule as it’s not part of the UK. We do have our own bank notes, we have our own government and our own laws.
@Person01234
@Person01234 Жыл бұрын
Wrong. Separate laws, "orders" are super rare though can technically be done but certainly are contested on the rare occasion that they happen. So we're not "under uk rule". We are under the British Crown. We have our own currency called the manx pound, which is pegged in value to the pound sterling. This means we don't have control over monetary policy and can't just print money willy nilly to give it to billionaires, but we do issue separate notes and coins (we still use round pounds) which are not legal tender in the UK. Great Britain technically refers to only the main, largest Island in the archipelago, although it has taken on a political meaning that is really just synonymous with the UK. The one thing you got right is that the Isle of Man is probably not classified as a country due to it's limited international identity and strange overall status. Personally I think it's ok to say that manx people don't live in a country. We live in the Isle of Man.
