These days in Australia we don't pay import tariffs on vehicles which is a great change from the previous years. So vehicles here are good value now. But the UK does have tariffs presently unfortunately so the price would be higher.

By allowing NEVs into the N/A market, it will force legacy manufacturers to switch up their business models and modernize, innovate and compete to offer better products for the consumers. Competition should not be feared or discouraged with rapid changes in technologies. 3. It would help meet our climate control goals as renewable electric energy is much cleaner than gas. The tariffs are meant to allow the legacy manufacturers to catch up but, of course, this is just a smoke screen as they have no intention to pivot to EVs. If they do, by the time they could catch up, car transportation will have evolved to another level. Best to survive by pairing up with a 🇨🇳 brand and working together.

I like the seats. The side support in the Tesla MY is too much for my a little bigger self (183cm, 120kg), the G6 is just right. My skinny (42kg) wife likes the seats too, and the back seat is comfortable as well. The center console is indeed a problem in many EVs, again in the G6 it didn't bother me, and retracted feet position when in self driving mode is great too. Seat ventilation works well, powerful AC (33C here in China when tested), the glass roof didn't cook my head unlike the MY. Rear passenger space is a lot bigger than MY. And yes the sound system is quite impressive. Amazing auto parking, good self driving on fast roads, quiet, a well tuned chassis. And the long range has plenty of power for fun driving, the Performance Max is probably totally unnecessary unless you need 4WD. No glove compartment, no frunk, but for me not a show stopper.

An interesting thing about charging the Xpeng G6 on Teslas supercharger network, is that the speed won´t really get above approx. 90-100 kW. Presumably because the G6 uses 800 v technology, which a few other brands also uses. At least this is the case in Denmark, where I live. Just something to be aware of.

Great review Sam! I'm now seriously thinking of getting one here in Canberra. What good value. Seven year warranty compared to Tesla's three. Auto parking. Fast charging. Can tow 1500 kg the same as Tesla Model Y. Power outlets for running equipment which Tesla does not have. Greater range than Tesla Y. And we can get a free charger through Sam the Electric Viking!

Sam, just a tip from a bloke who did a lot of rallying and some circuit racing a long time ago. You need to change your grip style on the steering wheel, you won’t be able to react quick enough with your right hand on the top of the wheel and the left doing nothing if something happens. Try the old tried and trusted ten to two position.

It's not OK to speed - this is the largest single factor in causing collisions and the energy of them is dependent on the square of the velocity. We need vehicles that actually prevent speeding to be mandated. In fact we will all be safer when most driving is autonomous.

Mate. I love your work. We met once at an EV car show but mate, I have a model 3 I bought second hand. AWD. Charges at 250kw. Now you keep talking about these fast charging cars. Great if you are NOT in Oz. Most charges around are the 130 for fast charging. Yes there are fast chargers around Sydney but not many so I just dont see any value currently in our country. Not to mention, its more expensive the fast chargers. Use Jolt and others that give away free power. Slower but much cheaper! But Im with you. If I wanted an SUV, the G6 is the better buy.

Tesla's one peddle driving is perfected and an amazing experience. It took me a week to become really good at one peddle driving, and I hate going back to driving the auto RAV4. It would be very annoying for the car to continue creeping at 1kph as this car does.

Informative video Sam - looks like the G6 is an interesting EV - will wait for the Model Y refresh to compare since the current Model Y is an older design compared to the G6 which isn't a like for like comparison. Out of curiosity, does the navigation system in the G6 plot charging stops and how long to charge for on long trips? This is a feature, I use regularly in my Model 3

Took one for a test drive in Melbourne on Saturday 14th September, Really nice car, still have a few small issues to sort out. Like the car rolling when it should be stopped. some of the digital assist was a tad jumpy. and at a tiny bit under $60k starting price, they are not massively cheaper than a Tesla Model Y. Once the Model Y is fully optioned up, there will be about a $10k difference.

If Tesla are smart they will use the model Y Juniper launch to make range anxiety a thing of the past. It's probably the biggest barrier to mass adoption IMO. The G6 long range is 570km from a 87.5kWh battery. Rumours coming from Tesla Berlin suggest Juniper long range could have a denser 95kWh battery capable of 700km range. That would do it. I'm waiting to see.

This is off topic but I have a question. When comparing maintenance cost of ice cars and electrics, is the repair cost included in the maintenance costs. Every ice car I have owned has had major repairs just after the warranty expires.

Test drove the Highland and sure it seemed better than the M3 which I have also driven. But nothing substantially groundbreaking. Most noticeable - ambient lighting, rear seat display panel, seating, no stalks, better suspension, better soundproofing. I'm guessing the Juniper refresh will be along the same lines. Having tested the G6, i find it to be more comfortable to ride in. Not being bothered about acceleration so much, I'm quite impressed with the tech and UI which is better than say BYD and on par with Tesla. I'm sure the Juniper will look great and I think the G6's looks will grow on me juat like the BYD Seal did. Overall I'm happy to see strong healthy competition between the manufacturers.

