Is it good to carry a knife as your key weapon for self defence? Short Answer, NO!

Knives are the single most carried weapon for self defense globally. But should one carry a knife solely for the purpose of self defense? My opinion is a big fat NO! Watch to learn why.
Don't get me wrong. Knives are fantastic for self defense. However, it shouldn't be your first line weapon because of the following reasons:
1. There are better, non-lethal weapons that have a much easier learning curve. eg., Pepper Sprays
2. Knives can escalate a conflict when it really doesn't need to.
3. Most people carrying a knife aren't really prepared to slice or stab an attacker due to lack of practice.
4. Defending yourself with a knife when you can use pepper spray instead can land you in a lot of avoidable legal trouble.
5. Most countries have strick laws against the use of knives for self defense.
That being said, I ALWAYS carry a knife on me. However, I carry it more for utility than self defesne. I might use it for self defense as a final resort. However, I carry multiple other tools to help me get out of a sticky situation without having to shed blood.

After watching the video and reading the comments It still comes down to this: 1. Get training on “real” self defense and situations. 2. Practice what you train for. 3. Knife, gun, pepper spray or whatever even bare hands- choose to master the basics until second nature. The average citizen will never train to be proficient in every aspect but by routinely practicing with what you are comfortable with you will have an edge. Morality is the last hurtle. If you are not willing to use your weapons; knife, pepper spray or even hands and feet in a real life situation then you will be having a bad day. You have to accept the fact and realize you are going to hurt another human being or worse if not, you will lose. Hopefully training with as much realistic situations will help overcome that.

I live in northern USA, Wisconsin, where I live is quite rural within small towns surrounding. Most men carry a knife here weather it be a fixed blade or folder. They are primarily used as everyday tools but it is also understood from a young age that even a small knife can be very useful in a combat/defensive role. The knife is also considered the less lethal weapon around here and in most parts of the 🇺🇸 because we also carry guns lol

To add onto that, open carrying a Bowie knife or other fixed bladed knife is a good deterrent. Through my own experience, people are much less likely to mess with you or harass you if you have one on your person because getting into a physical altercation with someone armed with a Bowie knife is one of the last things you'd want to do.

Since so many of you aren’t watching the whole video and hurrying to prove me wrong (not that I care), please read… I didn’t say don’t use a knife to defend yourself. I said a knife shouldn’t be your first line of defense because of the complications that surround it. I carry a knife everyday, everywhere, but I would rather pepper spray someone than stab them in self defense. But if the hot sauce doesn’t stop them, I’ll definitely use the knife. THE POINT IS USE A KNIFE GUYS, but have non lethal options on you as well. I literally said that in the video. 🙄 Thanks for watching though and please subscribe 😊

Personally I always have a knife with me. 99.999% of the time it's been a tool , food prep, opening boxes and whatnot. I carry a olight warrior 3s for first line defense. Hard to attack someone they can't see. Plus it's really handy to use like a striking tool if force was needed. I would use a blade for defence if the situation required it and it was my last option. After all, you don't really ever win a knife fight... I also don't put myself in dangerous places where that might happen.

Nothing wrong with a knife for defense, however it's not the most ideal tool and I also agree it shouldn't be your first line of defense. *If that's all you have, use it by all means.* But it _IS_ a good idea to carry escalating options of force, especially if you live in a bad area or otherwise might reasonably have any heightened risk of an altercation. For example when I did a lot of shiftwork I'd often walk my dog at 4am. I carried OC with me, on top of the pistol and knife that I basically always EDC anyway. There's OC sprays small enough to fit on a keychain, and there's many situations that don't call for lethal force (gun/knife) but rise above say a simple verbal altercation or threats. Of those 3 tools the knife is the _last_ one I would use, not because it's not an effective weapon but because if I have to use lethal force then a gun is unquestionably the better option in 90% of self defense scenarios. That being said, I know from years of hands-on training that a knife can easily "beat" a gun at close quarters in the hands of a determined attacker: Look up the "21 foot rule". Fortunately most of the assailants you're likely to encounter in the average American city are gangsta thugs who are both untrained and just looking for an easy score. I've had to pull my CCW twice, and never had to fire it thank God. Both times my brandishing the gun caused the assailant to flee -- same as the one time I had to pull a knife in defense. Just be sure lethal force is justified in your area before you pull a lethal weapon of any sort, because brandishing a knife or gun is in itself usually illegal if it's ruled that lethal force wouldn't have been justified. Use your head. Just don't count on police to save you whatever you do. When seconds count they're minutes away.

"I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" - that untrained guy at the gun store in the 5.11 pants Sometimes your life IS in immediate danger, and all you have on you is your everyday utility tool (pocket knife). In these situations, although evading, distracting and escaping should come first, law enforcement never arrives in time to save you. When seconds matter, the police are minutes away, so don't be too hesitant to defend yourself when it really matters.

