As an Canadian expat living in Croatia, a question I get frequently is, "What country is better to live in?" I never really know how to respond because there are positives to living in both places, and there's no short, straight-forward answer.
Here I'll go through a few things I've picked up on over the past 9 years of living in Croatia. All in all, I really do love both countries, and each country has a lot to offer its residents.

As a Croat, I would hate if the server comes to my table every few minutes to make sure I have everything I need. If I need anything I wave to the server and he will be there right away.

Then you also wouldn’t like Latin America. I think we adapt to differences. I got used to being ignored when I lived in France. Sometimes when your lunch hour is all you have as in the States or UK waiting for a waiter is not doable.

It's really annoying in the states when the waiter/waitress comes up to your table every 5 minutes asking you if "everything is OK?"

Instead of seeing the negative just see it as cultural difference. In Latin America the waiters are also very “kind” or call it what you prefer. I think there’s a middle road - too much service or none is not very pleasant

Konobara želim vidjeti 3 puta: kad mi donese jelovnik, kad donese naručeno i kad zatražim račun. Ako nešto nije u redu il dodatno trebam sam ga zovnem. Ako to ispoštuje dobije napojnicu 😂😂😂😂

Ja se nikad nisam privikao na to. Jer sam relativno star stigao u US. To me je nerviralo premda su mi prijatelji objasnili da osoblje u restoranima radi više ma ke za napojnicu i naučio sam se ostavljati napojnicu. Još jedna stvar mi je bila čudna ali sam se navikao. Gdje god dođeš ljudi su nasmješeni. E brate to kod nas jednostavno nema. Ja sam uspio da navučem taj fake osmjeh jer su me prijatelji previše često pitali da li je sve OK. U prvo vrijeme sam objašnjavao da je osmjeh sastavni dio emocije i da ja to ne trošim bez razloga ali sam poklekao i da bih izbjegao pitanja sad sam i ja always smile 😊😊😊. Iskreno to mi nedostaje kad sam doma.

Eto ja Sam u Australiji ,malo se bolje odnose Prema gostu negu u Hrvatskoj ,nekako u nas su namrgodjeni Koda ga je netko mokrom krpom opalio , netreba se smijat Ali ni Ono nije Dobro ,U Australiji nema napojnica za razliku od Amerike I Kanade vrati ti se svaki cent .Sto ja osobno vise volim ,kupio ,platio ,dovidjena .,Te napojnice za sto ,za njegova gazdu ,sta da ga manje plati Ili.

I honestly hate it when waiters interupt me during my meal non stop. Also you will have no problem with kids during highschool, take the croatian aproach and just treat them like adults. They can organize their activities themselves. Great video btw:)

Kanadski youtuber hrvatskih korijena koji živi u Hrvatskoj 10g je rekao metaforički da je Kanada kao torta koju kupiš u dućanu, izvana je predivna, ali iznutra je prazna i neukusna, a za Hrvatsku je rekao da je Hrvatska torta ona koju frend napravi kod kuće i ružno izgleda, ali da je iznutra fina i ima svoju dušu. Vrlo dobro receno ! naravno da ne treba vrijedati druge zemlje. Ja zivim vec toliko dugo u Njemackoj, duze nego sam zivjela u Hrvatskoj, i nije mi mrska. Ipak, kad god me netko pita kuda cu za odmor, uvijek nesvjesno kazem "kuci"...

Teenagers in Croatia are only able to work during the summer and only if they are 15 years old or older, as for the customer service it's like that in Croatia because Croats don't like people interrupting them while eating ( we love our food hehe)

Very interesting observations. I agree on majority of your remarks with only one small uncertainty when it comes to quality of service. Although I do believe that many services are surely better in Canada, when it comes to restaurants, cafes of these kind of places this is a bit more complex and culturally dependent. Many people in Croatia, but also in much of the Europe prefer somewhat higher level of privacy and calmness when they're at their table in restaurant and less interaction with the restaurant's staff unless they're ready to order, pay the bill or simply need something. To many of us that kind of treatment would be somewhat intrusive or over enthusiastic to experience waiters coming for several times during our stay to check if everything is OK or something else if they're not specifically given sign to approach. Even more, it would be giving impression of prompting customers to finish their meal asap and would be leaving somewhat ugly impression that everything is nothing but huge revolving industry that has to be kept going very much like the factory assembly line! Personally I don't like that and that can really affect my positive experience. People in Croatia are much more relaxed than those in the western world so we do expect professional but more relaxed approach! It's perfectly alright if waiter is relatively attentive at ordering but in a subtle way by noticing body language or known gestures of visitors. It's also normal that waiters come to help only if they're specifically given sign from the guest to come. Also it's OK when they ask us if we liked our meal at the very end but only once. Anything more than this is considered as nuisance for many visitors.

