Thanks Ken. I'm a proponent of the "ah" sound. It gives the voice a clear, metallic sound which I like.

Hey Ken! Really good points here. When you said you didn't want to train closed vowels, would you still be able to take this exercise on an open O vowel? What if you have been training a cover and want to re-open the sound?

Oh, THAT’s what you meant when you were talking about “ping” in a different video I watched yesterday. Cool. Good stuff.
@joeritchie4554 Жыл бұрын
That was interesting. I remember my choir teacher in 6th grade had us work on the posture and breathing that you covered. To overcome the loss of strength when sitting, I use a bar stool. I especially do that when accompanying myself on piano.

Out of curiosity, have you ever watched Maynard James Keenan of Tool sing something like Sober? It’s amazing how he can sing like he did with posture that is literally all over the place. He’s doing it for the performance and drama but it’s remarkable. I’m not bringing this up to disagree with you to be clear, at all, I just think it’s interesting. 🤙🏻

Ken. Can you please at some point do a reaction/vocal analysis of Adam gontier from the band three days grace? One of the most iconic, modern hard rock singers since the 2000s and I'm dying to hear a pro breakdown his pipes and know what's going on. "Animal I have become" is a great tune, that show cases his style overall.

With regards to tip number 3, my daughter recently sang Panis Angelicus in a music festival. She had an opera singer for an adjudicator and she commented for her to explore increased palatal space. Does that match up with tip 3?
@kentamplin Жыл бұрын
That is precisely open throat technique; increasing the soft palate, as it rises, creates more space or residence or volume.

Just question about youre tongue position, thé back of youre tongue is down for open throat, but the sides of youre tongue are upwards, and the tip? Isnt that creating tension ? Do thé sides need to be up? And are you adding the twang here to create the « Ping » ? Thanks for youre explication 🙏☺️

Excellent, as always. How might strapping on a guitar and singing impact all of this? Many of the great singers did not have a guitar strapped on their back. Might the strapped on guitar, in some ways, impede better singing? If so, what should one do? THANKS! peace

The only guitar that effects my breathing is a Dreadnought size acoustic, I have a Tokai Les Paul one of the heaviest guitars known to man, doesn't affect at all, guess it depends on the individual of course.

Can I ask an ignorant question? I’ve always wondered….. why is it I can hit most any note/a broader range with my mouth closed/humming better and more succinctly than I ever could open mouthed? How is that a thing? Any response appreciated ❤

PS. I used to sing a lot and the more I sang, the better I was. I was actually really good at one point, the whole room would stop (for a good reason). Not the case now, I’m admittedly out of practice…

Strange question maybe- my diaphragm doesn’t really want to expand and it always kind of shoots pain up into my neck when I try to engage it like you did here. I’ve tried to fix it for years but It’s like my body just doesn’t want to breath like that. What the heck can I do to build it up? Or is something wrong with me? Lol

Hi Ken About POSTURE. I have a question. I was born with Scoliosis. For those that don't know what that is,I was born with a CURVED SPINE. So to the OUTSIDE WORLD it looks like I am leaning. To me,I am standing straight. Do you have any advice on those of us with this affliction?
@kentamplin2 ай бұрын
You just work with the body you have and do the best you can. Many sing well without classical good posture. But they have to work a little harder to get the same results.

I'm quite tall and skinny so stretching my belly so far out like in the video creates too much tension and leads to me using muscles around the kidneys and upper back instead lol...idk if i should train for more strenght in my diaphragm or i'm just built different

So, I can sing and breathe nice deep breaths from my diaphragm. This was confirmed by a vocal coach. But how do u use it as a gas pedal for every sound? Once I take that deep breath, I’m kind of ‘locked into’ it until I use up all that air