I am both nervous and excited by the ferocity of chinese comeptition. Nervous as a Tesla investor but excited as a potential EV upgrader. Part of the excitement is also that the model Y juniper is coming out next year and hopefully really steps up the offering. Price is going to be tough too.

I'm curious about some of the small details when comparing other EV makers. My Model S is using google maps for routing with realtime traffic and is permanently connected to Telsa 4G with its own Spotify account. Do the other manufacturers include these "extras"? And when I use the supercharger network, battery pre-conditioning occurs enroute and the route planning captures my battery level and station usage and even re-routes me. I don't believe other EVs have this level of integration even using the Tesla network. It seems BYD and others offer an extra driver's screen, apple carplay and leather options which are attractive but won't be as valuable to the ownership experience as the Tesla integrations. Not being defensive, but we have seen many manufacturers bring out seemingly better cars than Tesla, only to find they don't score as well when professionally reviewed (no offence Sam the Viking), or stack up when it comes to the ownership experience. I only need to see the new Juniper bring one thing: more range. SR needs to be 550-600kms and LR I want to see pushing 700-800kms. And this is less about actual travel distance and more that no Tesla gets their rated range and Australian hot summers need lots of AC.

While you see the Xpeng G6 as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, I think it unreasonable to make a comparison between it and the current Model Y, as it will soon be superseded. A more valid comparison of features would be with the Model 3. 1. Tesla has no maintenance schedule, and maintenance costs are minimal. How does the Xpeng G6 compare? 2. From your video, it appears that regen does not cause the vehicle to stop, so the brake needs to be used. Unlike the Tesla which has full one-pedal driving. 3. How does trip planning compare with Tesla's? 4. Does the Xpeng have pixelated headlights and when on high beam does it have automatic blanking out of oncoming cars? 5. Does the Xpeng have over the air updates? And will they be regular over time? 6. Does the Xpeng have keyless entry? 7. Does it have easy entry, where it electrically adjusts the seat and steering wheel? 8. Does it have free subscriptions to Spotify etc? 9. How does Gpeng's autopilot compare with Tesla"s? 10. The Gpeng Australian web site does not give any pricing yet, as at 5.9.24. So it's impossible to make a financial comparison.

BYD software is nowhere near XPeng quality. BYD cars tend to lose a lot of WLTP range in real driving. XPeng always wins those tests in Europe. Closest to WLTP out of all models, 10% better than Tesla. BYD is usually close to the bottom.

From the video sections showing the Front seat belts and rear seat belts, the front belts are black but the rear belts are white. Not sure how white belts will hold up in time. May have been better to have all the seat belts Black.

For now I would only buy the Xpeng instead of Tesla bc of >30% cheaper in price. Eventually I think quality of XP software and hardware would be comparable to Tesla

Compare the thing to a Juniper and looks go to Juniper. It should be just as quiet if not more so than a G6 with double-glazing all around including roof and vastly improved suspension. Xpeng is basically a Chinese Tesla, with “borrowed” software. From Tesla.

I quickly got used to the steering wheel indicators. 5+ months later and it feels completely natural. Now the stalk indicators on the wife’s Atto 3 feel a bit wierd,

I see a lack of sports seats/aggressive side walls as a pro. I spent some time in a Telsa and is it less aggressive than model Y/3? I'm used flat seats and atto3 being a big guy, I couldn't actually fit, without it being very uncomfortable.

Question For Electric Viking Re Xpeng G6 Battery's In a lot of earlier video posts you have reflected LFP Battery is the way to go for safety. Now you are advising purchasing the Long Range G6 which has the NMC battery. Many have placed orders through your link for the std range rather than the long range due to safety concerns with the NMC battery that is in the long range. What is so special about the G6 NMC battery that has changed your mind. Has the G6 NMC battery been designed to be a lot safer reducing the risk of thermal runaway, fire and explosion? If so please explain! Andrew

Although the G6 has been given a 5 star safety rating the G6 has not been crash tested by Euro NCAP. You would think it would be in XPENGs best interest to have the G6 tested ASAP

How does the boot size and storage space compare to the model Y. I prefer to have more boot space and rather than a huge space in the back seat area….more practical for a family of four when traveling overnight with bags etc

At 4.753m long a few millimetres longer than the model Y and reclinable rear seats - I suspect space will not be an issue either trunk nor rear passenger space- it’s a big car. EV6 is 4.680m long.

The centre console is too wide and high. Too intrusive. The regen should actually stop the car not creep forward. This is annoying when stopping behind someone at the lights. I like the warning sounds my Tesla has. It helps me stay safe and avoid fines.