So true, I could not get used to the quick meal at a restaurant, in Europe people spend easily an hour or more at the table, in North America you have to leave fast so the waiter can get more tips from more customers

I think the service is a cultural difference, I hate when in the states servers keep coming and interrupting, I'll call you if I need you kind of thing, then handing you the bill what to a Balkan person sort of seems like them asking you to leave, I'll call the waiter when I am ready. It is what you are used to, they are not better or worse, they are just different

Or saying - we will let you know if we need anything - the waiter won’t get offended. Basically in the USA during the week lunch time is one hour - so the waiter is available. We can’t lounge. Dinner time can be slower and the waiter will ask you what you need since they are making their money from tips. I have never felt that a waiter was harassing us but i don’t get offended easily. In Croatia my sister was offended when sales people would follow her but I explained to her they were trying to be polite. Once she got that and let them invade her space - it’s was fine. It’s not like the sales people or waiters dont get it when you say - just looking. They are human beings who are just doing their job🙄

I have to add one thing about the customer service. I am Croatian, I live and work in Germany as a waiter, I also lived in Ontario, Canada for 4 years. The waiters in Canada might be attentive and one step ahead of the customer, but one thing always bothered me in Canada. The stuff is always nice to you until you pay and they get their tips, after that point in most cases nobody gives a s**t about you. Many times I was leaving and trying to say Thank you and goodbye, but nobody was interested that you are leaving. Can't happen when I am working here in Germany, every customer gets eye contact from me, a Thank you and goodbye. I found Canadians are very friendly, but in this case kind of rude.

That's exact thing I wanted to say; I agree with her on every point except for customer service! I've only been in USA for two weeks, and I absolutely LOVED customer service the first week. Then I started noticing how they're all smiles when they are turned towards me, and they were all frown as soon as they turned away from me... that's no way to live a life, and 80% of them were like that. Once I noticed that, I wished they would tell me to F off just to feel a tiny drop of genuine feelings from them.

I, as a kid, always liked the afternoon shift more than a morning shift. I could sleep a couple hours longer. I had my sport practices in the morning before school. And when I had an exam, reviewing the material before school would help a lot. So it really depends person to person which shift do you like more. Also, there are schools that have exclusively morning shift, so if your kid has a lot of afternoon activities, it would be better for them to attend those kind of schools. Love your videos btw 😊

(I was doing backflips for this one) Day Care - Croatia Standard of Living - Canada (strictly monetarily speaking; but lifestyle no way!) Youth Employment - Canada Coffee - CROATIA!!! (Death to Tim Hortons!) Drive-Thru - Canada Bakeries - CROATIA!!! Food - Croatia Customer Service - Canada (but it's really fake & insincere, especially in restaurants) Vacation Time - Croatia Education - Croatia (average Croat is smarter than the average Canadian) Healthcare - Canada Safety & Crime - Croatia (hands down, you can't even compare this one, and its not because of size of the city) If you value material goods above all else you live in Canada. An elementary school I went to was being reconstructed/expanded while I was attending so, for a while, we actually had three shifts. After the expansion was over we went to just one shift.

here in Croatia teenagers work during summer breaks when we have time of of school because its more important to focus on your studies than work at that age.. i work every summer since i was 15 or 16, and it helped me a lot to learn how to save and manage money. First day of summer holidays is my first day of work and i always save up money for myself so when school starts i can buy myself new books, clothes and give myself my own lunch money. It's neither better nor worse than it is for teenagers in Canada but it's a different, also efficient way :)

Afternoon school shift sucks, I can tell you that. I always hated it when I was in school and still hate it now as a parent. It is not practical, kids won't do their homework in the evening, they will sleep longer in the morning, everything will get hectic...it's just a mess...also, you miss out on daylight to spend time outiside .