I carry a knife because it's one of the best tools to have with you. In a self defense situation its best to run, get away or just avoid the whole situation if possible. If its truly unavoidable, don't use self defense as an excuse to absolutely kill them... Also always keep any weapons that you are carrying a complete secret (definitely know the concealed weapons laws in your state or country if you are carrying anything concealed) for example having an open carry pistol on your person makes you the top/first target in a shooting. Aways use deception and the element of surprise to execute a successful ambush. Use anything and everything around you to your advantage. A belt with a big belt buckle will give you more reach than someone's 3inch pocket knife. A marine veteran from the Vietnam War once told me his good friend from Texas always carried massive rectangular belt buckles, and he would always hone one or more edges in case he would ever need to defend himself! Stay calm and try not to panic or get angry as it's shown to lower your IQ. My friends and I practice self defense with eachother using all kinds of blade lengths. Benchmade even sells non sharp trainer blades to practice just opening their knives! I think they offer them in all their models even! For me in the end its always going to be a last ditch effort, if my guns fail ;)...say like your being choked out and about too lose consciousness... hes then going to receive a nice going away present on his arm.

And was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Here in Miami where gun and knife laws are well welcomed. So they asked him did he hit you no ,did he have a weapon no. Ok put your hands behind your back. Even tho he came with in punch range first. And say you get punched dazed and he turns he's back and you stab guess what????.... You go to jail cuz he no longer was a threat. Very stupid laws but I carry both lethal and none and train my brain to go for none lethal first.

Well in that case carrying a knife for self defense isn't a bad idea at all and creates a weak argument. Every single individual has a right to defend themselves lethal or not. Cause If your life is being threatened, by any means you should know that it all comes down on how fast you can use it, how effective you can use it, and how prepared you are to use it. We should more or less focus not to use it all the time same as how you would with a gun. Lethal or not lethal, Defense is defense every single person must have the right to defend it. So if a person comes up to me with intention of ending my existence I will do my best to defend myself and if he ends up at the wrong side of the road. Well, lets say he brought that to himself.

I agree with you. My point in creating this video was don’t carry a knife as your primary self defense weapon. You can always use the stopping power of less or non lethal weapons like a pepper spray before engaging your sharp tool. The same with a gun. You’ll see a multitude of videos where the use of a gun was lawful but not wise. When dealing with human life you’re dealing with the law as well. You can put an end to a fight by pepper spraying someone or stabbing them. Both will save your life, but the latter will put you into so much legal shit especially in countries like Brazil, India, Canada, where many times victims are put in prison for defending themselves.

A very informative video, filled with good facts. I believe that muscle memory plays a huge part when it comes to self defence, if someone carries a self defence tool be it pepper spray, knife, gun, batton etc. One should learn how to efficiently use the tool and should definately practice drawing it, a slow or a hesitant draw in a bad situation is the worst thing that a person can do. About knife being a self defence tool, it's one of the best when it comes to close combat, a knife should always be used for slashing and not stabbing if self defence is the priority. I personally carry a karambit holstered around my shin and a foldable 3" blade in my pocket. And yes any self defence tool should only be used if the situation arrives and should be used responsibly only to injure the person enough to evade the situation.

You have some good points and perhaps for your context or for your audience this is overall good advice. That said there is much I disagree with here. Your concept of the police or advanced justice systems protecting us is not something I can say much about without being impolite. And you seem to think using lethal force in self defense is a worse moral outcome that being victimized. Finally in the US and a few other “developed” countries people absolutely can legally carry lethal weapons for the express purpose of self defense. It’s the reasonableness of our actual actions that gets judged. The legal and moral mindset you are expressing is one that removes the option from people on the presumption that we are incapable of exercising it responsibility. Of course that mindset mean the only people carrying lethal tools are the very people we should least want to be empowered. Instead good people should all be encouraged by society to legally and respond carry both lethal and non-lethal self defense tools and to understand that it is our responsibility to protect ourselves and each other.

The first line of defense should be knowing how to strike and grapple. If you pulled a knife on someone who was more determined than you, stronger and better at fighting, they could take your knife and kill you with it. I think knife defense is a good option if you've spent a considerable amount of time training specifically how to use one in combat and you can honestly say that you'd rather use your hands in a fight than your knife.

Bro a man who is 5’5 that weight 135 pounds and doesn’t even train any martial arts that carries a knife for self defense and isn’t scared to use it could take on someone much bigger. Trust me, you have no idea how deadly a knife is. All it takes is a good stab that hits an artery & its game over. A bigger guy is easier target. Why you think many pro fighters were murdered by random people. Trust me I have watched to many gore videos and have seen many videos on self defense protection on KZbin. The odds of a person unarmed winning a knife fight is very little. You will get cut no matter what. A person would be stupid to even try to fight back with a knife guy. A knife should let alone scare the enemy.

