I've had S40 2.4i And I have an S40 T5 now. Both are absolute weapons in their own categories 💯

Same here my S40's engine seized and I came up on a higher mileage but clean T5. Both are 2007. I super dig the car, its pretty old now but looks very modern. The sound system is great. The T5 has a bit of pep. I also dig the 4 dials for Audio and AC, super simple and nonintrusive. I added a bluetooth to aux adapter and its perfect for what I care about in a car. Plus they were both super cheap.

The 5 cylinder 2.4i mated to a 5-speed manual is fun AF to drive and reliable as they get. Fun and sporty, certainly not luxury, great little ride.

how is gas mileage? how does it manage gas in the city? Im looking at a 2009 2.4 s40 for about $USD 7000 and it looks VERY well taken care of, im just worried about gas expenditure

@@octaviorzavala845 I live and work in NYC and the majority of my commutes are bumper to bumper, and most short trips around town are less than 10 miles round trip. So I would say 90% of my driving is city miles. Given that, I get 21-23 mpg on most tanks. A little bit better with premium gas. A LOT better if I really baby it, and do my up-shifting around 2000-2500 rpm. On the highway, I've gotten 27-29 mpg no problem. The biggest factor is driving style for that last 15% of economy. This car is great at just chilling in the 2-3 thousand rpm range and then zooming away when things open up. Manual trans, not so fun all the time in traffic. Disclaimer, diesel engines, AWD, and automatic trans, I can't speak to. My fiance has the C30 T5 fwd auto, and she gets much worse mileage given the turbo and where we live, but DAYUM that hot hatch is a great city car.

@@octaviorzavala845 Also it occurs to me, if you haven't really considered it yet: the TIMING BELT MUST BE REPLACED. Service intervals are 10 years/100k miles, meaning basically every single S40 on the road is due if it it hasn't been done yet. Unless you have ROCK SOLID evidence that its been done more recently than than, it needs to be done as these are interference engines and a broken belt will nuke the engine. If it hasn't been done, you're looking at $1000-$1500 cost. Don't just do the belt, do the whole kit: water pump, pulley, etc. Now, this can be a bargaining point, because knowing this you can haggle down the price by a thousand or so. BUT it behooves me to tell you because now owning two P1 Volvos, I would NEVER consider ignoring the timing belt service intervals.

@@octaviorzavala845 City mileage is 20-22 mpg, and a little bit better if I use premium gas and baby the shifts, upshifting around 2000-2500 rpm. I imagine auto transmissions get a little worse. Turbo *def* gets a little worse (I also have a T5 C30 in the same age). Highway, I can get close to 30mpg. The manual can be tiresome in bumper-to-bumper traffic, but is hella fun to drive in all other situations. If you drive conservatively and use premium, you can expect 20 mpg or so, if everything else in the fuel, air, and spark delivery is functioning properly.