People can adopt a new home, and still keep old home in their heart. I am from Banja Luka, it was before such a nice place for life, but I changed and went out for a search for a new home and I found it in Bali💙❤

i can confirm that two school shifts are not in all of croatia. Some cities have just a morning shift across all the schools primary and High school. Also, i get that you like the thing that waiter comes to you to check on you, but in my opinion its really annonying for him to ask me all the time if im good. I will tell him if something is wrong or i need something. Also for the bill, they give you the bill early because technically if you leave the restaurant or a bar without paying, you are not doing a crime if they never gave you the bill and if they did then you are doing the crime. Not all bar or restaurants pay attention to this as you will almost never see someone get up without paying, but some do.

I think it is good to work as a teenager. I did practice at the sea in the hotel when I 15 years old. One of the best experiences in my life, she is taking about her experiences as well. It is not a bad idea.

As a fellow Canadian in Croatian - I agree with you on absolutely everything here! I would just add that in terms of education Croatia tends to take a really traditional approach whereas the majority of Canada is on the cutting edge of best educational practice (in light of modern research, at least). And for safety I would take into account the earthquakes (even though they didn't happen for years, until I moved here haha). But this was a great breakdown of the differences between the two countries! Glad I found your channel :)

Sometimes it is better to be a bit on the conservative side than on the bleeding edge. This was especially true during the communist regime. I'm so thankful to our teachers (Zagreb) who were able to take everything wit a pinch of salt and communicate what and when it was necessary in nonverbal ways.

I hate when waiters in Australia (very similar to Canada in many aspects, Anglo-Saxon cultural framework) come 5-6 times to our table and ask me how everything is ... especially when the meal is crap, and if you tell them the truth, they make a face and don't do anything about it, but never come back and leave you alone ... Teenagers here do work, but only during summer. It's sort of like going on vacation/working. Jobs they typically do are either at gas stations cleaning car windows, McDonalds, summer camps as entertainers, hotels, hostel management, day care at camps, etc. It's a typicall teen/college type of job. It starts in June and ends mid September. They are usually 12h shifts, and they are paid around 5000-8000kn per month depending on the job.

In Australia we have 4 weeks annual leave every year. Also after working in one place for 10 years we are entitled to “long service leave”, which is 13 weeks leave. You don’t have to take this 13 weeks off all at once and you can add like extra 2 weeks leave every year and have 6 weeks until you use it up. You negotiate with your work place. If you leave your work place you don’t loose your leave entitlement. The employer has to pay you the money they owe you for the leave you are entitled to. also. Your leave accumulates monthly. For example if you have only worked in one place as a permanent worker for 6 months, the employer owes you 2 weeks annual leave and if you switch jobs they have to pay you for leave if you havnt taken it. So it’s like a banking system. This only applies to permanent workers not casual though

Love your videos! I lived in Vancouver 90% of my life and am now living in Zadar so for me the weather is very similar (Vancouver does not have “Canadian” winters) except here there is the Bura and Jugo 💨 I wish Vancouver had the gas prices Toronto has☹️ here in Croatia it is more expensive but not by much compared to Vancouver prices but it is better quality of gas (95-100 octane compared to 87-91 in Vancouver) I love that fact that travel in Croatia is so much more accessible with a car be it within Croatia as well as rest of Europe! It’s awesome hearing your experiences.

Croatians also hate the bureaucracy in Croatia. It's so common to be missing one document that we even have an acronym to describe it: FT1P - Fali Ti 1 Papir. Terrible! P.S. When I lived in the US, I was getting quite annoyed by the waiters not letting me eat my meal / drink my coffee in peace. For example, I would be talking with a friend about something private and/or important and we'd get interrupted all the time. Plus the fake cheer made me uncomfortable. Had I stayed living in the States longer, I would probably have given up on eating out. So, we can't really say that waiters are bad in Croatia, they're just the way Croatians want them to be -- quiet, far, but in visible distance to be waved over in case we need something.