The entire point of any weapon is to bridge the gap between your capabilities and whoever might be attacking you. It is of course better to be well trained but regardless of training, anyone having a knife swinging at them is going to think about it. And if they do take your knife to use against you than it's likely that they were going to kill you anyway. Might as well hope to get lucky. Plus there are styles of knives that are less lethal and easier to retain like smaller punch knives. Palm it and just jab at anything coming towards you till they stop trying. Allows for striking and grappling.

Good video. As someone who lives in a place where absolutely no item can be carried specifically for self defense (Canada), knives are a very tricky topic. Technically, in Ontario, we can carry a knife, provided it is intended as a tool only and doesn't cause undue anxiety or fear in the public (even that is tricky). Generally speaking, even if I carry a PENCIL, and the *purpose* of that pencil is solely to injure other humans.... that's technically a problem. However, I still carry a knife precisely as a tool as my EDC. I'm not thinking though that that knife is going to be my immediate go-to solution for an aggressor. My flashlight is actually my first go to as a strobe light is incredibly disorienting and it doubles as a blunt force multiplier. In a violent altercation, my first instinct is of course to run. The only exception to this is if I'm with my family, where they cannot flee at the same speed. And obviously I will not abandon my family. If I need to deploy a lethal tool to keep the attention of an aggressor on me, then that's what has to be done.

at the beginning of the video, I had the knee-jerk reaction to want to disagree with you, and leave my comments. Especially, being a totally blind martial arts instructor who teaches a lot of knife-based self-defense. But after watching the entire video, which I'm glad I did, I came to the realization that most of the points you made are the same as the points I make to my students. Carrying a knife for the specific purpose of self-defense is really silly, especially when most of us will never have to resort to that if we are smart and careful. Even as a blind person, traveling and working independently, sometimes very late at night, I carry a knife on me for 30 years, and I've never had to actually use it in the self-defense situation. with that said, there are a couple of points I will comment on. Number one, I disagree with the sentiment of worrying about court procedures after you use your knife in self-defense. Because for me, if the situation is so bad that I feel I need to employ or deploy my knife to save my life, then I shouldn't be worry about court or anything after that. as someone else already mentioned, best to be alive and in court than to be dead and buried. Number two, it is easy to say that people should carry pepper spray, or stungun, but here in Canada, carrying anything for self-defense is pretty much illegal. This means, you carry a pepper spray or stungun, you'll break the law, but if you carry a machete or a knife, you can actually tell them you do it for work or utility purposes.

I love pepper gel and I carry it as my main self defense tool, however it is not fool proof. Someone who is drugged up might not feel it, and a hardened criminal might be able to fight through it or even block it. If my my pepper gel fails then I want something else to fall back on because this small skinny body of mine will never stop a big strong attacker. Knives are hard to use so instead I think a gun is best. It has range and you can shoot warning shots or show the criminal that you have it and they will often run away without you having to shoot them. That said if it comes down to it I would rather shoot someone and go to court then let them kill me.

NYC has some crazy crime. The subways are especially scary. Pulling out a knife out in conflict might not always dissuade the criminal, esp if he’s high or drunk or on some other drug. And shit hits the fan if there are 3 to 4 guys that surround you. A knife turns against you in such a situation. A good lot pepper spray would do good in such a case. A knife would do good with an unarmed individual. Thanks for your comment. Makes a lot of sense. 👍

Knives has no techniques to harm or kill. All it takes is to stab or slash them any where in the body. The guy will literally end up panicking as soon as he bleeds. Fights over. That is what makes a knife very dangerous. Now of course it takes courage and will to have that mindset to do that to someone. Not everyone has that but if your life is in danger. Maybe your mindset would be in survival mood and you can end up winning with that knife.

@@cripbk2147 sigh You have grossly underestimated the amount of skill needed to kill someone with a knife and overestimated the effect that it has on someone. it is not as simple as walking up to them and striking them - if you don't understand this then it means you have never been in a fight in your life and have no idea how difficult and complex even hitting someone is for most people. Go into a boxing gym and try sparring with skilled individuals, even if they keep the pace down and barely touch you you wont be able to hit them at all. It would only get worse in more intense situations. people don't panic as soon as they "bleed" simply stabbing someone is not going to make them stop instantly, many stabbing victims don't even notice that they have been stabbed. If I had a knife and I was in a position where my life was in danger from someone is has even a minimal history of violence it would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to defend myself from that person using nothing more than said knife. That person could just walk right up to me, make me drop the knife and use it against me and there would be absolutely NOTHING I could do about it.
