The engine's redline is also, typically, the high end of its power band. Reving an engine past its power band can actually either result in no gain in acceleration or even reduced acceleration in addition possibly causing engine damage, unnessisary wear, ect. It's why racers will sometimes say an engine "lays over" or "stops pulling" at high rpm.
@sushmananda3931 Жыл бұрын
Yep. Even on dyno, the graph shows that power and torque decreases after certain rpm. Even when I use my bike or car. When I accelerate quickly. It reduces the acceleration the it's redline.
@sigmamale4147 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the engine
@yod2189 Жыл бұрын
It depends on alot of things for example and 8v engine would be better to shift earlier to gain power again but a 16v would be better to rev out for full power to shift to the next gear at the right rpm to pull forward hard

@kksome108 жыл бұрын
+ThatOneCarChannel the pentastar is one of the best designed v6's to have been mass produced ever. in all varients it has expetional power and beats its competitors other naturally aspirated v6 on all platforms. it also is a leader in fuel economy and long-term durability. these are very very good designed engines. for reliably its compared and called by meany the modern day equivalent of the GM 3800 series motors. and surpasses it in all other categories lol very far from a shit motor.

Similar thing happened to me once. This truck pulled next to me at a red light (this was when I had just started driving on my own, so I wasn't going to race or anything). The pickup revved his engine at me and the dude stared at me like he was ready to prove something. I didn't pay any attention to him, and he took off and started speeding like crazy. Next thing I know, this jet-black minivan with tinted windows speeds by me too, and all I could think was "lol why is this minivan trying to catch up to him, idt he can stand a chance tbh". All was good until the minivan's police lights turned on. Me being a new driver, I was worried that the cop might think I was racing too, even though I wasn't, so I panicked like hell. That was the first and last time I ever saw a minivan police car, interesting stuff.

I once made a right turn on red in my manual-transmission Mercury Tracer (I think it was a 1992 or thereabouts) just as a semi truck entered the same road behind me from an entrance ramp travelling at ~50mph. I floored the gas while watching the road in front and rearview mirror until I felt the rev limiter kick in. Glancing at the dash, I was going about 45mph and the tach was well into the red, but there wasn't a truck embedded in my bumper so I was happy. Shifting sooner might have been better, but with a semi approaching quickly it's hard to take one's foot off the gas. Still, I wouldn't have guessed the tracer could make it to 45mph in first gear.

If you ever buy a Porsche and some other German cars, there is a recommended DME check that shows the number "ignitions" near, at & above redline. There are several stages of the over-revs. Some of which can make your P-car much harder to sell. I would never buy a car that's hit the rev limiter more than a few times. Not just for the engine's sake, but it indicates how the car was treated overall.

@Alejandro Gil my Peugeot 206 HDi seemed to have a gradual fuel cut kick in from 4k and levelling off at 5200. The power band was like 2500 to 4000 though with torque dropping off above 3000. My mum's old focus was the opposite - didn't do that much below 2000 but the 3000-4500 was whoosh. The throttle response was really laggy though, not punchy at all compared to any petrol car I owned or the 206 HDi. Obviously electric will have the most immediate accelerator response, unless you artificially delay or introduce a ramp up time with a controller (on my electric bike about a quarter second is added and it feels similar to my petrol car).

Rev limiters are usually set just a few hundred rpm past redline. And theyre simply a safety feature to save your engine if you mess up. However, you bounce the needle off the limiter very often and you will end up with valve train damage. More than likely a bent push rod.

Should you redline your engine- Occasionally. Just to be safe try not to reach the redline and certainly try not to go beyond it, but getting close to it shouldn't hurt anything. In fact sometimes driving your car hard for a brief amount of time is good for it and can help get rid of some carbon that may have built up overtime by super hot exhaust gasses forcing it out. Occasionally running a bottle of seafoam cleaner through the engine on top of this is beneficial. Be sure to only do stuff like this when your engine is at operating temperature, though, when the oil is nice and warm and is able to lubricate everything....... Also if you have a bad timing chain don't be STUPID and DO NOT REDLINE. You're asking for your engine to blow up.....

It's actually worse for an engine to never go into the high rev range, especially with turbos as as mentioned briefly at the end you get carbon buildup that the exhaust gas flow doesn't catch unless it's at a higher pressure. Like gravity
@theq46028 жыл бұрын
Back in the day ( pre-1984) there were specific tractor truck diesel engines made by Detroit that were always run at redline. That's where they made power because they used unit injectors. Typically this was 1800rpm for the largest to 2800rpm for their smallest. Most were run at 2100-2300. They sounded wicked loud as that they were 2 stroke diesels. No intake or exhaust stroke. That was handled by a supercharger.

I once changed from redline in second gear to first instead of third on accident. It felt like I ran into a brick wall, but somehow my car was fine. Fastest deceleration I've ever experienced though...

I used to keep at 3000 to 3200. But since moving into a much more compact city I am finding myself shifting at like 4k now. My car doesnt have much power so I need the rpms to speed up faster.

I think it also depends on the age/mileage of the car. A brand new car can handle bouncing off the limit, like all hire cars do. A 15 yr old car with 200,000 miles on it will probably accumulate some damage by hitting the limiter.

Yep, one of our 12 year old car has a lot of problems and usually gets overheated very quickly.

My previous car was an FRS. My dad told me I was an idiot for driving it between 5-7k rpms when I was cruising for fun not daily driving. 5-7 is the power band, the only time the car actually feels like it has some power. Red line starts at 7.5. I appreciate hearing that my dad was wrong.

I ALWAYS wondered what that red line meant. I had no idea it was a graphical representation of the speed at which your engine could incur damage. I had no idea all the other questions I never asked had such self explanatory answers. Thanks. Sincerely, A. Notheridiot Moran.

RPM not RPMs, you don't do revolutions per minuetS. It was really really bugging me.

@mulymule128 жыл бұрын
+luke gainey dude. You never get rpm with a s on the end. 1000rpm 9000rpm same of Torque. You don't get 500 foot pounds of torques. Just Torque. Because is a unit of measurement

@kylegibson29358 жыл бұрын
Redline is realistically typically around peak power. In which the manufacture or engine builder will build components to stay together at those rpms. Keep in mind Parker, Hp = torque x rpm / 5252

It's good when it gets you where you want to go faster. It's bad when it gets you a ticket or worse, into an accident. So assuming you avoid the last two incidents I say it's a good thing :)