Well about working as a teenager in Croatia it really depends where you live..I live in Pula and I have started with work when I was 16 at summer breaks. We usually went to work in any tourist oriented job like souvenir shop, selling tickets for national parks, caffe shops, Mc Donalds, different clothing shops etc. And we did it legaly trough school service and later as students trough student service.

Going to school in afternoon is better, cuz if you study in the morning for the multiple exam, the knowledge will not evaporate thru the night. I used to skip all the exams whenever i was in the morning shift. If you have only one exam while in morning shift, its ok, but multiple exams are deadly ones. So, afternoon shift is actually god given

Hi my dear Canadian friend. I went opposite way. Lived in Canada for 15 years and then came back home to Rijeka. I totally agree with most things you talked about in this video and I understand your feelings. I miss so many things from Canada, often Tim Hortons coffee, sometimes donuts and BLT sandwich at every corner, Sub sandwiches, Mandarin "All you can eat" restaurants, Red Lobster, Montana beef ribs... not to mention beef stakes... and, my house for sure. I worked at head office as financial analyst for 10 years, never felt as a stranger and still have Canadian friends. I guess long Canadian winters lost versus Croatian coast and my home town. I am going for coffee whenever i can to Millennium in Opatija, my favorite beach is Moscenicka Draga, mountains are just few kilometers up north, islands are also very close. Rijeka is mostly shopping area, but I also enjoy Korzo and city center once in a while. Market is really good! Used to be even better, a have to notice. I would say that Rijeka is good place to live!! However, I might not be very objective since, it is my home town after all.

Going to school in the afternoon is GREAT!!! You go to pools and swimm in the morning, get back, eat, drink, do your homework, pray you get all A's, your friend comes by, you rehearse for the exam and you catch a tram together on your way to school! WHAT is not to like??? Also, classes that already had the exam in the morning shift already sent you the questions they had been asked, so it is so much more convenient to prepare and excell. Also, you make many good friends that way, as you tend to do the same for them, and some people even help each others study things which some find difficult to comprehand during the classes and that builds up great understanding, empathy and simpathy between children at school, rather than bulling you have in USA and Canada! Actually, I think you imported that when you foreigners arrived ha ha ha - crazy!!! We have never had anything like that before, but were always taught to help the weaker, young and old, black or white, small or big, fat or skinny, foreign or domestic - regardless... Ever since anglosaxon crime and teenage high school bulling/ malestation films arrived, like a bad seed, we have had a few, outbursts, but dealt with that pretty quickly! Nobody likes bullies here. We have another kind - "rich dady hercegovac' son", ha ha ha! But he only runs people down on the streets with his brand new fast car, because his father did not buy him a tram. Altgough, he will buy him the tram company, when son gets of age! Or, at least, he will employ him there as a CEO. And, then, WE have mister Horvatinčić, Čačić, Milanović (but he only drives Ray Ban in a boat at Gunja, really...burst pipes!), Anemic Andrej, and a ghost of our late city mayer, and you in Canada DON'T! Canada is a really popper's country, I reckon... Nothing to cut boats with, no boost for funeral businesses... I just need to give a 1000 more points to Croatia, not just because your country is so hectic, while Croatians are so relaxed, but also because we are SO rich, that we throw it all over the hills and mountains and woods: just our Mt.Medvednica cable costs more than Saudi gold!!! I guess you need 20 more years here to figure that out. You already nailed birocracy, bread and Dolac! And, be so kind, when already local, just send me a recipe for the blueberry baggles! Hello! I would just like to comment the teenage employment. Everyone can work here when they finish elementary school. We have different contracts - school contract and college contract. They are usually way better (legal minimun wage is MUCH higher for students) so we usually do work but mostly in summer. I believe this is more common on the shore though :D

Canada is huge country. So huge driving from one point of interest to another it is not easy. Crosses for close family or friend in ditches on side of the road keep others on alert and hopefully awake. Or they get turned into Oil if not so. if you drive Croatia with your car on Croatian highway from east ( Slavonia ) to the south ( Dalmatia ),you will realize that you drive thru 5 different zones :) ,Slavonia is dry zone,region of Zagreb to the tunnel " Mala Kapela " is continental zone,seam you drive out from that tunnel,you are in Lika and that is forest upland zone and it's ever colder than all other zones in Croatia and that zone is to the tunnel " Sveti Rok " ,that tunnel drive thru the mountain of Velebit and you enter in my favorite zone - DALMATIA almost ever sunny coastline land with very nice weather and soft Winter ( only when is blowing our gloriously BURA :) ,very heavy and cold wind ) and at the end you are in 5th zone,that is from Metković to Dubrovnik and that zone is how I use to call it " wild west zone ".

