Now I understand why I like Gabriela so much. Sure she's crazy talented and a very technical singer but... there's a lot of craft behind these performances in addition to conviction. It shows, and the energy she puts on developing these pieces is reflected on the end result.

Great stuff KT! These types of videos are very interesting. Gabbi is a fabulous singer and I can't imagine ANYONE worth their salt told her she can't sing! That person is a fool (and proved that every day now that Gabbi's career is soaring!) God bless and rock on 😎👍🎸

Such a great interview with spot on nuances. Embodying and embracing a song with your own take on an artist's story... that's what sets Gabriella apart and showcases her uniqueness... Major props to Ken for teaching Gabby the sky's the limit with proper techniques 😀😎❤

Such an important issue- to be good at a style, piece or interpretation you have to spend real time with it, possibly years. This is the reality of performing at a professional level.

Great video! I remember 8 years ago i was told by 2 opera singing teachers that I will never be able to sing. I was devastated but ended up proving everyone wrong. I would love for you to do a vocal analysis of Amy Lee from Evanescence singing "going under" acoustic. Ive been listening to that every day and am mesmerized by her unique technique and style.

The amount of singers I've met who've been told as some point that they can't sing. It's one of the things that I think makes learning to sing so hard, you play any other instrument poorly and people are encouraging and tell you to keep going. But people here you sing and sound bad, people just want to shut you down instantly and tell you to quit. Never forget that even the best singers sound bad at times. It is through our failures that we improve.

I'm pretty good with languages and in particular getting the accents right. For me, a language has the personality of the culture impregnated in it. That language doesn't just communicate ideas. It does so with a personality. That personality even differs between different cultures that speak the same language. Spanish has a distinctly different flavor when spoken by a Spaniard than it does when spoken by a Mexican. For that matter, the Spanish spoken in the state of Oaxaca sounds very different than the Spanish spoken in the state of Sonora. Accents come easily for me because I LIKE the flavor of that culture and imitating it is very much like savoring food. Not just tasting food, but savoring it. A well made taco is amazing. A well made chocolate cake is also amazing, but has a completely different flavor. It's easy to savor both of those foods, but you're appreciating different taste qualities in each case. I am very sure that for Gabriela, being able to sing in a certain style very much begins with appreciating or savoring the flavor and intelligence of what that particular style shares with us. Norm Macdonald, my favorite comedian of all time, used to say that he wasn't an impressionist and yet the flavor contained in his impressions were spot on. His impressions of Rodney Dangerfield, Super Dave Osborne, and Bob Uecker were stellar. Norm has more than once said that he can't do an impression of someone unless he likes them. His impressions would convey what was unique and funny about that person's style; but his impressions were more laughing WITH the person he was impersonating, rather than laughing at them. I have no doubt that for Gabriela, she's able to perform a particular singer's style for the same reason, that she enjoys and appreciates the unique qualities of that artist.

The reason why I follow Ken is not that he can do everything. I follow Ken because on the things he's doing he's a beast. To put it into a metapher. If you want to teach me to play guitar I don't care wether you use a banjo, a shamisen or a medieval lude because they are based on the same principle and if you're good and I spent alot of time with you I finaly can buy the instrument I first wanted to play and apply the principles. On that point I don't care what other instrumets you can play beside the guitar. You know I go with the proof is in the singing (according to some others the proof is in the amount of parlortricks you can vocalize.) How often did I fail as beatboxer because I wanted to impress? I think alot of time. I do not sound like a beginner but I learned one thing. The majority just want to groove. Therefor the "let's surprise them" aproach I had totally is a failure. I know that because I also helped my friend to write his songs and it was alot of deleting and swapping because not every Idea fits on every beat. (I know Ken uses his guitar as a guidance when it comes to songwritting. While I use different layers of beatboxing sounds. So even if we use different instruments the way we write songs is actually very similar.) So back to the video. I agree it takes alot of time. Therefore I do it like pavaroti and see myself as a very passionate student. I also like the dig deep into the genre aproach. I do not only know how the music is played I also know the history of the instruments, the culture it came from. That's important to me. And also that it takes time to adapt to a certain style. But hey, if you learned a bunch of styles learning a newone is gets much faster, because then you have a toolbox. So learning your first song is like if you want to draw that beautyfull masterpiece done by your neighbor, you go into the forest, you collect all the plants and snailes and stuff, you sunbathed it you smash you filter, you mix in order to get the right colours. When you have drawn enough pictures walk a few steps and boom there you have your plate (or tubes) and all you have to do is to pick the right one. That's actually my secret when it comes to learning songs that quickly. There are still moments where I get tricked by my muscle memory especially when it comes to new rythms. (By the way did you heared of polyrythms and polymeter. As a beatboxer I get a similar effect marking the sounds in groupsections as well as alternating between sounds. So it sounds like polyrythm but it's not really. How ever I onced tried it and i failed. Look it up. They are just at least two rythms layered on top.) By the way the song is called "take no prisoners" so check it out! (I have nothing to do with that song. I just liked how the endcard sounds like so I just mentioned the name to give as kinda give credits to a masterpiece.)

I told a guy once that I believe everyone can sing. I still believe that. However, he didn't agree with me. I believe some people have better voices than others. But God created us to worship my song.

Interesting video when voice strengthens during training vocal agility improves opening up possibilities to sing in different styles as well as the artistic ability. It’s great to be able to do rock and back off sing in a different style. Gabi told she can’t sing how wrong that vocal coach was 😮

Ken, I fully agree with you, and Gabriella ... but I also agree with something a DJ said ... As a singer, and a band can take a cover tune, and make it theirs! that saying, do something purposely different than the original band & singer did ... Tactful changes

I've heard some bad singers over the years, but I could always hear the potential in their voice and I'm not a vocal coach. The vocal coach that told Gabriela she could not sing was informing her that he was either too talentless, or too lazy to teach her.