I'm Croatian but I live in Western Europe and I like when the waiter comes and asks me once or more during the meal if I need something. It's actually very nice habit because I can say or order something else and don't need to interrupt my meal and look for waiter. But everybody is different.

If you're living in Zagreb, which I got from your videos, there are elementary schools which only have morning shifts.. A lot of them actually.. But usually yes, our schools are double shifted.. :)

Never been to Canada but just judging off of stereotypes I would agree about everything except the food. I have a really hard time seeing how America/Canada could have better and more authentic/fresh food than a country like Croatia. I get the whole variety argument, but I believe the quality of the food itself is better in Croatia (southern Europe in general). Oh and one last thing: the reason why Croatian cities are safer than Canadian cities is not the size, it is the lack of multiculturalism, but I guess that is not PC to say. Great video!

Canada is so multicultural that we can find pretty much any type of food made by authentic chefs from those countries. Here in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories I can at anytime find, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Ukrainian western etc. All owned and operated by Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Ukrainian, people, etc. However, I have yet to notice any Croatian restaurants in Yellowknife, but I do know we had some Croats living here. I know of two families though that have gone back to Croatia. Probably didn’t like the cold. We just ended a week straight of -40 to -45 c with windchills to near -60.

I have to correct you about work, yes teenagers can work and there is also "učenički servis" that takes care about your contract. My first job was at a small local store in Zagreb and I was 15 by then. For teenagers popular jobs are selling ice creams and other stuff on the seaside or washing the windshield on the cars at petrol stations. Some children tend to work in grocery stores.... BUT it teenage labor is definitely not common, in my experience I would say that when I was a teen maybe 10% of my friends were working and it was only during summer. :)

I agree on a lot of stuff, I live outside of Toronto and am planning to move to Croatia in the next few years, I was born there and need to get away from Canada's winter, getting older with more ailments doesn't help. Looking at Makarska to settle down. I must say my wife and I dont goto restaurants often (pre pandemic as well) because servers annoy me every 5 min, I dont like interruptions while I eat, if I need you, I'll call you One other thing, how do you feel about festivals, compared to Canada? It seems like there are a sick abundance of them in Croatia, Advent at Christmas? Easter, saint days, and nothing open on Sunday's Looks like easy way of life is very attractive to me. You could have opened an office in Croatia from your Canadian company. Easy to open and 100% legal. The only issue is that you might be able to pay taxes twice - Canada would reimburse it to you while filing annual tax. Also, While you were talking about services in restaurants :-), you did not encounter that in Canada and United States waiters are pushing you to eat as fast as possible so they can serve another table (bigger turnover). In Croatia you have all the time you need to digest your food. For that and only that reason I would give the point to Croatia

I didn’t realize that teenagers don’t have jobs in Croatia as they do in Canada. That’s really interesting. I agree with you that having a job as a teenager has so many benefits not only in making some money but learning teamwork and responsibility, and gaining skills and self-confidence. About teenagers jobs. They can work when in high school and university. The problem is that a lot of us go to school or university by bus or train so we don't have time to work. But others work mostly in a caffe or some stores. A lot of my high school friends did that. Now when I'm in university, a lot of my friends can work because they go to classes by car so they have time to go to work. About the paperwork, yes, we hate it as well haha

It's just a difference in mentality, rather than the quality of service I'd say. In Croatia, what we expect of a waiter and what we consider to be a great service is simply to be courteous, to bring us what we ordered... and to then leave us in peace until we're ready to either order extra or pay the bill. We like to take our time as you have probably already noticed, and during that time we don't like being disturbed. While I understand why they do it, I would be really uncomfortable in NA if I was with a friend enjoying a pint of beer, and a waiter was hoovering over us the entire time. Just wanted to pitch on on that part, everything else about the video is mostly spot on.
